There is no universal winner among Siemens, Schneider Electric, and ABB. The right platform is the one that fits your machine or process, installed skills, safety and motion requirements, connectivity, lifecycle plan, and regional support. Siemens is often the most coherent choice when a project benefits from a single controller, HMI, drive, safety, and engineering-data workflow. ABB Automation Builder is compelling when CODESYS standards, multi-vendor integration, motion, simulation, and flexible licensing are priorities. Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure Automation Expert deserves a detailed technical and commercial evaluation, but the public source identified here does not support a neutral performance ranking.

Quick answer: choose by fit, not by brand reputation

Start with the constraints that can make a platform unsuitable. A packaging machine with coordinated servo axes and certified safety needs a different evaluation from a small conveyor cell. A brownfield plant with thousands of existing tags and technicians trained on one vendor faces a different risk profile from a greenfield site that can standardize from scratch.

Choose this as your leading shortlist when… Why it may fit What to verify before committing
Siemens TIA/SIMATIC You want one integrated environment spanning PLC, HMI, drives, safety, and engineering data, or your site already has strong Siemens skills and libraries. Exact CPU and I/O capacity, required redundancy, safety and motion functions, software-seat and runtime terms, hardware lifecycle, and local service coverage.
ABB Automation Builder You value a CODESYS-based environment, IEC 61131-3 compliance, multi-vendor device integration, motion and drives, simulation, and tiered licensing that includes a free Basic level. Device and fieldbus support for your design, license scope for connectivity and engineering features, local integrator depth, and long-term spare-parts and service arrangements.
Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Automation Expert Your team is evaluating Schneider’s digitized automation approach and can obtain current technical, licensing, controller, motion, safety, and support documentation for the target region. Current product capabilities and versions, supported controllers, integration boundaries, licensing and runtime costs, migration tools, and evidence from a representative proof of concept.

The available primary material does not provide a neutral cross-vendor benchmark for price, return on investment, market share, cycle time, or commissioning duration. Treat every “best” claim as a project-specific hypothesis to test.

What each platform actually covers

Siemens TIA Portal and SIMATIC

Siemens presents SIMATIC Automation as a scalable portfolio integrated with its Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) engineering tools. The portfolio includes PLCs, distributed I/O, control systems, and field-programming devices. Siemens describes the architecture as connecting automation components through a common engineering workflow and states that “TIA enhances efficiency by ensuring seamless data exchange, improving diagnostics and simplifying maintenance.”

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The controller range is intended to cover different scales: the compact S7-1200 G2 for basic automation, the S7-1500 family for sophisticated machine designs, redundant S7-1500 R/H CPUs for applications requiring higher availability, and the virtual S7-1500V. The presence of a family does not by itself prove that a particular CPU meets your scan-time, memory, communications, or redundancy target; select the exact catalog number and firmware combination.

If you are sourcing a Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 G2 PLC, verify the CPU variant, integrated and expansion I/O, supply-voltage requirements, firmware compatibility, seller reputation, warranty, and availability in your region. A part that appears equivalent in a catalogue may differ in communications, memory, safety capability, or delivery status.

ABB Automation Builder

ABB describes Automation Builder as “ABB’s unified automation platform for PLCs, safety, drives, motion, and control panels — providing one engineering environment for the entire automation project.” It is built on CODESYS and is fully compliant with IEC 61131-3, the programming-language standard used by many industrial-control engineers.

ABB documents programming, simulation, commissioning, remote diagnostics, version control, reusable libraries, multi-user engineering, secure communication, and role-based access. Those functions can reduce handoffs between disciplines, but you still need to confirm which are included for your selected devices and license level.

Automation Builder has three documented license levels. Basic is free of charge; Standard and Premium add functionality and engineering capability. “Free” does not mean that every controller, fieldbus, simulation, connectivity, or team-engineering feature is included, so map each required function to the license matrix before estimating project cost.

Define the application before opening a vendor demo

Describe the process and machine boundaries

  • List every controlled asset: motors, valves, robots, drives, instruments, safety devices, recipes, quality stations, and utility systems.
  • Separate a single machine, a line, and a plant-level system. A platform that is adequate for one cell may require additional controllers, servers, or integration layers at line scale.
  • Record required operating modes, batch or recipe behavior, alarm volume, historian retention, remote access, and planned expansion.
  • Identify validation obligations, change-control procedures, and cybersecurity policies that the engineering environment must support.

Size controllers and I/O from real counts

Create an I/O and communications schedule before comparing CPU families. Count digital and analog points, safety points, high-speed counters, technology objects, remote stations, drives, and third-party devices. Add growth capacity based on your site’s approved standard rather than an arbitrary percentage. Record required cycle time, jitter tolerance, memory, data-logging load, network topology, and behavior after a communications fault.

Separate safety, motion, and ordinary control

Mark which functions require a safety-rated controller or certified safety function, and which are ordinary sequencing. For motion, document axis count, interpolation, gearing and camming, synchronization, homing, servo feedback, and recovery after a fault. If robotics or coordinated multi-axis work is involved, define the required robot and drive interfaces before selecting a general-purpose PLC.

Make connectivity concrete

List the fieldbuses and industrial Ethernet protocols already present, plus the interfaces needed for instruments, drives, robots, vision systems, MES, SCADA, historians, and cloud or edge systems. Specify whether the connection must be a native engineering object, a gateway, an OPC UA server or client, an MQTT path, or a custom driver. “Supports Ethernet” is not a sufficient requirement.

Document people, geography, and installed base

Record the vendors your maintenance technicians, integrators, panel builders, and controls engineers can troubleshoot without external help. Map spare parts, approved suppliers, training availability, and response times in every country where the equipment will operate. An apparently cheaper platform can become expensive if every fault requires a scarce specialist.

Compare the engineering workflow

Evaluation question Evidence to request from each vendor or integrator Why it changes the decision
One project for PLC, HMI, drives, safety, and diagnostics? A completed sample project using your intended controller, HMI, drive, and safety devices. Fewer data handoffs can simplify commissioning, but only if the exact devices and versions are covered.
How are reusable standards maintained? Library versioning, protected blocks, naming rules, templates, and change-review workflow. Standardized libraries reduce engineering variation and make future technicians faster.
Can multiple engineers work safely? Demonstration of version control, multi-user editing, access roles, merge or checkout behavior, and audit history. Team workflow becomes a delivery and compliance risk on large projects.
How are simulation and commissioning handled? A test plan showing offline simulation, hardware-in-the-loop or emulation options, download procedures, and rollback. Earlier testing can reduce site time, but only if simulated behavior matches deployed hardware.
What happens when a device or firmware changes? Compatibility matrix, upgrade notes, project migration procedure, and a rollback example. Version surprises are a common source of commissioning delays.

Use the same scripted exercise for every candidate: create a small sequence, add an analog loop, configure a drive, implement a safety interlock, expose a diagnostic, change a library block, and restore the project from version control. Score the elapsed engineering effort and the number of manual handoffs instead of relying on presentation quality.

Controller, I/O, redundancy, and availability

Ask each supplier to map your required architecture to specific orderable hardware. The response should identify CPU performance class, memory, supported I/O families, network ports, expansion limits, time synchronization, and firmware requirements. For process or high-availability systems, document what happens on CPU, network, power-supply, and I/O failure, including the transition time and operator indication.

Siemens explicitly lists compact S7-1200 G2 controllers, higher-end S7-1500 CPUs, redundant S7-1500 R/H CPUs, and virtual S7-1500V as parts of its scalable SIMATIC portfolio. That breadth can simplify a standard spanning small machines and more demanding systems, but the engineering and maintenance implications of mixing families still need a site standard.

For ABB and Schneider, require equivalent hardware maps for your actual I/O density, redundancy, and communications needs. Do not infer parity from a product-family name or from a demonstration using a different controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HMI, SCADA, drives, and data integration

Evaluate the complete operator and service path, not just the PLC editor. Build a screen that includes alarm shelving, trends, recipe editing, user roles, maintenance counters, and a device diagnostic. Then trace one tag from the field device through the controller and HMI to the historian or MES interface. Record where data types, timestamps, scaling, quality states, and alarm acknowledgements are transformed.

For drives, test parameter transfer, startup identification, fault text, reset behavior, safe torque or equivalent safety functions, and replacement of a failed drive. Confirm whether drive objects are configured in the same project, require separate software, or depend on a gateway. For SCADA and MES, test certificate handling, namespace stability, buffering during network loss, and recovery after a server restart.

Siemens positions TIA/SIMATIC as an integrated controller, HMI, drive, safety, and engineering-data architecture. ABB positions Automation Builder as one environment for PLCs, safety, drives, motion, and control panels. These are architectural claims; validate the actual engineering path with the devices and versions you will purchase.

Safety, motion, and robotics decision points

Safety

  • List the required safety functions and performance levels, then identify the certified hardware and function blocks that implement each one.
  • Check separation between standard and safety code, password and role controls, change history, and proof-test documentation.
  • Test a safety fault, reset, restart inhibit, and diagnostic message with the machine in a realistic state.

Motion

  • Specify the number and type of axes, interpolation groups, synchronization requirements, feedback devices, and maximum update rates.
  • Demonstrate commissioning of a servo, including motor data, tuning, homing, limit handling, and recovery after an encoder or network fault.
  • Measure whether the engineering workflow keeps motion parameters, PLC logic, HMI status, and drive diagnostics consistent.

Robotics and coordinated cells

Require a documented interface to the robot controller, including program selection, handshakes, safety zones, fault recovery, and production traceability. If the platform relies on a separate robot engineering tool, include that tool’s licenses, backups, and skills in the total design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standards, openness, and vendor dependence

IEC 61131-3 compliance can make programming concepts familiar across suppliers, but it does not guarantee that projects, libraries, motion objects, safety code, or diagnostics move directly between platforms. ABB states that Automation Builder is built on CODESYS and fully compliant with IEC 61131-3. Ask what can be exported in a usable form and what must be rewritten.

For every proprietary component, record an exit plan: source-code ownership, library source, tag export, HMI screen portability, drive parameter backups, network documentation, and the skills needed to maintain the system without the original integrator. Open protocols reduce interface friction, but they do not remove the cost of testing, cybersecurity hardening, and lifecycle support.

Diagnostics, cybersecurity, and lifecycle support

Use a fault-injection test to compare diagnostic quality. Disconnect a remote I/O station, interrupt a drive network, corrupt an input signal, and reboot an operator station. Score whether the system identifies the failed component, preserves useful context, timestamps the event, and guides a technician to recovery.

Request each vendor’s security update process, supported operating systems, account and role model, backup guidance, remote-access controls, and end-of-support policy. ABB documents secure communication and role-based access in Automation Builder. Siemens emphasizes diagnostics and simplified maintenance in its TIA description. These statements do not replace a site-specific threat model or a lifecycle commitment for your exact release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan the full service life: spare CPU and I/O availability, firmware archives, engineering workstation images, license recovery, training for new technicians, preventive replacement, and migration from legacy hardware. A platform with a clear migration path can be safer than a technically newer platform that your team cannot support.

Licensing and total cost of ownership

Cost category Questions to include in the bid
Engineering seats How many named or concurrent users are needed, and are service, simulation, safety, motion, or HMI tools separate products?
Runtime and deployment Are controller, HMI, SCADA, historian, or edge runtimes licensed separately? Are fees perpetual, subscription, or support-linked?
Hardware What are the prices and lead times for CPUs, I/O, networks, safety modules, drives, panels, and spare units in the operating region?
Training and support What courses, certification, hotline, onsite response, and integrator services are required for safe operation?
Migration and upgrades What is the cost to convert projects, validate firmware changes, replace obsolete hardware, and retest safety functions?
Downtime exposure What is the financial impact of a delayed commissioning, unavailable spare, or unsupported legacy component?

ABB documents Basic, Standard, and Premium Automation Builder licenses, with Basic free of charge. Confirm the current feature boundaries before treating that as a project budget. The cited material does not establish comparable Siemens or Schneider prices, nor does it provide a neutral cross-vendor total-cost figure.

Migration and brownfield risk

In an existing plant, migration effort usually dominates the software purchase. Inventory every controller, I/O rack, network, drive, HMI screen, alarm, recipe, safety function, and undocumented workaround. Classify each item as reusable, convertible, or rewrite-only. Include obsolete parts and unavailable source files in the risk register.

  1. Freeze and back up the running system, including controller images, HMI projects, drive parameters, safety signatures, and network configurations.
  2. Build a tag and alarm cross-reference with engineering units, scaling, quality states, and operator text.
  3. Recreate one representative cell on a test bench before committing to a line-wide conversion.
  4. Run functional, safety, performance, and recovery tests against the old system’s approved behavior.
  5. Plan a staged cutover with rollback hardware, spare parts, trained staff, and a defined production window.

A greenfield project avoids conversion work but still inherits the chosen platform’s future skills and spare-parts obligations. Make the same lifecycle assessment for both cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical selection process

  1. Write the requirements. Freeze I/O counts, axis counts, safety functions, protocols, availability targets, validation needs, and expansion assumptions.
  2. Shortlist on hard constraints. Remove any platform that cannot support a required controller, safety function, motion profile, protocol, environmental rating, or regional service model.
  3. Map exact products. Obtain orderable CPU, I/O, drive, HMI, safety, and software part numbers with firmware compatibility.
  4. Run the same engineering exercise. Use a small but representative sequence, alarm model, drive, safety interlock, diagnostic, and version-control workflow.
  5. Test failure and recovery. Inject network, I/O, drive, power, and operator-station faults; record diagnosis time and recovery steps.
  6. Price the lifecycle. Include engineering seats, runtimes, hardware, spares, training, support, validation, migration, and expected upgrades.
  7. Score people and geography. Weight local technicians, integrators, distributors, response times, and installed-base compatibility.
  8. Approve a standard with exceptions. Define the default platform, permitted alternatives, required documentation, and who can authorize deviations.

Which platform fits common project situations?

New machine with a single-vendor controls strategy

Put Siemens first on the shortlist when the machine benefits from a unified TIA/SIMATIC workflow and your team already maintains Siemens standards. Validate the exact S7-1200 G2 or S7-1500 configuration, HMI, drives, safety, and service terms rather than selecting by brand alone.

Machine or line needing CODESYS familiarity and flexible licensing

Put ABB Automation Builder first when your engineers already use CODESYS concepts, need the documented IEC 61131-3 environment, or value one project spanning PLC, safety, drives, motion, and control panels. Confirm device coverage and whether Standard or Premium licensing is required.

Plant evaluating a Schneider digital-automation architecture

Include EcoStruxure Automation Expert in a controlled proof of concept and obtain current technical and commercial documentation. The 29 February 2024 version 5.0 white paper is a reference point, not a substitute for testing your controllers, motion, safety, data paths, and support model.

Brownfield expansion

Favor the platform that matches the installed base when reuse, technician familiarity, and spare-parts continuity outweigh the theoretical benefits of changing vendors. If a change is unavoidable, budget for conversion, parallel testing, retraining, and rollback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common selection mistakes and their fixes

  • Choosing from a brochure. Fix: require a hands-on, identical proof of concept with your devices and fault cases.
  • Comparing CPU names instead of architectures. Fix: compare complete controller, I/O, network, safety, motion, HMI, and redundancy bills of material.
  • Treating a free engineering tier as a free project. Fix: map every required connectivity and engineering feature to the license level and runtime terms.
  • Ignoring local skills. Fix: score technician availability, integrator capacity, training lead time, and emergency support by site.
  • Assuming standards guarantee portability. Fix: test export, library reuse, diagnostics, safety validation, and HMI migration with real projects.
  • Leaving lifecycle work until commissioning. Fix: require firmware policy, backups, spare strategy, upgrade path, and end-of-support dates in the design review.
  • Using unsupported performance claims. Fix: treat vendor-published capabilities as requirements to verify, not as neutral benchmark results.

Final decision framework

Choose Siemens when integrated TIA/SIMATIC engineering, a broad SIMATIC controller portfolio, and existing Siemens capability reduce delivery risk. Choose ABB when Automation Builder’s CODESYS foundation, IEC 61131-3 compliance, multi-vendor orientation, motion and drive coverage, and tiered licensing match the team and device mix. Choose Schneider when a current EcoStruxure Automation Expert evaluation demonstrates that its controllers, engineering workflow, safety and motion integrations, connectivity, licensing, and regional support meet your requirements.

Document the decision with the requirements, tested project, failure results, lifecycle cost, staffing assumptions, and migration plan. That record is more defensible than a generic claim that one vendor is “best,” and it gives the plant a repeatable standard for future machines.
