Gemini 4 Argon is the model to evaluate for demanding coding and professional knowledge-work tasks—but it is still rolling out in phases, so access is not guaranteed. Choose based on access and results on your own tasks, not benchmark scores or per-token prices alone.
Start with access: can you use Argon today?
Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, and describes access as a phased expansion. The announcement says it will broaden access before making Argon broadly available to developers, enterprises, and consumers. That is not the same as general availability: your region, account, and product channel may determine whether you can use it. Ask your Google administrator or check the product you intend to use rather than assuming the model is available.
Google documents Gemini 3.8 Flash as generally available. Its listed routes include the Gemini app, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Google AI Studio, Gemini API, Google AI Mode, and Google Antigravity. Availability through a particular product can still depend on that product’s access rules. Google announced Flash on September 2, 2026. What each model is positioned to do
Gemini 3.8 Flash: an available, configurable workhorse
Flash is suited to general work where its performance, integration, and cost fit the task. The Gemini API model ID is gemini-3.8-flash. Google documents a 1-million-token context window, a maximum output of 64,000 tokens, and thinking levels of low, medium, or high; medium is the default. It accepts text, images, audio, and video as input and produces text output. The API guide says lowering the thinking level can reduce token consumption for everyday work, though the best setting depends on the task. (Gemini API model guide)

- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Gemini 4 Argon: a phased option for heavier workflows
Google presents Argon for complex software engineering, enterprise legal and finance knowledge work, and cybersecurity defense. Its launch announcement states a 1-million-token context limit and introductory API rates. The public information described here does not establish an Argon API model ID, an output-token cap, or every distribution channel; do not assume Flash’s API settings or limits apply to Argon. (Google’s Argon announcement)
Compare the published prices—but calculate your workflow’s cost
The following are Google-stated API rates per million tokens, not a guarantee of what a particular product or deployment will charge. Flash’s introductory prices are time-limited; Argon’s announcement calls its prices introductory but does not state an end date in the cited information.

| Model and period | Input, per million tokens | Output, per million tokens | Cached input |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.8 Flash, through December 31, 2026 | $0.75 | $3.75 | Not stated in the cited pricing information |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash, starting January 1, 2027 | $1.50 | $7.50 | Not stated in the cited pricing information |
| Gemini 4 Argon, introductory rates announced September 30, 2026 | $2 | $10 | 95% discount from Argon’s input price |
These rates make Flash cheaper per token at the stated prices, but per-token price is not the same as cost per completed task. A difficult task may use more tokens, require retries, or need extra human review. Argon’s cached-input discount applies to cached input, not all input. Estimate cost from your actual input and output token counts, cache use, and retry rate, then verify current prices before committing. (Gemini API pricing; Google’s Argon announcement)
Use benchmarks as clues, not a universal winner
Google’s September 2026 Flash model card and its live Argon comparison report the following results. The figures are vendor-reported and come from pages that may differ in release date and evaluation setup. They are not a controlled, same-condition head-to-head test, and they cannot predict every team’s results.

| Benchmark | Gemini 3.8 Flash | Gemini 4 Argon |
|---|---|---|
| DeepSWE v1.1 | 73.7% (Google DeepMind, September 2026 model card) | 77.9% (Google DeepMind live comparison) |
| Vals Finance Agent v2 | 61.4% (Google DeepMind, September 2026 model card) | 65.4% (Google DeepMind live comparison) |
| Harvey’s Legal Agent Benchmark, all-pass rate | 10.0% (Google DeepMind, September 2026 model card) | 19.6% (Google DeepMind live comparison) |
Google’s Flash model card also reports 1,545 Elo on GDPVal-AA v2 (knowledge work), 89.4% on Terminal-bench 2.1, and 54.9% on HLE-Verified. Google’s Argon comparison reports 57.4% on Terminal-bench 4.0 and 68.0% on CWE-bench v1. These additional figures use different benchmark definitions or versions; comparing unlike benchmarks as if they were a direct contest would be misleading. Run a small evaluation on your real work
If both models are accessible, test them on the same representative tasks before switching a workflow. Include routine requests and difficult cases, and define what counts as a successful result before looking at outputs.
- Select representative tasks. Use real examples from the workflow, including edge cases and tasks where an error has a meaningful cost.
- Keep conditions consistent. Use the same prompts, context, tools, and success criteria for both models wherever their interfaces permit. Note any differences you cannot hold constant.
- Measure outcomes. Record correctness, completion rate, latency, tool behavior, retries, and input and output tokens. For consequential work, include human review time and the cost of correcting errors.
- Estimate full cost. Calculate per-run and monthly usage at current rates, accounting for cached versus uncached input where applicable and the introductory-rate dates.
- Choose by net value. Prefer the model that meets the quality and reliability bar at an acceptable total cost. A benchmark lead matters only if it translates into better results on the work you actually need done.
Account for limits and oversight
Google’s September 2026 Flash model card lists hallucinations, occasional slowness or timeouts, and a March 2026 knowledge cutoff among its limitations. The cutoff means Flash may not know later facts from its training alone; current information may require an appropriate retrieval source. Human review is prudent for legal, financial, security, or otherwise consequential outputs, regardless of benchmark performance. (Google DeepMind’s September 2026 Flash model card)
Cybersecurity access also needs careful qualification. Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber is distinct from standard Flash and is described as available to trusted defenders through Google’s Fairwind Program. Argon’s announcement discusses cyber defense and safeguards, but that does not establish general public access to a consumer cybersecurity product. Which model should you choose?
- Choose Gemini 3.8 Flash when you need a documented generally available option, value its published API controls, and its performance on your tasks is sufficient at the applicable rate.
- Consider Gemini 4 Argon when you can access it and your own evaluation shows that gains on demanding coding or professional knowledge work justify its higher announced introductory per-token rates and any integration or operating costs.
- Wait or evaluate later if Argon is not available to your account, or if neither model has been tested against the quality, latency, and oversight requirements of a high-stakes workflow.
