Choose a screenless tracker if you want low-distraction activity or sleep tracking and are happy to review results in a phone app. Choose a smartwatch if you want information, workout controls, notifications, and supported apps on your wrist. Neither category guarantees a particular GPS feature, battery life, or subscription model, so compare the exact devices against how you plan to use them.
Start with how you want to interact
A screenless tracker keeps most information off your wrist. You typically use its companion phone app to review measurements and manage settings; the details depend on the model. WHOOP describes its design this way: “A smartwatch – WHOOP intentionally does not have a watch face to distract you with notifications.” (WHOOP Support, “WHOOP Basics”.) A smartwatch is the more natural fit if you want to glance at information, control a workout, or handle supported notifications from your wrist.
Think about the moments when you will use the device. If you mainly want to collect activity or sleep data and check it later, a screenless design may suit you. If you expect to interact with the device during a run, at work, or throughout the day, a watch display and its controls may be more useful. “Screenless” describes an interaction style; it does not mean every tracker has the same sensors or features.
Do screenless fitness trackers have GPS?
Some screenless devices use a paired smartphone for location-based workout data instead of built-in GPS. In that case, you need to bring the phone for location-dependent tracking. If you want route, pace, or distance data without carrying a phone, check the specifications for the exact model and confirm it has built-in GPS. Do not assume that all screenless trackers lack GPS—or that every smartwatch includes it.

The screenless examples in the Tom’s Guide comparison of Oura, Whoop, and Fitbit Air and its 2026 comparison of Garmin Cirqa, Fitbit Air, WHOOP 5.0, and Oura Ring 5 rely on a paired smartphone for location-based exercise data. That describes those examples, not the whole category.
How often will I need to charge it?
Battery life depends on the specific device and how it is used. A screenless design can mean fewer charging sessions, but it is not a category-wide guarantee. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison reports these estimates for the named models:

These are model-specific figures reported by Tom’s Guide in 2026, not guaranteed results or a promise for other models. Check the manufacturer’s current estimate and its stated usage conditions before buying. For a smartwatch, weigh its display and extra features against its own model-specific battery estimate and charging routine.
Do I need to pay a monthly subscription?
Compare the full cost, not just the device price. Some trackers make a paid membership part of the service arrangement, while others offer different combinations of included app features and optional plans. Terms and available features can change, so check the current manufacturer plan for the model and region you intend to buy. Also establish what data and tools remain available if you do not subscribe or later cancel.

For a smartwatch, check whether the features you care about are included with the device and its companion phone ecosystem, or require a separate paid service. A 2026 comparison of screenless trackers highlights that subscription arrangements differ substantially across products; it does not establish one recurring price that applies to the category.

Check comfort, compatibility, and app usefulness
Form factor affects whether you will actually wear and use a device. Consider sleep, workouts, work clothes, and any other wristwear you use; a band, ring, or watch can feel very different in those settings. Comfort is personal, so try the device if you can.

Confirm that the device works with your phone and that its companion app presents information in a way you will use. A screenless tracker makes the app especially important because it is the main place to review data and manage settings. Before buying, look at the features available in your region and on your phone model; availability can vary and product lineups change. Apple’s Apple Watch comparison page is one place to check current Apple Watch models and features.

- Choose your preferred interaction. Pick a screenless tracker for app-first, low-prompt use; pick a smartwatch if you want on-wrist information and controls.
- Decide whether you need phone-free GPS. Check for built-in GPS on the exact model if you want to record routes without carrying your phone.
- Set a charging expectation. Compare the manufacturer’s estimate for the model with how often you are willing to charge it.
- Work out the ongoing cost. Verify the current price, membership requirements, and which features are available without a paid plan.
- Check daily fit. Confirm phone compatibility, app usefulness, and comfort for the activities and settings where you will wear it.
There is no universal winner. A screenless tracker favors less wrist interaction; a smartwatch favors access to information and features on the wrist. GPS, battery, comfort, and cost vary by model, so let your routine—not the category label—settle the decision.
