Choose the shortest ICICI Bank fixed-deposit tenure that reaches your actual spending date, then select cumulative or monthly/quarterly interest according to your cash-flow need. Check your customer category, deposit-size band, tax position and premature-closure cost before booking. ICICI Bank marks its current domestic rate table effective October 5, 2026, but says rates can change without prior notice, so verify the live table on the booking date.

Start with the date you need the money

An FD tenure is useful only when its maturity date fits your goal. Begin with a calendar date rather than with the highest percentage in the rate table. List when the money will be required for a house payment, tuition, an emergency reserve, a planned purchase or another obligation. Count backward to decide how long the deposit can remain untouched.

Use a short tenure for near-term spending

If you expect to need the funds within months, choose a term that matures before the expense. A long FD can force you to close early, which means the bank recalculates interest for the period the money actually stayed invested and applies a premature-closure penalty. A slightly lower rate on a correctly timed deposit can therefore produce more usable money than a higher rate that you must break.

Use a longer tenure only for committed money

Longer terms make sense when you have a separate emergency reserve and can leave this principal invested through maturity. Do not extend a deposit merely to capture a headline rate. Record the maturity date in your calendar and keep enough liquid cash outside the FD for foreseeable bills.

Match the term to the bank’s bands

ICICI’s published bands do not all end on round calendar years. For example, the table separates 1 year to 389 days from 390 days to under 18 months, and it distinguishes 18 months to 2 years from 2 years 1 day to 3 years. Select a band that ends on or before your target date; do not assume that “one year” and “365 days” are interchangeable for every booking screen.

Current ICICI domestic FD rates for deposits below ₹3 crore

The following figures are from ICICI Bank’s domestic-deposit table marked effective October 5, 2026. They apply to the listed deposit band below ₹3 crore. “General” means the standard resident category shown by the bank; “senior citizen” is the resident senior-citizen category eligible for the preferential rate. Rates can change without prior notice.

Tenure band General customer Senior citizen How to read it
7 days to 29 days 3.50% 3.50% No senior-citizen premium is shown for this band.
1 year to 389 days 6.25% 6.75% Use when the maturity date falls within this range.
390 days to under 18 months 6.25% 6.75% A separate band from the preceding 1-year range.
18 months to 2 years 6.30% 6.80% Check the exact day count offered at booking.
2 years 1 day to 3 years 6.45% 6.95% Ends at three years, not beyond it.
3 years 1 day to 5 years 6.50% 7.10% Highest senior-citizen rate displayed in this table.
5 years 1 day to 10 years 6.50% 7.00% Highest general-customer rate displayed; the senior rate is below the preceding band.

On this specific table, the highest displayed general-customer rate is 6.50%, available in both the 3-years-1-day-to-5-years and 5-years-1-day-to-10-years bands. The highest displayed senior-citizen rate is 7.10% in the 3-years-1-day-to-5-years band. Those are rate-table observations, not a recommendation to lock money for either period.

Why the highest percentage may be the wrong choice

A rate is only one part of the result. Compare the date you receive principal, the amount of interim income, the cost of closing early and the tax you will owe. A deposit maturing after your planned expense is not equivalent to one maturing on time, even if its nominal rate is higher.

Choose cumulative or monthly/quarterly interest

ICICI Bank’s FAQ says non-cumulative interest can be credited monthly or quarterly to the linked account. A cumulative (maturity-payout) FD keeps the return in the deposit until the end of the term, while a non-cumulative option sends interest out during the term. Select the payout pattern before comparing rates and maturity proceeds.

Option Payment timing Best suited to Main trade-off
Cumulative Principal and accumulated interest are paid at maturity under the booked terms. A known goal at the end of the term, such as a future purchase or tuition payment. You do not receive regular cash flow; breaking the FD for income can trigger repricing and a penalty.
Monthly interest Interest is credited monthly to the linked account. Regular household income or a planned monthly supplement. Interest is paid out rather than retained for the maturity amount, so the end-of-term cash flow differs from a cumulative deposit.
Quarterly interest Interest is credited quarterly to the linked account. Expenses that arrive every few months or a less frequent income schedule. You wait longer between credits and give up the single maturity-payout structure.

How to compare the two fairly

Compare like with like: same principal, same tenure, same customer category and the same rate table. For a cumulative FD, focus on the maturity amount shown by ICICI’s calculator or booking screen. For monthly or quarterly interest, total the scheduled credits and add the principal returned at maturity. Then estimate tax on the interest for your own income-tax position. A payout frequency that feels convenient can still leave a lower after-tax amount available at the goal date.

Check senior-citizen eligibility before booking

Resident senior citizens receive preferential domestic-FD rates in the published table, but the premium is not identical across all tenures. There is no difference in the 7-to-29-day row; the listed premium is 0.50 percentage point in the one-year-through-under-18-month rows, 0.50 point at 18 months to 2 years, 0.50 point at 2 years 1 day to 3 years, 0.60 point at 3 years 1 day to 5 years, and 0.50 point at 5 years 1 day to 10 years.

Confirm that the depositor is recorded in the eligible resident senior-citizen category and that the booking screen applies the expected rate. If the account, ownership or residency status is different, the displayed rate may belong to another category.

Understand premature closure before you commit

ICICI states that withdrawing the entire deposit within seven days of the deposit date earns no interest for domestic and NRO FDs. For deposits below ₹25 crore, its listed penalty schedule is 0.50% for terms below one year and 1.00% for terms from one year to under five years; five years and above also shows a 1.00% penalty for that deposit-size band. The bank’s FAQ describes the penalty as up to 1% on the applicable interest rate.

Situation What happens Planning implication
Entire domestic or NRO FD withdrawn within 7 days No interest is paid. Do not use an FD as a seven-day cash reserve.
Closure after the initial 7 days Interest is recalculated at the rate applicable to the actual holding period, and the relevant penalty is deducted. The booked rate is not guaranteed when you close early.
Partial withdrawal or another change to the deposit Apply the specific rules shown for your product and booking channel; the published penalty figures above concern the stated deposit-size bands. Read the closure terms before relying on the FD for staged expenses.

For a deposit booked for three years but closed after 14 months, the relevant comparison is not the three-year rate. It is the rate ICICI applies to the actual 14-month holding period, less the applicable penalty. If you cannot rule out an early need, split the principal into several FDs with different maturity dates instead of placing all of it in one long deposit. This does not remove penalties on a deposit you close, but it can prevent you from disturbing the entire amount.

Calculate the after-tax return, not just the displayed rate

ICICI says FD interest is taxable under the applicable income-tax rules and is subject to tax deducted at source (TDS). The bank’s page lists an annual-interest TDS threshold of ₹50,000 for general resident customers and ₹1,00,000 for resident senior citizens. These thresholds concern the bank’s TDS process; they do not turn interest into tax-free income.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the thresholds mean

  • If the bank’s calculated annual interest reaches the applicable threshold, it may deduct TDS according to the rules in force for your customer category.
  • Interest can still be taxable in your income-tax return even when no TDS is deducted, for example because the threshold was not reached.
  • Interest from deposits held across accounts may need to be considered together when you assess your total interest and tax position.

Forms 15G and 15H

ICICI makes Forms 15G and 15H available when the depositor meets the legal eligibility conditions. Filing the appropriate form can prevent TDS in an eligible case; it does not exempt the interest from tax. Do not submit a form merely to avoid a deduction if your income and tax circumstances do not satisfy its conditions.

A practical after-tax comparison

  1. Record the gross interest shown for each tenure and payout choice.
  2. Estimate the tax on that interest using your applicable income-tax position.
  3. Subtract expected tax and any TDS timing effect from the gross cash flow.
  4. Compare the resulting amount on the date you actually need the money, not only the percentage printed in the rate table.

For a monthly or quarterly FD, assess the tax on each year’s interest and the cash you receive during that year. For a cumulative FD, remember that tax liability can arise as interest accrues even though the cash is received at maturity; use the applicable tax rules or a qualified tax adviser for your circumstances.

Decide whether a Tax Saver FD is appropriate

ICICI’s Tax Saver FD has a mandatory five-year lock-in. During that period it does not allow premature withdrawal, partial withdrawal or a loan or overdraft against the deposit. It is therefore unsuitable for money that might be needed before five years, regardless of the rate shown at booking.

A regular FD offers tenures from 7 days to 10 years and permits early closure subject to the bank’s rules, repricing and penalty. That flexibility comes with the possibility of a lower net result if you close early, but it preserves access that a Tax Saver FD does not. Choose the Tax Saver version only after confirming that the full principal can remain untouched for the lock-in and that its tax treatment fits your plan.

Check deposit size and residency rules

The rate table above is specifically for deposits below ₹3 crore. ICICI publishes different treatment for larger deposit bands, so do not apply the retail figures to a deposit of ₹3 crore or more without checking the applicable table.

NRE and NRO deposits have separate rules and rates from domestic resident deposits. The seven-day no-interest statement cited above covers domestic and NRO FDs, but it should not be used to infer the terms of an NRE product. Select the correct residency and account type in the booking flow and read that product’s conditions.

Ownership also matters operationally. Before confirming, check the name of the depositor, linked account for interest credits, nomination details and whether the senior-citizen status shown is correct. A rate that applies to one category cannot be assumed for another.

A step-by-step way to choose and book

  1. Write the goal date. Put the required spending date and the minimum amount needed beside it.
  2. Protect liquidity first. Keep emergency cash outside the FD and decide whether any part of the principal might be needed earlier.
  3. Identify the product category. Confirm domestic resident, NRO, NRE or another applicable category, and whether the depositor qualifies as a resident senior citizen.
  4. Confirm the deposit band. Check whether the principal is below ₹3 crore or belongs to a larger band with separate rates.
  5. Read the live rate row. Use the exact day-count band offered on ICICI Bank’s current rate page or booking screen. Record the effective date because rates can change without prior notice.
  6. Select the payout method. Choose cumulative for a maturity goal, or monthly/quarterly credit when interim income is more important.
  7. Estimate the net result. Account for taxable interest, possible TDS and your own tax rate instead of comparing headline rates alone.
  8. Review closure terms. Note the seven-day no-interest rule for domestic and NRO deposits, the applicable premature-closure penalty and the fact that interest is repriced for the actual holding period.
  9. Check the maturity instruction. Confirm whether principal and interest should be credited to the linked account or handled according to the maturity instruction available in the booking flow.
  10. Save the confirmation. Keep the deposit receipt, tenure, rate, payout frequency, maturity date and closure terms with your financial records.

Decision guide for common situations

Your situation Starting choice What to verify before confirming
You need the money in a few months Use the shortest band that matures before the expense. Exact maturity date and the consequence of closing within seven days.
You need a known lump sum at the end of the term Consider a cumulative FD with a maturity date aligned to the goal. Gross maturity amount, after-tax amount and maturity instruction.
You need regular income Consider monthly or quarterly non-cumulative interest. Credit schedule, linked account and tax on the periodic interest.
You qualify as a senior citizen Compare the senior-citizen row for the same tenure rather than assuming one universal premium. Eligibility recorded correctly and the rate shown at booking.
You may need part of the principal early Use shorter or staggered regular FDs rather than a Tax Saver FD. Early-closure repricing, penalty and whether the chosen product permits the required access.
You can lock the money for five years and need the Tax Saver structure Evaluate a Tax Saver FD. Mandatory lock-in and the absence of premature withdrawal, partial withdrawal and loan/overdraft during it.
Your deposit is ₹3 crore or more Use the rate table for the larger deposit band. Do not use the sub-₹3-crore figures as an estimate.
You are an NRE or NRO depositor Use the applicable non-domestic product rules. Residency-specific rate, tax and withdrawal conditions.

Worked planning examples

Example: a payment due in 14 months

First identify the date on which the payment must be available. A term that matures after that date is unsuitable even if its displayed rate is higher. Compare the 390-days-to-under-18-months row with any shorter row that still reaches the date, then select cumulative payout if you need one lump sum. If there is a meaningful chance of needing the money earlier, keep the amount in a shorter FD or divide it into staggered deposits.

Example: income needed every month

Use the non-cumulative option and confirm that the interest will be credited monthly to the linked account. Budget for tax on the interest and do not treat the monthly credit as tax-free income. Keep the principal’s maturity date visible so that the income plan does not accidentally become an unplanned rollover.

Example: a senior citizen choosing between five-year bands

Compare the 3-years-1-day-to-5-years band with the 5-years-1-day-to-10-years band using the actual goal date. The former has the higher senior-citizen rate in the cited table, but the latter keeps money committed for longer. If the funds are needed in four years, the longer band could create an early-closure cost that outweighs its convenience.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Chasing the top rate: Start with the maturity date and liquidity requirement; use the rate only after those are satisfied.
  • Confusing payout with return: Monthly or quarterly credits change when you receive cash and how much remains for maturity. Compare the complete cash-flow pattern.
  • Ignoring tax: A rate before tax is not the amount you keep. Include taxable interest and possible TDS in the comparison.
  • Applying retail rates to a large deposit: The cited table is for deposits below ₹3 crore. Larger bands have separate treatment.
  • Assuming senior-citizen status is automatic: Verify the category and the rate displayed for the depositor.
  • Using a Tax Saver FD as an emergency fund: Its five-year lock-in removes the early-access options available with a regular FD.
  • Forgetting the seven-day rule: A full withdrawal of a domestic or NRO FD within seven days earns no interest.
  • Relying on an old screenshot: The bank says rates may change without prior notice. Recheck the live table immediately before booking.

Final checklist before you confirm

  • The maturity date is on or before the date you need the money.
  • The selected customer category, residency and deposit-size band are correct.
  • The rate’s effective date is current and the exact tenure row matches the booking.
  • Cumulative, monthly or quarterly payout matches your cash-flow plan.
  • You have estimated tax and understood the TDS threshold that may apply.
  • You know the early-closure repricing and penalty, including the seven-day no-interest rule for domestic and NRO deposits.
  • You are not placing money needed within five years into a Tax Saver FD.
  • The linked account, maturity instruction and deposit receipt details are accurate.

ICICI Bank describes FDs as offering assured returns and allows customers to select tenures from 7 days to 10 years, but the useful choice is the one that reaches your goal with an acceptable cash-flow and tax outcome. Recheck the bank’s live table on the day you book and treat every displayed rate as conditional on the product, customer category, deposit size and tenure you actually select.
