Choose The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim if you want to roam a large fantasy world, shape a character around your preferred weapons, spells, and abilities, and play at a self-directed pace. If a particular traditional RPG appeals to you, compare its actual exploration, combat, story, and character systems with those preferences; the genre label alone cannot tell you which game will suit you.

Start with what you want to do during play

“Traditional RPG” can describe very different games, so there is no single opposing style to compare with Skyrim. Bethesda presents Skyrim as an open-world game centered on exploration and freedom to choose how to play. Its official Skyrim page describes a world to explore and character approaches built from weapons, spells, and abilities.

Use the following questions to compare Skyrim with the specific RPG you are considering. These are practical decision criteria, not a formal definition of either genre.

  • Exploration: Do you want to roam and discover places at your own pace, or would you rather follow a more directed route?
  • Combat: Does the game’s actual combat loop appeal to you? Skyrim is action-oriented; compare that with the alternative’s controls and encounter rhythm rather than assuming all RPG combat works alike.
  • Story: Do you want an authored main quest to guide you, or more room to decide what to do next? Skyrim has a story as well as open-ended play; those priorities do not have to be mutually exclusive.
  • Character freedom: Would you like to define your approach through different weapons, spells, and abilities? Check how the other game handles builds and whether it supports the ways you want to play.
  • Pace and structure: Consider whether you prefer choosing your own route and activities or progressing through a more structured sequence of quests or areas.

What makes Skyrim a particular kind of choice

Exploration and self-directed play

Bethesda describes Skyrim as a world open to exploration. In its retrospective on the series, the studio also emphasizes travel freedom and a world whose details can be discovered, while describing Skyrim as balancing story with open-ended freedom. That points to a game where you can pursue quests but also choose how to spend time in the world; it does not mean the game has no authored narrative. See Bethesda’s series retrospective for its account of those design priorities.

Action combat and build choices

The Elder Scrolls’ history includes real-time, action-oriented combat. Whether that is a plus depends on what you enjoy: compare the moment-to-moment combat in Skyrim with the specific alternative, including how each game lets you change your approach. Bethesda’s product information describes choices among weapons, spells, and abilities, giving players room to imagine different character types.

Story alongside freedom

A preference for a strong story does not automatically rule Skyrim out. Bethesda describes it as combining a story with open-ended play. The useful question is how much direction you want between story beats, and whether you enjoy setting your own goals when the game leaves the next step up to you.

Compare it with the actual RPG on your shortlist

Before deciding, look at the other game’s description, gameplay footage, or manual for its real systems. Fill in this quick comparison from reliable information about both games:

What to compare Skyrim Your other RPG
Exploration and travel Open-world exploration and freedom to roam are central to Bethesda’s description. Check whether travel is free-roaming, route-based, zone-based, or otherwise structured.
Combat Action-oriented, real-time combat is part of the series’ design history. Check the actual combat loop; do not infer it from the RPG label.
Story structure A story sits alongside open-ended player freedom. Check how strongly the game directs the player through its narrative and quests.
Character approach Players can choose among weapons, spells, and abilities. Check how builds or character choices affect available play styles.
Route and pace The world is presented as open to exploration. Check how much choice the game gives over activity order, travel, and progression.

Give the most weight to the rows that matter to you. Someone who values free exploration and real-time action may favor Skyrim; someone drawn to a particular RPG’s story structure or combat may prefer that game. Neither preference makes one style universally better.

Choose the right Skyrim edition if you want to try it

Skyrim Anniversary Edition is a current, identifiable way to buy the game, but check your platform and the edition listing before purchasing. Bethesda describes Anniversary Edition as including the core game, official add-ons, and Creation Club content. Its purchase information says the digital upgrade is for owners of Skyrim Special Edition and requires that base game. An upgrade is therefore not a substitute for buying the base game if you do not already own it. Availability and purchase options can vary by platform.

Do not confuse Skyrim with The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online is another open-world RPG, but it is an online game with its own exploration, quests, leveling, and combat systems. ZeniMax Online Studios’ new-player guide, updated May 20, 2024, describes those online-specific systems. If you want a single-player Skyrim experience, ESO is not an equivalent substitute simply because it shares the setting and series name.
