Choose an editor by checking two things separately: whether it has the programming tools your project needs, and whether it displays and lets you edit Arabic text correctly alongside Latin code. IntelliJ IDEA documents controls for the base direction of bidirectional strings; Visual Studio Code (VS Code) documents language tooling, including Python support, but those language features do not establish full right-to-left source-editing support. Test both with a sample from your own project before committing.
What does “Arabic support” mean for programming?
The phrase can describe several different capabilities. Decide which ones you actually need; support for one does not imply support for the others.
- Localized interface: menus, settings, and messages translated into Arabic.
- Programming-language tools: features such as completion, linting, debugging, and testing for the language used by your project.
- Arabic prose in code: comments and string values containing Arabic text.
- Arabic identifiers or localized syntax: using Arabic names in code, or a programming language whose syntax itself is localized. The product documentation discussed here does not establish comprehensive Arabic localization of programming syntax.
- Right-to-left editing: readable display and predictable navigation and selection when Arabic and left-to-right code appear together.
If your need is Arabic comments or user-facing strings, focus on the last item as well as language tooling. If you require an Arabic interface or Arabic-language programming syntax, verify those specific capabilities separately; the sources cited below do not confirm them.
Why mixed Arabic and code needs a real test
Arabic is written right to left, while Latin identifiers and much programming syntax are generally read left to right. Unicode’s bidirectional algorithm determines how text in different directions is displayed. A line’s visual order is not necessarily the same as its underlying character order: Unicode’s program-text example explains that a plain left-to-right display can make a mixed-direction expression appear to have different grouping or meaning. The standard discusses treating program-text parts as directional segments to improve display. See the Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Paragraph direction matters too. The Unicode Consortium’s bidirectional text FAQ explains that the appearance of mixed Arabic and English depends on paragraph direction, and automatic direction inference can be wrong. An explicit direction can override the inferred choice. A right-aligned line alone therefore does not prove that the source is displayed or edited correctly.
What the documented IDE and editor features establish
| Consideration | IntelliJ IDEA | Visual Studio Code |
|---|---|---|
| Documented direction behavior | JetBrains documents a content-based default direction for bidirectional strings and a setting to choose a fixed right-to-left or left-to-right base direction for bidirectional strings and tokens. This documents direction controls, not full RTL behavior across every source-editing interaction. See Text direction. | The cited language and Python documentation describes programming support, not full RTL source editing. See Programming Languages and Python in Visual Studio Code. |
| Language workflow | The cited IntelliJ documentation concerns text direction, so it does not establish a broad comparison of language features. | Language features vary by language and extension. The Python documentation covers completion, linting, debugging, environment selection, and testing. Python support also requires a Python interpreter. |
| Extensions | Check the specific language and workflow in the installed release. | Language-specific extensions can add features. Marketplace listings include third-party RTL-related extensions; their behavior and maintenance should be checked rather than assumed. Examples: RTL Editor and Arabic RTL Support. |
| When to consider it | Consider IntelliJ IDEA if documented base-direction controls for strings and tokens matter to your work, then test the source-editing surface you will use. | Consider VS Code if its language ecosystem and extensions suit the project, then test mixed-direction editing in the relevant files. |
These sources do not establish a universal winner or a controlled product benchmark. The right choice depends on your language, operating system, installed release, and editing workflow.

How to evaluate an editor with your own Arabic code
- Prepare a representative file. Include Arabic comments and string values beside Latin identifiers, punctuation, numbers, parentheses, and operators. Use examples similar to what you expect to edit, not just a standalone Arabic paragraph.
- Check reading and shaping. Confirm that Arabic letters join and shape correctly, that Arabic runs read in the intended direction, and that mixed-direction punctuation and operators remain understandable. Unicode’s bidirectional algorithm guidance explains why visual ordering can be misleading; a 2023 paper on programming-language localization discusses alignment, direction, and Arabic letter shaping as separate editing concerns: A Framework for the Localization of Programming Languages.
- Try normal editing actions. Click into mixed text, move the cursor with the keyboard, and select text in both directions. Check whether the cursor and selection follow the intended characters, not merely whether the line looks right-aligned.
- Confirm where direction controls apply. If the editor offers a direction setting, test it in the exact source file and surface you use. Do not assume a control for strings, documentation, chat, or a separate text editor also governs source code.
- Verify project tooling. Confirm that the language extension and required interpreter, debugger, test runner, or other tools work for your project. For VS Code Python work, Microsoft documents the Python extension’s features and interpreter requirement on its Python documentation page.
- Review any third-party extension. Check its supported file types, version history, and recent maintenance in the Marketplace. A listing shows that an extension is available, not that its quality or compatibility has been independently validated.
Make the choice against your actual workflow
Shortlist editors based on the language tools you need, then let the mixed-direction sample decide whether their Arabic editing behavior is usable. IntelliJ IDEA has documented base-direction controls for bidirectional strings and tokens; VS Code has language-specific tooling and an extension ecosystem. Neither fact alone proves that every Arabic source-code scenario will display and behave correctly. Because product settings and extensions can change, test the installed versions on the operating system and files you will use.
