Choose Xbox Series X if you want native 4K gaming, a UHD Blu-ray drive, or the most graphics headroom. Choose Xbox Series S if your library is entirely digital and you play on a 1080p or 1440p screen; select the 1TB version when 512GB will not hold the games you plan to keep installed. Both support up to 120 frames per second, but 4K at 120 FPS requires a game that offers that mode and a compatible display.

Xbox Series X vs. Series S at a glance

The two consoles share the same generation features, but they target different displays, game formats and storage needs. Use this table to identify the meaningful differences before looking at retailer listings.

Match the console to your display

When Series X makes sense for a 4K TV

Series X is the appropriate choice when your priority is seeing games rendered at native 4K. A 4K television can still display Series S output, but Series S is designed around a 1440p target and commonly relies on upscaling for a 4K screen. Series X therefore provides more resolution headroom for detailed textures, distant objects and image clarity, especially in games that offer a dedicated quality mode.

#1 Best Overall
Xbox Series S | Digital Gaming Console | 1TB SSD | Includes Wireless Controller, 1440P Gaming, 120FPS, Robot White
  • BEST VALUE IN GAMING — Experience next-gen speed and performance in the smallest XBOX ever. The XBOX Series S delivers powerful all-digital gameplay in a sleek, compact design.
  • UP TO 120 FPS GAMEPLAY — Enjoy smooth, responsive gaming with frame rates up to 120 FPS, powered by XBOX Velocity Architecture, a custom NVMe SSD, and DirectX Raytracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.

A 4K panel alone does not guarantee 4K/120 gameplay. The game must include a 4K mode at the desired frame rate, and the television or monitor must accept the required signal. Both consoles can output up to 120 FPS, but that figure is a maximum capability rather than a promise that every title runs at 120.

When Series S is enough

Series S is aimed at 1440p gaming and can upscale its output to 4K. It is a sensible match for a 1080p television, a 1440p monitor or a player who values a small, lower-cost console more than native 4K rendering. At those resolutions, the visual difference from Series X is often less important than the game mode, viewing distance and screen size.

Series S still supports high-refresh play up to 120 FPS when a title provides that mode and the display can show it. Check the display’s refresh specification and HDMI input capability rather than assuming that a “120 Hz” label on a television guarantees every 120-FPS feature.

Choose based on how you own games

Series X for discs and an existing physical library

The Series X UHD Blu-ray drive lets you play compatible Xbox discs and watch UHD Blu-ray movies. It is the only choice of the two if you already own physical Xbox games, borrow discs, buy used copies, or want a physical resale option. Disc compatibility still depends on the individual title’s backward-compatibility support; the drive does not make every historical Xbox disc playable.

Series S for an all-digital library

Series S has no disc drive. Physical Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs cannot be installed or authenticated on it. You can download digital backward-compatible games that are attached to your account, and you can buy or claim future titles digitally through the Xbox store or a subscription service.

  • FASTER LOAD TIMES: Make the most of every gaming minute with Quick Resume, lightning-fast load times, and gameplay of up to 120 FPS – all powered by Xbox Velocity Architecture.
  • IN THE BOX: Xbox Series S 1TB console, one Xbox Wireless Controller, an ultra high-speed HDMI cable, power cable, and 2 AA batteries.

  • DISCOVER YOUR NEXT FAVORITE GAME: Get the most out of your Xbox Series S with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (membership sold separately) and be the first to play new games like Starfield and Forza Motorsport on day one.

Make this decision before buying: a disc you already own cannot be converted into access on Series S simply by installing the game. You would need a digital license instead.

Smart Delivery and cross-generation games

Xbox Smart Delivery supplies the best available version of a supported game for the console being used, so a single purchase can provide the Series X or Series S build when the publisher supports the feature. Microsoft says all Xbox Game Studios titles include Smart Delivery. It does not apply automatically to every third-party release, so check the product description for the specific game.

Plan storage before choosing a model

What the 512GB and 1TB Series S options mean

The 512GB Series S is the lowest-capacity configuration. The 1TB Series S provides twice the nominal capacity and is the safer choice if you intend to keep several large, current-generation games installed, share the console with family members, or use a slow internet connection that makes repeated downloads inconvenient.

Usable space is lower than the number printed on the box because the operating system reserves part of the SSD. Install sizes also change with patches, optional high-resolution packs and language files, so treat capacity as a planning limit rather than an exact game count.

Series X internal storage

Series X uses an internal SSD, but a single capacity should not be assumed across every current model or market listing. Confirm the exact capacity in the regional product listing you are considering. Regardless of capacity, its faster storage and higher graphics target make it the better fit for a large 4K-oriented library when you want fewer compromises in installed content.

Why Series S games can be smaller

Xbox program-management director Jason Ronald explained in Xbox Wire in 2020 that Series S targets 1440p at 60 FPS, with support for up to 120 FPS. Because many games do not need their highest-level 4K textures on that console, their files are often up to 30% smaller on average. That is an average observation for many Series S games, not a guarantee for every title or update.

Adding an expansion card

The dedicated Storage Expansion Card works in either console and matches the performance of the internal SSD. It is the practical way to add space for Series-optimized games without moving them before play. Factor the card into the total purchase cost if you are considering the 512GB Series S or expect a large installed library.

Using a standard USB drive

USB 3.1 storage is useful for archiving games and for running backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Series-optimized games must be stored on the internal SSD or the dedicated expansion card to run. A USB drive can therefore reduce re-downloads, but it does not replace the expansion card for current-generation games.

Storage task Internal SSD Dedicated expansion card Standard USB 3.1 drive
Run Series-optimized games Yes Yes No; move them back before playing
Run Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox backward-compatible games Yes Yes Yes
Archive games for later Yes Yes Yes
Performance match for the internal SSD Baseline Designed to match it Not equivalent for Series-optimized titles

Understand the shared performance features

Velocity Architecture and Quick Resume

Both consoles use Xbox Velocity Architecture, the storage and software design that supports fast asset streaming and shorter transitions in supported games. Quick Resume lets you suspend compatible titles and return to them later without restarting from the beginning. The number of games that can remain suspended varies with each title and system state, so treat it as a convenience rather than a fixed capacity.

HDMI 2.1 and high-refresh output

Each console has HDMI 2.1 output. To use a high-refresh mode, connect the console to an input on the display that supports the required bandwidth and enable the display’s compatible gaming settings. A receiver, switch or older cable in the signal path can prevent the console from negotiating the mode you expect.

Backward compatibility across four generations

Microsoft says both systems support thousands of games across four Xbox generations. “Thousands” describes the overall backward-compatible catalogue, not every game released for those systems. Verify an individual title’s compatibility and whether you own it digitally or on disc before choosing a disc-free console.

How budget changes the right choice

Compare total ownership cost, not only the console

Regional prices change by retailer, country, tax and promotion, and Microsoft does not publish one universal current price for every market. Compare the complete setup:

  • The console model and its included controller.
  • The storage capacity you will actually need.
  • An expansion card if your Series S library will exceed the internal SSD.
  • Games you must repurchase digitally if you move from a disc collection to Series S.
  • A suitable 4K/120-capable display only if those modes matter to you.

A cheaper Series S can lose its advantage if you add an expansion card immediately or replace a substantial physical library with digital purchases. Conversely, Series X may be unnecessary spending when you already use a 1080p screen and never buy discs.

Game Pass and digital purchasing

Both consoles suit a subscription-led or digital-purchase library. Game Pass titles are downloaded to the console, so storage planning still matters even when the games are included in a subscription. A subscription does not make physical discs usable on Series S, and removing a game from the service can require purchasing it to keep playing.

A practical decision process

  1. List your display modes. Write down the panel resolution and refresh rate you actually use. Choose Series X when native 4K is a priority; choose Series S when 1080p or 1440p meets your needs.
  2. Inventory your games. Separate disc games from digital licenses. Any important disc collection points to Series X.
  3. Estimate simultaneous installs. Count the games you want available without redownloading, include other household users and allow room for updates. If that estimate is tight on 512GB, start with the 1TB Series S or budget for an expansion card.
  4. Check each must-play title. Confirm backward compatibility, Smart Delivery support and the performance modes advertised for your chosen console.
  5. Price the complete setup locally. Compare current retailer listings in your market, including storage accessories and any games you would need to rebuy digitally.
  6. Verify the connection path. For 4K or 120-FPS play, use a compatible HDMI 2.1 display input and remove older switches or receivers that cannot pass the signal.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Buying Series S for a disc collection

Symptom: You discover that your Xbox One or Xbox 360 discs cannot be installed. Fix: Choose Series X, or keep a disc-compatible Xbox and use Series S only for a separate digital library.

Assuming every 4K television needs Series X

Symptom: You pay for Series X but play mostly 1080p games at a distance where native 4K is not important. Fix: Decide from your actual games and viewing conditions; Series S can upscale to 4K and still offers up to 120 FPS in supported modes.

Expecting 120 FPS in every game

Symptom: The console and television are connected correctly, but a title remains at 30 or 60 FPS. Fix: Look for a performance mode in that game’s settings and verify that the developer supports 120 FPS. The console’s maximum output does not override a game’s frame-rate design.

Using USB storage as an expansion-card substitute

Symptom: A Series-optimized game is visible on the USB drive but will not launch. Fix: Move it to the internal SSD or the dedicated Storage Expansion Card. Keep the USB drive for archival storage and older backward-compatible games.

Choosing 512GB without considering updates

Symptom: A few large games and patches leave too little free space. Fix: Select the 1TB Series S, add the dedicated expansion card, or adopt a rotation in which completed games are archived to USB storage.

Recommendations by player profile

Buy Series X if you:

  • Own or plan to buy physical Xbox games.
  • Want native 4K output and the broadest graphics headroom.
  • Use UHD Blu-ray discs.
  • Want one console for a large digital and disc-based library.

Buy Series S 1TB if you:

  • Buy games digitally and do not need an optical drive.
  • Use a 1080p or 1440p display.
  • Want more room than the 512GB model without immediately adding external storage.
  • Prefer a smaller initial purchase and accept lower-resolution targets than Series X.

Buy Series S 512GB if you:

  • Have a modest rotating library or reliable high-speed internet for redownloads.
  • Play primarily on 1080p or 1440p.
  • Are comfortable archiving games to USB storage or adding an expansion card later.

Bottom line

Series X is the all-purpose choice for native 4K, discs and maximum graphics headroom. Series S is the better value for a digital-only player on a 1080p or 1440p display; choose 1TB when storage turnover would otherwise become a daily nuisance. Both deliver the same generation-wide software features, but the display, game format and storage decisions determine which one will feel right after the purchase.
