The right expansion drive depends first on your console and whether you need to play PS5 games from it. For a PS5 internal upgrade, buy a PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe Key M SSD, 250GB to 8TB, with Sony’s recommended sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s. The complete SSD-and-heatsink assembly must fit within 110 × 25 × 11.25mm, and cooling hardware is required. M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
Use an external SuperSpeed USB drive when you want simpler plug-in storage, PS4 games played directly, or a place to archive PS5 games. PS5 games stored on USB must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or an internal M.2 SSD before they can be played.
Choose the expansion path before choosing a drive
PlayStation storage has two different jobs: running games and holding games. An internal M.2 SSD in a PS5 can do both for PS5 and PS4 software. USB extended storage is easier to install, but it has different rules, especially for PS5 games.

When internal M.2 storage is the better choice
Choose an internal M.2 SSD if your priority is launching PS5 games without a copy-back step. It behaves as additional high-speed console storage after installation and formatting. It also avoids a USB cable and an external enclosure occupying space beside the console.
When USB storage is the better choice
Choose a USB SSD or hard drive when convenience, portability or lower cost matters more than running PS5 games directly. USB storage is useful for an installed PS4 library and for archiving PS5 titles that you do not play every day. A USB SSD generally gives faster transfers and quieter operation than a mechanical hard drive, but Sony’s compatibility rules are about the USB connection and capacity, not a particular external brand.
PS5 internal M.2 SSD requirements
Every item below applies to the complete installed assembly. Checking only the bare drive can lead to an SSD that is electrically compatible but too thick once its heatsink is attached.
Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe and Key M
The PS5 expansion slot accepts an M.2 NVMe SSD using PCIe Gen4x4 and an M-key connector. “M.2” describes the shape, not the protocol: an M.2 SATA drive can look similar while using a different interface. Sony’s explicit guidance is: “M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported.” Do not substitute an M.2 SATA model, PCIe Gen3 model or a drive with a different key layout.
Speed: 5,500MB/s is the recommended target
Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s. Treat this as a selection filter, not a promise that every game will load exactly like the console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD. Published sequential figures are usually laboratory or manufacturer specifications, and real results vary with the drive, firmware, workload and free space.
Use the manufacturer’s specification for the exact capacity you intend to buy. A product family can quote different speeds for 1TB, 2TB and 4TB versions, so do not assume that the smallest or largest model has the same rating.

Physical size: measure the cooled assembly
Sony limits the complete M.2 drive, including any heatsink or heat-transfer sheet, to:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Maximum length: 110mm
- Maximum width: 25mm
- Maximum thickness: 11.25mm
Supported drive lengths are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. The common 2280 size is not automatically safe: a thick heatsink, raised controller cover or double-sided construction can exceed the thickness limit. Confirm the supplier’s drawing or specification for the assembled height, not just the naked PCB.
Cooling: a heatsink is required
NVMe drives can generate substantial heat during sustained transfers. Sony requires effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. A drive with a factory-fitted heatsink simplifies installation, provided its total dimensions remain inside the 110 × 25 × 11.25mm envelope. If you buy a bare SSD, select a compatible low-profile heatsink and verify the combined height before installing it.
Do not stack multiple cooling covers or improvise with a heatsink that obstructs the slot cover. The goal is continuous contact between the controller or NAND area and the thermal material while preserving the console’s cover and screw clearances.
Capacity: 250GB to 8TB
The supported internal range is 250GB through 8TB. Usable space is lower after formatting and system overhead, so compare capacity with the size of your installed library rather than the number printed on the box. Sony does not designate one universal “best” capacity.

External USB storage rules for PS5 and PS4
Minimum connection and capacity
Sony’s USB extended-storage guidance calls for a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5Gbps or faster and a capacity from 250GB to 8TB. Use a direct connection to a compatible console USB port rather than an unpowered hub. The drive must be formatted by the console before it becomes extended storage, and that formatting erases data already on the drive.
PS5 game behavior
PS5 games can be downloaded or moved to USB extended storage for safekeeping, but they cannot be launched from there. Sony states that a stored PS5 game must be copied back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage before play. Copying is normally faster than downloading again, but it still takes time and requires enough free space on the destination.
PS4 game behavior
Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage on a PS5 or PS4. Applications can be installed and moved between PS4 system storage and extended storage. This makes a USB drive a practical way to keep a large PS4 collection available without consuming the console’s internal capacity.
| Library type | Internal PS5 M.2 | PS5 USB extended storage | PS4 USB extended storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 games | Install and play directly | Store and move; copy back to play | Not applicable to a PS4 console |
| PS4 games | Install and play directly | Play directly | Play directly |
How much capacity do you need?
Capacity planning is more useful than choosing the largest number available. List the games you expect to keep installed, add room for patches and downloadable content, and leave free space for normal drive operation. If you regularly rotate games, include the titles you are likely to reinstall during the next year rather than only the games installed today.
| Capacity | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | A smaller active library or a secondary collection | Fills quickly when several large PS5 titles and add-ons are installed |
| 2TB | General-purpose PS5 expansion for many players | Costs more than 1TB but reduces frequent uninstalling and copying |
| 4TB | A large installed library, households sharing one console, or frequent game rotation | Higher purchase price; confirm the exact model’s speed and cooling dimensions |
| 8TB | The largest supported internal or USB capacity for an extensive library | Highest cost and no guarantee that every third-party M.2 model will work |
“Is 2TB enough?” has no universal answer. It is a sensible search starting point for a general-purpose buyer, but the correct size is the one that leaves room for your installed games and update habits. If you mainly archive PS5 games and play only a few at once, a USB drive can provide more holding capacity without replacing the internal M.2 slot.
A practical buying workflow
- Identify the console. A PS5 offers both an internal M.2 slot and USB extended storage. Sony’s documented expansion path for a PS4 is USB extended storage.
- Decide where games must run. If PS5 games must launch from the added drive, choose an internal M.2 SSD. If you only need PS4 playback or PS5 archiving, USB storage may be sufficient.
- Filter internal drives by interface. Require PCIe Gen4x4, NVMe and an M-key connector. Exclude M.2 SATA and PCIe Gen3 models.
- Check the read-speed rating. Target at least 5,500MB/s sequential read, using the specification for the exact capacity variant.
- Verify the assembled dimensions. Confirm that the SSD plus heatsink stays within 110 × 25 × 11.25mm and uses one of the supported lengths: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
- Confirm cooling. Select an integrated heatsink or purchase a low-profile heatsink and thermal sheet that fit the console’s limits.
- Choose capacity from your library. Use 1TB for a modest collection, 2TB as a broad general-purpose starting point, and 4TB or 8TB for larger libraries.
- Check current console guidance. Update the PS5 system software and review the instructions for your exact console revision before opening the enclosure.
Installing and formatting an internal PS5 SSD
The exact cover-removal procedure varies by PS5 hardware revision, so follow Sony’s current model-specific instructions. The general sequence is:

- Back up important saves and confirm that the SSD is empty or that its contents are stored elsewhere. Formatting the expansion drive erases data on it.
- Update the console system software before installation.
- Shut down the PS5 completely, disconnect its power and allow it to cool.
- Remove the console cover and the M.2 slot cover according to the model’s instructions.
- Install the spacer in the hole matching the SSD length, insert the M.2 drive at an angle, lower it into place and secure it with the supplied screw.
- Fit the heat-transfer material or verify that the factory heatsink is seated without exceeding the height limit. Reinstall the slot cover and console cover.
- Reconnect the console and start it. When prompted, format the M.2 SSD. The console’s format process prepares it for games and deletes existing data on the drive.
- After formatting, open the storage settings and choose the default installation location if you want new PS5 or PS4 games directed to the expansion drive.
If the console does not detect the drive, power down and recheck connector seating, spacer position, screw placement, heatsink height and the drive’s interface. A drive that is M.2-shaped but SATA-based will not become compatible through formatting.

- Use a USB drive rated for SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or faster and sized between 250GB and 8TB.
- Back up any files you need. The console’s extended-storage format removes existing content.
- Connect the drive directly to a compatible high-speed USB port on the console.
- Open the console’s storage settings and select the option to format the connected drive as extended storage.
- Choose the installation or movement options for PS4 applications and decide which PS5 games to archive when internal space is limited.
Safely stop using the drive through the console’s storage controls before unplugging it. Disconnecting during a transfer can corrupt the game installation and may require a re-download or copy from backup.

Buying by the “M.2” label alone
M.2 is a physical format shared by SATA and NVMe products. Check the protocol, PCIe generation and key type. The required combination is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe Key M; M.2 SATA is explicitly unsupported.
Measuring only the bare SSD
The 11.25mm thickness limit includes cooling hardware. Compare the assembled height and width with Sony’s limits, including any thermal pad, before installation.
Assuming a USB SSD runs PS5 games
USB storage can hold PS5 games but cannot launch them. Move the title to the internal storage or M.2 SSD before playing. For direct USB play, use PS4 games.
Ignoring the speed figure for a particular capacity
Manufacturers often publish different sequential-read speeds across capacities. Verify the 1TB, 2TB, 4TB or 8TB specification you are actually ordering rather than relying on a family headline.

Installing without updating the console
Update PS5 system software before fitting the drive. If the console still rejects a compliant-looking SSD, install the latest available firmware, shut down fully, reseat the drive and repeat the format process.
Expecting identical performance in every game
Sony does not guarantee that every compatible third-party M.2 SSD will behave exactly like the internal Ultra-High Speed SSD. The 5,500MB/s recommendation is an important compatibility target, not a universal gameplay benchmark.
Example of a drive specification that matches the brief
SanDisk documents the Optimus GX PRO 850P NVMe SSD for PS5 and PS5 Pro as a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive with a PS5-oriented heatsink and direct gameplay support. SanDisk lists up to 7,300MB/s read speed for its 1TB–4TB models. Those figures exceed Sony’s 5,500MB/s recommended read target, but you should still verify the exact model’s assembled dimensions and current compatibility guidance before buying.
