Choose PlayStation Plus if you will use its benefits and play several games included in its catalog while they are available. Buy games individually if you have a short, specific list and want access that is not tied to a title remaining in a subscription catalog. Compare prices for the games you actually plan to play over the same period—and factor in online multiplayer, which requires Plus for most paid PS4 and PS5 games.
What you get with each option
PlayStation Plus has three tiers in the US: Essential, Extra, and Premium. All include online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage, and Share Play. Extra adds the Game Catalog; Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming where available. Sony’s support comparison describes the benefits at PlayStation Plus support.
Buying a game individually means purchasing it through the PlayStation Store rather than accessing it through a subscription catalog. Sony says purchased games appear in the account’s Game Library. Understand what happens to access
Monthly games require an active membership
Essential, Extra, and Premium members can add the monthly games to their library. Sony says they can download and play them while their membership is active; if the membership lapses, active access to these subscription games ends until they resubscribe. Catalog games can leave the service
Extra and Premium catalog access is not a permanent purchase. Sony publishes removal dates for some titles, so check both the current catalog and any listed date before planning around a game. Premium’s Classics Catalog, trials, and streaming are also subscription benefits, with streaming subject to regional and technical availability. Purchased games are tied to your account
If a purchased title is missing, Sony advises checking that you are signed into the account that bought it and reviewing transaction history. This differs from a Plus catalog title, which requires an active subscription and continued catalog availability. See Sony’s support guidance.

Account for online multiplayer
Sony says most PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, though some do not; free-to-play games are an exception noted on Sony’s plan page. Check the Store listing or requirements for each game. In Sony’s words, “For the majority of games that you have purchased on disc or downloaded from PlayStation Store, you need a PlayStation Plus membership plan to play online.” See Sony’s US plan page.
If you already plan to keep Essential for online play, do not compare Extra’s full price with the price of buying games. Compare the upgrade cost instead. At the US annual prices Sony displayed on October 4, 2026, Extra costs $55 more than Essential ($134.99 minus $79.99). Premium costs $25 more than Extra ($159.99 minus $134.99). These are calculations from Sony’s listed prices, not separate Sony statistics.

Compare costs for the games you expect to play
- Make a 12-month game list. Include only titles you realistically expect to play. Check whether each is currently in the Extra or Premium catalog and whether Sony lists a removal date.
- Price the list in your local Store. Add current individual prices, including discounts only if they are actually available to you. If you assume a game will be bought on sale, state that assumption in your comparison.
- Choose the right subscription baseline. If you need Plus for multiplayer, compare the incremental cost of upgrading from Essential to Extra or Premium—not the entire higher-tier fee—to buying the same games individually.
- Value other benefits separately. Count monthly games, discounts, cloud storage, Share Play, classics, trials, or streaming only if you expect to use them.
- Recheck before paying. Store prices, discounts, catalog membership, and removal dates can change.
There is no universal game-count break-even: it depends on your game list, current regional prices, time spent playing, and whether you value the other benefits. A subscription can suit someone who wants to sample several titles within a limited period; buying can suit someone focused on a few favorites, repeat play, or access not dependent on catalog inclusion.

Which option fits your situation?
- Choose Essential if online multiplayer and the core benefits are what you want, but you do not need the Game Catalog.
- Choose Extra if you expect to play multiple current Game Catalog titles and the catalog access is worth the added cost over Essential or individual purchases.
- Choose Premium if you will also use the Classics Catalog, trials, or cloud streaming where available enough to justify its added cost over Extra.
- Buy individually if you already know which games you want and prefer not to rely on their continued presence in a subscription catalog.
