Choose an HDD only after confirming that your server, NAS, controller, and enclosure support its exact model, capacity, interface, and sector format. Then weigh usable capacity, workload, operating cost, and support against the work required to recover from a failure. For backups, keep a separate recoverable copy—and an offsite copy where the risks warrant it—rather than treating a large drive or redundant array as a complete backup plan.

Start with the data you need to store and recover

Calculate usable capacity, not just raw drive capacity

Estimate the current data set, expected growth, retention period, and space consumed by snapshots or version history. Then account for redundancy overhead, filesystem overhead, hot spares, and reserve capacity. The total printed on a drive is raw capacity; the space available to hold your data after these deductions is what matters for planning.

The right allowance depends on your retention and availability requirements, so there is no universal capacity multiplier. Write down how much data you need to retain and how much downtime or data loss you can tolerate before comparing drive counts.

Match the drive to the access pattern

Distinguish a mostly sequential backup or archive workload from random access, sustained multi-user service, or a mix. Seagate lists its Exos family for uses including dense RAID or erasure-coded storage, enterprise backup and restore, large distributed file systems, high-bay-count NAS, and archiving. These are manufacturer-identified use cases, not proof that every Exos model fits every system or workload. Seagate Exos product information

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Verify exact compatibility before comparing price

Do not assume that drives with the same capacity are interchangeable. Check the exact model against the documentation and qualification list for your server, NAS, controller, or enclosure. Confirm:

  • Supported drive capacity and interface, such as SATA or SAS.
  • Sector format and recording technology.
  • Controller and firmware support, plus backplane and enclosure compatibility.
  • Operating-system and storage-software support.
  • Cooling and power requirements in the intended chassis.

Product-family pages may cover several models and configurations. For example, Seagate’s support listing identifies the EXOS 32TB as model ST32000NM004K and lists a five-year limited warranty; that is a model to investigate, not a universal recommendation. Check the exact model documentation and regional warranty terms at purchase time. Seagate Exos support and product listing

Compare total deployment cost and density

Purchase price per raw terabyte is only one input. Compare cost per usable terabyte after redundancy and overhead, and consider how much usable storage each supported drive bay or rack unit provides. Include costs that can change the economics of a high-capacity drive:

  • Power and cooling over the expected operating period.
  • Drive bays, enclosures, controllers, and rack space.
  • Warranty and support, plus the logistics of keeping and installing replacements.
  • Restore time and the operational impact of rebuilding or recovering the data.

Seagate describes high areal density as a way to increase capacity within a standard 3.5-inch footprint and lists dense-storage and archiving applications. Treat this as a manufacturer claim about the product family; your own system’s measurements and actual quotes determine whether a higher-density drive is cost-effective. Its 2025 data sheet says the Exos family offers up to 32TB in a 3.5-inch form factor, not that every model or configuration reaches that capacity. Seagate Exos 24TB–32TB data sheet

Read reliability figures as different kinds of evidence

Workload ratings, warranty periods, manufacturer reliability ratings, and field failure statistics answer different questions. Use them as inputs to a monitoring and replacement plan—not as guarantees that a drive will last a particular time.

Manufacturer specifications describe a rated product

Western Digital lists the Ultrastar DC HC690 at up to 32TB, with a 550TB/year workload rating, up to 2.5 million hours MTBF, and a five-year limited warranty. Those are manufacturer specifications for that model. MTBF is not a promised individual lifespan, and the workload rating is not a forecast of how long a drive will operate in your deployment. Fleet statistics describe the operator’s population

Backblaze reported a 1.36% annualized failure rate for 2025 across 344,196 qualifying drives and 30 models. This is an observation about the drives included in Backblaze’s monitored fleet and its operating practices; it is not a prediction for a specific model or another buyer’s environment. Backblaze Drive Stats for 2025

Keep time periods and measures distinct: Backblaze’s Q1 2025 article reported a 1.31% lifetime annualized failure rate as of that quarter. It is a different, earlier measure from the 2025 annual rate, so the figures should not be compared as if they were the same statistic. Backblaze Drive Stats for Q1 2025

Build a backup design that can survive more than one drive failure

Redundancy in a RAID or erasure-coded array can help keep a service available when a drive fails, but the array is not a separate backup. Keep backup copies distinct from the primary data, set retention that lets you recover earlier versions, and consider an offsite copy to address a different failure domain.

Backblaze describes a 3-2-1 arrangement that uses an external drive and online backup as an example. Backblaze sells backup and storage products, so treat its explanation as one vendor’s example rather than an independent standard. The practical point is to avoid relying on one device or one location for every recoverable copy. Backblaze explanation of the 3-2-1 backup strategy

Protect removable HDD copies from ongoing exposure

CISA recommends disconnecting removable media after a backup and physically securing it. A drive left continuously connected can remain exposed to threats affecting the system it backs up. CISA also warns that rolling backups can carry corruption or malware forward, which is why retention and earlier restore points matter. CISA StopRansomware Guide

Make recovery requirements testable

Document recovery time and recovery point needs, protect backup credentials and encryption keys, monitor backup jobs, and periodically restore data to prove the process works. A completed backup job is not evidence that the data can be recovered until a restore has been tested.

Use a purchase checklist for the final decision

  1. Size the data: total current data, growth, retention, versions or snapshots, redundancy overhead, and reserve space.
  2. Classify the workload: archive or sequential backups, random access, sustained multi-user service, or mixed use.
  3. Check the exact model: capacity, interface, sector format, recording technology, controller and enclosure support, software support, power, and cooling.
  4. Compare deployment economics: usable cost per terabyte and per supported bay, plus power, cooling, space, replacement logistics, and restore time.
  5. Plan recovery separately: identify primary data and backup copies, decide whether an offsite copy is needed, protect removable media, and set retention.
  6. Validate operations: define monitoring and replacement procedures, protect access and keys, and test a restore.

Exact street prices, current retail availability, and compatibility with a particular controller or NAS depend on the seller, region, and system. Confirm those details for the specific drive before buying.
