Choose an SD card your camera supports, then confirm how the photos will reach your phone or computer. A standard SD card only stores files: wireless transfer requires Wi-Fi built into the camera and a supported companion app, or a compatible Wi-Fi SD card. If neither is available, use a card reader or cable.
Will any SD card transfer photos to your phone wirelessly?
No. A regular SD card does not create a wireless connection. The wireless feature must come from the camera and its supported app, or from a Wi-Fi SD card designed to expose files wirelessly. The SD Association announced standardized wireless communication for SD cards, and Toshiba’s FlashAir announcements document one historical product line: SD Association wireless announcement and Toshiba FlashAir announcement.
Before buying a wireless card, check whether your exact camera model already supports wireless transfer through the manufacturer’s app. For example, FUJIFILM’s image-import instructions describe a workflow for specified compatible cameras; that support should not be assumed for other models or brands.
Check camera compatibility before choosing capacity or speed
Do not rely on the card slot’s physical fit alone. Look up the exact camera model’s manual or official compatibility information and check the SD family it accepts, its maximum card capacity, whether it takes full-size SD or microSD, and any minimum write-speed requirement. The SD Association advises confirming compatibility from device markings, the manual, or manufacturer information: SD card capacity choices and compatibility.

Card family and capacity are related but distinct from transfer speed. Current SD Association capacity guidance defines the families as follows:
| Card family | Capacity range | Associated file system | Practical check |
|---|---|---|---|
| SDHC | More than 2 GB through 32 GB | FAT32 | Confirm the camera supports SDHC and the chosen capacity. |
| SDXC | More than 32 GB through 2 TB | exFAT | SD-only or SDHC-only hosts do not support SDXC; confirm explicit SDXC support. |
| SDUC | More than 2 TB through 128 TB | Not stated in the cited capacity guidance | This is a standard capacity range, not a recommendation. Use only if the camera explicitly supports it. |
These are standards ranges, not a reason to buy the largest card. Choose a capacity within the camera’s supported range and appropriate for how much you shoot. More storage does not make wireless transfer faster. See the SD Association capacity overview.

Choose speed for the camera’s recording needs—not a headline read-speed number
Speed-class marks describe minimum performance levels; UHS describes a bus interface used for communication between a card and host. If you record video or shoot long bursts, meet the camera maker’s stated speed-class requirement. For transferring still photos, distinguish the card’s in-camera write performance from reading files during offload. A card’s advertised maximum read speed does not establish the camera-to-phone wireless speed, and a UHS card cannot deliver its full interface potential unless the host supports the relevant bus mode.
Check the camera’s requirements and the card markings rather than selecting a tier from a maximum-speed claim alone. The SD Association explains speed classes and bus-speed interfaces.

Choose a transfer method that is supported now
| Option | What it does | What to verify | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera Wi-Fi and manufacturer app | Sends images wirelessly from supported camera models. | Exact camera model, app and phone support, supported file types, and the transfer steps. | Avoids dependence on a legacy wireless card, but the workflow varies by maker and model. |
| Wi-Fi SD card, such as historical FlashAir products | Lets a compatible card expose stored files wirelessly. | Camera’s card-family and capacity support, current app and firmware support, and the card’s authenticity and availability. | Could suit a compatible older camera, but current availability and continued app support are not established by the cited historical documentation. |
| USB SD card reader | Reads the card on a computer or a phone with a compatible adapter. | Card form factor, reader interface, and phone or operating-system adapter support. | Wired, but avoids relying on card-side Wi-Fi compatibility. |
Casio’s support page says a compatible FlashAir card enables wireless viewing and copying for the named camera, which illustrates why compatibility must be checked model by model: Casio camera support. That example does not establish compatibility with other cameras, current card stock, or whether a used card can still be configured.
Use this buying checklist
- Find the exact camera documentation. Confirm supported SD family, maximum capacity, card size, and required write class or bus. Do not infer compatibility from physical fit.
- Pick a supported capacity. Match it to your shooting volume; capacity alone does not improve wireless transfer.
- Meet the camera’s speed requirement. Give video and long bursts priority when choosing a sustained-write class. For still-photo offload, remember that in-camera writes and transfer reads are different tasks.
- Identify where wireless capability comes from. Check for the camera’s supported app workflow first; otherwise verify a Wi-Fi SD card’s compatibility and current software support. If neither works, plan on a reader or cable.
- Account for both sides of the connection. With UHS cards and readers, the host and card determine the available bus mode and realized performance.
Format only after checking the camera instructions
Formatting erases the card’s contents. Follow the camera maker’s instructions before formatting; for SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards, the SD Association recommends its SD Memory Card Formatter in its capacity guidance. Back up files you need before formatting.
