For a typical stereo nature-sounds stream sent to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS, set audio to AAC (or supported MP3), 44.1 kHz, and 128 Kbps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. If you use HLS or DASH instead, follow that protocol’s separate audio and media-format requirements; RTMP settings do not automatically apply.

Choose the live-ingestion protocol before the audio format

“Audio format” can mean the format of a source file or the audio encoding sent by a live encoder. For a YouTube Live broadcast, the relevant choice is the encoder’s audio codec and settings, together with the protocol used to send the stream. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into output formats for viewers, so the input settings should be chosen for compatibility with the ingestion workflow rather than to match every viewer’s device. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.

Protocol Audio and media requirements described by YouTube What it means for a nature stream
RTMP/RTMPS AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. For 5.1, AAC is required, with 48 kHz and 384 Kbps recommended. A straightforward choice for a conventional stereo ambience stream. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure option.
HLS The Live Streaming API HLS specification requires muxed audio and video in M2TS, AAC audio, and a single audio track. YouTube’s HLS setup help also lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as encoder audio options. Use the exact requirements for the encoder and HLS workflow you are configuring. The API specification and setup help describe requirements at different levels.
DASH The DASH documentation describes MP4 with H.264/AAC and WebM with VP8 or VP9 plus Vorbis or Opus. A distinct ingestion path with its own container and segment requirements; use it only when your encoder workflow supports it.

Set audio for a stereo ambience stream

RTMP or RTMPS: the usual stereo configuration

  1. In the live encoder’s audio settings, select AAC if available. YouTube also lists MP3 as supported for RTMP/RTMPS; its guidance does not designate MP3 as the preferred codec.
  2. Set the audio sample rate to 44.1 kHz and the stereo bitrate to 128 Kbps, YouTube’s recommended stereo values.
  3. Choose RTMPS as the ingestion protocol when your encoder supports it. Use the stream key and server address shown for the scheduled or active YouTube live stream, and keep the key private.
  4. Before leaving the stream unattended, test the actual video and sound in the intended configuration and check YouTube’s stream health.

These settings describe the audio sent to YouTube, not a required format for every source recording. If an encoder accepts a different source format, use its compatible input workflow and confirm the outgoing live settings.

If you need 5.1 surround sound

For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC only and recommends 48 kHz at 384 Kbps. Do not apply the stereo figures to a surround mix. Confirm that the encoder, source mix, channel layout, and YouTube ingestion configuration all support 5.1 before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

Know what changes with HLS or DASH

HLS

HLS is not simply RTMP with a different server address. Its API ingestion specification calls for audio and video muxed in M2TS, AAC, and one audio track, while YouTube’s HLS setup guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as audio codec options. Check the requirements for the specific encoder and HLS setup rather than assuming the broader setup list overrides the API specification. Google’s API guide recommends HLS media segments of one to four seconds and caps them at five seconds.

HLS is segment-based and has higher latency than RTMP, which sends a continuous stream. YouTube describes this trade-off in its HLS setup guidance. A nature ambience stream may not need ultra-low latency, but segment delay still affects how immediate the live experience feels.

DASH

DASH has its own container and segment requirements. YouTube’s examples include MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio, and WebM containing VP8 or VP9 video with Vorbis or Opus audio. Treat these as protocol-specific combinations, not as alternatives to the RTMP/RTMPS audio table. The protocol comparison identifies RTMP and RTMPS for normal, low, or ultra-low latency; HLS and DASH are encrypted options with higher latency and no ultra-low-latency support.

Test before making the stream continuous

A codec and bitrate that work on paper do not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event, then monitoring stream health. For a nature channel, use the real ambience track and the intended video or loop during the test, and verify that audio is audible and stable at the receiving end.

  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
  • Check that the selected encoder actually supports the chosen ingestion protocol and audio codec.
  • Confirm the stream is receiving audio and that the channel layout is the one you intended: stereo or 5.1.
  • Review YouTube stream health and the encoder’s connection status before leaving the broadcast running.
  • Use content you have rights to stream. A nature recording, background music, or other audio can still raise copyright issues; codec compatibility does not grant permission to broadcast it.

Troubleshoot common audio-format problems

Symptom Likely issue What to check
No sound in the live stream The encoder may not be sending an audio track, or the selected protocol configuration may not accept the chosen codec. Confirm audio is enabled in the encoder, check its meters, and verify codec and protocol requirements for the chosen ingestion path.
HLS ingest rejects the stream The muxing, container, codec, or track count may not match the HLS workflow. Check whether the workflow requires M2TS, AAC, and a single audio track under the API specification; consult the encoder-specific HLS setup as well.
Surround audio does not work as expected The configuration may use stereo values or a codec other than AAC. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC and YouTube’s recommended 48 kHz and 384 Kbps settings; verify support throughout the chain.
The stream feels delayed The chosen protocol may be segment-based or configured for a higher-latency mode. Review the protocol’s latency options. HLS has higher latency than RTMP; ultra-low latency is not supported for HLS or DASH in YouTube’s protocol comparison.
The broadcast stops or becomes unhealthy Audio format alone cannot establish a stable continuous stream; the encoder, network, or operating setup may be at fault. Check YouTube stream health and encoder status, test the real setup, and investigate the connection or unattended-running workflow.
