If you want broad exposure to the profits of large U.S. companies, start by deciding what you mean by “earnings exposure.” A conventional S&P 500 fund such as VOO or SPY owns the index’s companies in float-adjusted market-capitalization weights, so the largest companies have the greatest effect on results. RSP owns the same companies but gives each an equal weight, while RWL weights them by revenue and limits any one company to 5%.
None of those funds is an earnings-weighted S&P 500 ETF. Forward EPS growth or a price/earnings ratio shown on a fund page describes portfolio characteristics; it does not prove that the index weights companies by reported net income. If direct weighting by profits is essential, verify the benchmark methodology and prospectus for an explicit earnings rule before investing.
What “S&P 500 earnings exposure” actually means
The phrase can describe several different objectives. They overlap, but they are not interchangeable:
- Market-cap exposure: Your position follows the market value investors assign to each company. The standard S&P 500 uses float-adjusted market capitalization, so a company with a larger publicly tradable value receives a larger index weight.
- Equal-company exposure: Every constituent receives the same allocation at each rebalance, regardless of size, sales or profit.
- Revenue exposure: Companies are ranked and weighted by sales, sometimes with a cap on the largest position. Revenue is a top-line measure, before operating costs, interest and taxes.
- Net-earnings exposure: Companies are weighted by reported profits or another explicitly defined earnings measure. This is the narrowest interpretation of an “earnings-weighted” ETF.
The S&P 500 contains 500 leading companies and covers approximately 80% of available U.S. market capitalization, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices (2026). Because the index is market-cap weighted, its returns are driven disproportionately by its largest constituents. That is useful when your goal is to own the market’s established large-cap leaders, but it is not the same as allocating capital in proportion to each company’s income statement.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A fund can therefore provide substantial exposure to the earnings generated by S&P 500 companies without weighting those companies by earnings. The distinction matters when you are trying to reduce mega-cap concentration, emphasize business scale or build a portfolio around a specific accounting measure.
How the main ETF choices differ
| ETF | Weighting and benchmark | Published facts and date | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VOO | Float-adjusted market-capitalization tracking of a large-cap S&P 500 benchmark | 0.03% expense ratio reported April 28, 2026; current holdings and other characteristics can change | Conventional, low-cost S&P 500 exposure | Largest companies dominate; not earnings weighted |
| SPY | Normally invests in substantially all S&P 500 securities in approximately index proportions | 504 holdings, 21.39 forward P/E and 24.63% estimated three-to-five-year EPS growth reported September 25, 2026 | Conventional S&P 500 exposure with widely followed trading activity | Forward EPS statistics are portfolio attributes, not an earnings-weighting rule |
| RSP | S&P 500 Equal Weight Index; the same constituents as the market-cap index, reset to 0.20% each at rebalancing | SEC prospectus describes an indexing approach and generally full replication | Reducing the influence of mega-cap companies while staying in the S&P 500 universe | Equal weighting changes size and sector exposure; it is not weighting by profits |
| RWL | S&P 500 companies reweighted by revenue, with a maximum 5% position | 503 holdings and a 0.39% expense ratio reported October 2026; quarterly rebalancing in March, June, September and December | Exposure tilted toward companies with greater sales, subject to a concentration cap | Revenue is not net earnings, so the portfolio can differ materially from an earnings-weighted design |
Expense ratios, holdings, valuation measures and trading conditions are time-sensitive. Treat the figures in the table as dated snapshots, then check the fund’s current prospectus and official fund page before placing an order.
VOO and SPY: the conventional broad S&P 500 route
VOO
Vanguard describes VOO as a fund tracking a large-capitalization benchmark corresponding to the S&P 500. Its reported expense ratio was 0.03% on April 28, 2026. The fund’s weighting follows the index’s float-adjusted market-capitalization method: companies with greater publicly tradable market value receive larger positions.

That concentration is a consequence of the benchmark, not a mistake in the fund’s construction.
SPY
SPY’s SEC prospectus says it normally invests in substantially all S&P 500 securities in approximately the proportions used by the index. Its sponsor reported 504 holdings, a 21.39 forward price/earnings ratio and estimated three-to-five-year EPS growth of 24.63% on September 25, 2026.

Those statistics help describe the portfolio at that date, but they do not mean SPY assigns weights according to expected or reported earnings. A forward P/E is a valuation measure, and an EPS-growth estimate is an aggregate characteristic of the companies held. Neither changes the underlying market-cap weighting rule.
Choosing between VOO and SPY
Both are conventional S&P 500 trackers, so the decision should focus on current costs, bid-ask spreads, liquidity, tracking quality, tax treatment and whether the fund is available in your account. Do not select one solely because a page displays a higher EPS-growth figure; that number can change as prices, analyst estimates and index constituents change.

RSP: same companies, equal positions
RSP tracks the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index. Invesco states that it contains the same companies as the market-cap-weighted S&P 500, but each company receives a 0.20% weight when the index is reset. The SEC prospectus describes an indexing approach and generally full replication.
Equal weighting directly addresses one concern: a few mega-cap companies can dominate a market-cap portfolio. A smaller constituent receives the same starting allocation as the largest constituent after a rebalance, so the portfolio has greater exposure to smaller members of the S&P 500 than a conventional tracker. Sector proportions also change because sectors with more constituents receive more aggregate weight than they would under market capitalization.
RSP is not a proxy for net income. A company with low profits, high profits, high revenue or low revenue receives the same 0.20% starting weight as every other constituent. Prices then move those weights away from 0.20% until the next rebalance. If your objective is specifically to allocate according to reported earnings, equal weighting solves a concentration problem but not the accounting-definition problem.

RWL: revenue weighting and a 5% cap
RWL uses a different definition of company scale. Invesco says its rules-based index reweights S&P 500 securities according to revenue earned by the companies and limits any one company to a maximum 5% weighting. S&P Dow Jones Indices lists 503 constituents and quarterly rebalancing in March, June, September and December. Invesco reported 503 holdings and a 0.39% expense ratio in October 2026.

It can also increase the influence of businesses with high sales but thinner margins. A retailer, distributor or manufacturer may report enormous revenue while retaining far less net income than a software or payments company with a higher margin. Consequently, RWL can have very different sector, profitability and valuation characteristics from both a market-cap fund and an equal-weight fund.
The 5% ceiling is an additional design choice. Even if one company has the greatest revenue, the methodology prevents it from exceeding the cap at the relevant rebalance. Quarterly resets mean weights can move as prices and reported sales change; the published schedule is not a promise that every holding remains at a fixed percentage throughout the quarter.
Is there an earnings-weighted S&P 500 ETF?
No directly earnings-weighted S&P 500 ETF was verified among the choices considered here. Do not relabel VOO, SPY, RSP or RWL as earnings weighted:
- VOO and SPY use market-capitalization proportions.
- RSP uses equal weights.
- RWL uses revenue weights with a 5% cap.
To verify a candidate that claims to emphasize earnings, read the index methodology and the fund prospectus rather than relying on a marketing phrase or a performance statistic. Look for all of the following:

- An explicit earnings variable. The methodology should define whether it uses net income, operating income, earnings before interest and taxes, trailing earnings, forecast earnings or another measure.
- A stated weighting formula. Confirm how the earnings figure is converted into portfolio weights, how negative or zero earnings are handled and whether a cap or floor applies.
- A rebalancing schedule. Earnings data are reported at different times. The document should say when observations are collected and when weights are reset.
- Constituent and eligibility rules. Check whether the universe is all S&P 500 companies, a subset with positive earnings or another population.
- Prospectus consistency. The ETF’s statutory documents should describe the same benchmark and method as the index provider’s materials.
A forward P/E, an estimated EPS-growth percentage or a high aggregate profitability statistic can be useful for evaluating a portfolio, but none establishes earnings-based weighting. If the fund documents do not explicitly provide the rule, treat the ETF as not verified for this purpose.
Match the ETF to your actual objective
| Your priority | Most direct candidate | Why | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Own the S&P 500 in its standard form | VOO or SPY | Both follow market-capitalization proportions and therefore represent the index’s aggregate large-cap earnings base | Current expense ratio, spread, liquidity, tracking difference and account availability |
| Reduce mega-cap influence without leaving the S&P 500 | RSP | Every constituent starts at the same 0.20% weight at rebalance | Sector and size shifts, turnover, costs and how the rebalance affects your tax situation |
| Weight by business scale measured as sales | RWL | Revenue weighting with a 5% maximum position | Margin differences, sector tilts, quarterly rebalance dates and the 0.39% dated expense figure |
| Weight directly by reported profits | No verified choice in this set | The listed funds use market cap, equal weight or revenue rather than net earnings | Find an ETF whose benchmark methodology explicitly defines earnings weighting |
A practical selection process
- Write down the exposure you want. Decide whether “earnings” means owning the biggest companies, owning every constituent equally, emphasizing sales or allocating by reported profits. If you cannot state the measure, you cannot evaluate whether a fund delivers it.
- Read the benchmark rule. Identify the weighting variable, float adjustment, constituent universe, caps and rebalance schedule. The fund name alone is not enough.
- Measure concentration. Review the largest positions and sector weights on the current official page. Market-cap funds will normally place more influence in the largest companies; equal and revenue weighting change that pattern in different ways.
- Separate valuation statistics from construction. Record forward P/E and EPS-growth figures as dated portfolio characteristics. Do not use them as evidence of earnings weighting.
- Compare recurring costs. Check the current expense ratio and the fund’s historical tracking difference. A small fee advantage matters only if the fund tracks its benchmark well and is practical to trade in your account.
- Check trading mechanics. ETFs trade intraday through a brokerage account. Compare the bid-ask spread, normal trading volume, order execution and any brokerage restrictions. A limit order can help you control the maximum purchase price when the spread is wide or markets are moving.
- Consider taxes and turnover. Rebalancing can create transactions inside the fund, while your own sale can create a taxable gain in a taxable account. Review the prospectus and your local tax rules rather than assuming every index strategy has the same tax outcome.
- Record the date. Write down the expense ratio, holdings, valuation measures and methodology version you used. These values change, so an old screenshot should not be treated as current evidence.
- Review on a schedule, not after every headline. Recheck the benchmark, fees, concentration and tracking results at least when the fund publishes a material methodology or prospectus change.
Costs and implementation details that can change the result
The expense ratio is only one cost. Your realized outcome also reflects the bid-ask spread, brokerage commissions if any, the price at which your order fills, taxes and the difference between the ETF and its benchmark. The quoted VOO and RWL expense ratios are dated observations, not permanent prices. SPY’s holdings and valuation statistics are likewise dated snapshots.
Because ETFs trade during market hours, an order can execute at a price that differs from the last displayed quote. A market order prioritizes execution but not price. A limit order sets a maximum purchase price for a buy order, although it may not fill. Avoid placing an order when the spread is unusually wide unless you understand the trade-off.
Account availability matters as well. Confirm that your brokerage offers the ETF, supports fractional shares if you need them, and reports the tax documents you require. These operational details can outweigh a small difference in headline expense ratios.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling a revenue fund earnings weighted
Revenue is sales, not profit. High-revenue companies can have low margins, heavy debt costs or large one-time expenses. Read RWL as a revenue-weighted strategy with a 5% cap, not as a net-earnings strategy.

Assuming an EPS statistic proves the index method
SPY’s published forward P/E and estimated EPS-growth figures describe the companies held at a particular date. They do not alter SPY’s market-capitalization weighting. Check the benchmark rule instead.
Expecting equal weight to behave like the market-cap index
RSP owns the same names, but equal starting weights increase the influence of smaller constituents and alter sector exposure. Its performance can therefore diverge substantially from a conventional S&P 500 tracker even though the company list overlaps.
Treating “500 companies” as exactly 500 securities in every fund
Share classes, corporate actions and fund implementation can produce a holdings count such as SPY’s reported 504. Compare the benchmark constituents and the ETF’s current holdings list rather than rejecting a fund because the number is not exactly 500.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUsing an old fee or holdings figure
Expense ratios, holdings, valuation measures and brokerage availability are volatile. Date every comparison and revisit the official documents before trading.
Choosing only by the lowest fee
A low expense ratio does not answer whether the weighting rule, concentration, liquidity or tax characteristics fit your objective. Start with the exposure definition, then use cost and implementation as tie-breakers.
How to think about combinations
You can hold more than one S&P 500 strategy, but combining them does not create a pure earnings-weighted portfolio. A market-cap fund blended with RSP still mixes market-cap and equal weights; adding RWL adds a revenue tilt. Before combining funds, calculate the resulting exposure to the largest companies and sectors, and account for duplicated holdings and additional trading costs.
If your goal is a single, understandable core position, one methodology may be easier to monitor. If you intentionally want to balance concentration and sales-scale effects, document the target percentages and the reason for each sleeve. Do not assume that owning several labels automatically produces diversification when the underlying companies are largely the same.
Bottom line
Choose VOO or SPY for conventional, broad S&P 500 exposure in market-capitalization proportions. Choose RSP when your main concern is mega-cap concentration and you accept equal-weight size and sector effects. Choose RWL only when revenue is the business-scale proxy you actually want, including its 5% cap and quarterly rebalancing. None is an earnings-weighted S&P 500 ETF based on the verified methodologies here. For direct profit weighting, require an explicit earnings formula in the benchmark methodology and prospectus before investing.
