The sound way to choose an AI or technology ETF in a volatile market is to choose the exposure first and the fund second. Decide whether you need broad technology, AI infrastructure and chips, AI software and services, or a mixed AI-stack portfolio. Then compare the fund’s index or active process, concentration, overlap with what you already own, expense ratio, trading spread, liquidity, geography and stated risks.
A fund with dozens of tickers is not automatically diversified. Chip designers, cloud platforms, data-center suppliers and software companies can all depend on the same AI capital-spending cycle. Volatility can also make an ETF expensive to trade: bid-ask spreads may widen, and the market price can temporarily move away from net asset value. The latest prospectus, methodology, holdings file and spread data matter more than the fund’s name.
Start with the exposure, not the ticker
“AI” is a value chain rather than a single industry. A useful framework divides it into infrastructure, intelligence, and applications and services. Infrastructure includes semiconductors, networking, servers, cooling, data centers and cloud capacity. Intelligence includes models, data, machine-learning platforms and development tools. Applications and services include software, automation and products that use those capabilities.

| Exposure you want | Typical holdings and drivers | What can go wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Broad technology | Hardware, software, internet, payments and technology services across several subsectors | Less pure AI exposure; still sensitive to growth stocks, rates and valuation |
| AI infrastructure and chips | Semiconductor designers and manufacturers, networking, memory, equipment, cloud and data-center suppliers | Highly cyclical demand, export controls, supply constraints and a shared AI-capital-spending cycle |
| AI software and services | Model developers, enterprise software, analytics, automation and AI-enabled services | Rapid obsolescence, uncertain adoption, regulation and concentration in a few large platforms |
| Mixed AI-stack portfolio | A combination of infrastructure, intelligence, applications and services | May still be concentrated in the same large companies and can dilute a specific view |
Write the desired job in one sentence, such as “I want diversified global AI-infrastructure exposure” or “I want a small satellite position in AI software.” If you cannot write that sentence, a narrow thematic fund may simply duplicate holdings you already own.
Step 1: Decide whether the ETF is core or satellite
A core holding is intended to provide much of your long-term equity exposure. A satellite holding expresses a narrower view around it. Broad technology funds are easier to use as a substantial allocation because they spread exposure across more businesses and subsectors. A thematic AI fund is usually better evaluated as a satellite unless your portfolio and risk capacity support a concentrated theme.
Check your existing individual shares, workplace retirement funds and broad-market ETFs before adding another fund. A technology ETF can already contain the same hyperscalers, chip companies or software firms that dominate an AI ETF. The new purchase may increase exposure without adding a new source of return.
Step 2: Understand how each candidate is built
Read the prospectus and index methodology rather than relying on a marketing label. Determine whether the fund is active or index-tracking, how companies qualify, how positions are capped, and how often the portfolio is rebalanced.
| Fund or approach | Construction described by the issuer | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| BAI | An active approach seeking exposure across AI infrastructure, intelligence, and applications and services | How does the manager change weights? What are the current top holdings, turnover and tracking results? |
| AIQ | Seeks results corresponding generally to the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index, before fees and expenses | What screens and country rules does the index use? How often does it rebalance and what tracking difference has occurred? |
| ARTY | A future-AI index whose eligible universe covers generative AI, AI data and infrastructure, AI software and AI services, with market-cap and trading-volume screens | What companies pass the eligibility screens, and how do the screens affect concentration and turnover? |
| IGPT | Focused on AI and next-generation software | How much of the portfolio is software versus semiconductors, and how sensitive is it to a narrow industry cycle? |
These descriptions are not interchangeable. An active manager can move across the AI stack, while an index fund follows published inclusion and weighting rules. A screen based on revenue, patents, products or business descriptions can produce very different holdings even when the fund names sound alike.
Step 3: Measure concentration and overlap
Open the latest holdings file and record the top 10 positions, largest single position, sector weights and country weights. Then compare those lists with every ETF and stock you already own. Concentration is more important than the number of line items: 40 companies can still be driven by five large positions or by one shared business cycle.
The BAI prospectus specifically warns that concentration in AI and technology companies can make results more dependent on a particular market segment and increase risk compared with broader diversification. Its warning is relevant to any thematic fund, not only one ticker.

- Single-stock concentration: Check the percentage in the largest holding and whether a position cap applies.
- Top-10 concentration: Add the ten largest weights; a high total means a few companies will dominate performance.
- Economic concentration: Group holdings by their real driver, such as data-center spending, semiconductor demand, cloud budgets or enterprise software adoption.
- Portfolio overlap: Mark companies appearing in multiple funds. Different labels can conceal the same exposure to a hyperscaler, chip designer or networking supplier.
- Geographic concentration: Note the share in the United States, Taiwan, South Korea, Europe and other markets, including where companies earn revenue rather than only where they are listed.
Step 4: Evaluate trading costs when markets are stressed
An ETF has two prices: its net asset value, calculated from the underlying portfolio, and the exchange price at which you trade. They normally stay close, but the gap can widen when markets are moving quickly or when underlying securities are difficult to price.
The BAI prospectus says bid-ask spreads vary with trading volume and liquidity and may widen during increased market volatility. Frequent trading can detract from results. A fund that looks cheap on its expense ratio can still be costly to enter or exit if its spread is wide.
What to inspect
- Median or typical bid-ask spread at the time you plan to trade, not only the best historical figure.
- Average daily volume and the fund’s assets, while remembering that volume alone does not guarantee a tight spread.
- Liquidity of the underlying holdings, especially for smaller international companies.
- Whether the quoted price is close to indicative net asset value during the session.
Use a limit order that states the maximum price you will pay or the minimum price you will accept. Avoid assuming that a market order will fill at the last displayed price during a sharp move. For a large transaction, consider splitting the order and checking the spread at different times rather than trading immediately after a major announcement.
Step 5: Compare fees and implementation quality
The expense ratio is deducted from fund assets and compounds over time. The BAI fact sheet reports a 0.65% expense ratio from BlackRock/iShares for 2026. Treat that as a dated published figure, not a permanent price; verify the current fact sheet before investing.
Do not compare expense ratios in isolation. Record the following for each candidate:
- Expense ratio and any temporary fee waiver or contractual expiration date.
- Index-rebalancing schedule, turnover and the rules used when a company enters or leaves.
- Replication method: physical holdings, sampling, derivatives or a combination.
- Tracking difference between the fund and its benchmark after expenses.
- Securities-lending policy and how lending revenue is handled.
- Fund age, assets and closure or merger history, where available.
An index fund can lag its benchmark by more than the stated expense ratio because of trading costs, withholding taxes, cash drag and rebalancing effects. An active fund may have a higher fee but a different implementation process. Compare the result you receive after all frictions, not one headline number.
Step 6: Stress-test the investment thesis
Before buying, write down what would disprove your reason for owning the fund. For an infrastructure fund, ask what happens if AI data-center spending slows, chip inventories rise or export restrictions limit sales. For software, ask what happens if customers delay adoption, open models pressure pricing or a new technology makes an existing product less useful.

Relevant stress scenarios include:
- Lower AI capital expenditure by cloud and enterprise customers.
- Weaker semiconductor demand, excess inventory or a supply-chain interruption.
- Higher interest rates that reduce the value investors assign to long-duration growth companies.
- A recession that cuts technology budgets and advertising or transaction volumes.
- Regulation covering data use, model safety, privacy, competition or export controls.
- Technological progress that makes a current architecture or product obsolete.
- A valuation reset after expectations move faster than earnings.
Invesco warns that focused exposure to software and semiconductors is more affected by market volatility than diversified investments. Its product discussion also identifies business-cycle changes, technological progress, obsolescence and regulation as risks for AI-software exposure.

Step 7: Treat international exposure as a separate decision
Global AI strategies can add companies and supply-chain exposure outside the United States, but international diversification introduces risks of its own. Currency movements can change your return even when a foreign share price is unchanged in its local market. Foreign markets may have lower liquidity, different accounting or disclosure standards, political risk, capital controls and different rules for investors.
The iShares fact sheet warns that international investing can involve currency, limited-liquidity, regulatory and substantial-volatility risks. It also states that diversification does not guarantee protection against market risk or loss of principal. Decide whether you want those exposures rather than accepting them accidentally through a global methodology.
Broad technology, semiconductor or thematic AI ETF?
| Choose this type when… | Main benefit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Broad technology | You want diversified participation across technology subsectors and a potentially stronger core role | AI may be only one contributor, and large established companies can dominate |
| Semiconductor or infrastructure | Your thesis is that computing capacity, networking or chip demand will lead the cycle | Greater cyclicality, supply-chain sensitivity and dependence on capital spending |
| Thematic AI software | You want targeted exposure to applications, models and services | Adoption, competition, regulation and obsolescence can change quickly; concentration may be high |
| Mixed AI-stack | You want one vehicle spanning infrastructure, intelligence and applications | The fund can still overlap heavily with broad technology holdings and may dilute a specific view |
There is no universally best category. Match the category to the job you wrote, then check whether its actual holdings deliver that job. If your existing portfolio is already dominated by large technology companies, adding another AI-labelled fund may increase concentration rather than diversify it.
A practical comparison worksheet
Use one row per ETF and fill it from the latest issuer documents and trading screen. “Not stated” is preferable to guessing when a document does not provide a figure.
| Field | What to record | Why it matters in volatility |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure definition | Infrastructure, intelligence, software, services or broad technology | Reveals the economic driver you are actually buying |
| Management | Active or index; benchmark name and methodology | Shows how weights can change and what discretion exists |
| Concentration | Largest holding, top 10, sector and country weights | Indicates how many independent sources of risk you have |
| Overlap | Repeated companies across your portfolio | Prevents accidental duplication |
| Cost | Expense ratio, spread, turnover and tracking difference | Captures both ongoing and trading friction |
| Liquidity | Fund volume, assets and liquidity of underlying securities | Helps estimate execution quality under stress |
| Rules | Rebalance dates, position caps and eligibility screens | Shows how the portfolio may change without a manager decision |
| Risks | Rates, regulation, technology, supply chain, currency and political exposure | Provides scenarios for when the thesis could fail |
How to buy during a volatile session
- Confirm the vehicle: Read the latest prospectus, fact sheet, index methodology and holdings file. Check the document dates.
- Check the live market: Observe the bid, ask, spread and indicative value. Do not rely only on the previous close.
- Set an order limit: Enter a limit order with a price you are willing to accept. A market order guarantees execution, not a particular price.
- Size the trade: Keep the position consistent with your risk capacity and the concentration already present elsewhere.
- Review the fill: Confirm the execution price, fees and number of shares. A partial fill may leave the intended allocation incomplete.
- Record the rationale: Save the thesis, expected holding period and conditions that would make you reassess. This reduces impulsive trading when prices move.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Choosing by name alone
Problem: “AI” can describe a fund dominated by chips, software, cloud platforms or a mixture.
Fix: Read the methodology and holdings, then classify the actual economic exposure.

Counting tickers instead of risks
Problem: Many holdings may share one capital-spending or semiconductor cycle.

Fix: Treat geography as an explicit allocation decision and understand the fund’s currency exposure.
Trading too frequently
Problem: Repeated entries and exits add spreads, taxes and timing risk.
Fix: Set a review schedule and trade only when the portfolio job or thesis has changed.
Monitor the ETF after purchase
Review the fund at a defined interval rather than reacting to every price move. Recheck holdings, top-10 concentration, sector and country weights, fees, methodology changes, assets, spreads and tracking difference. Compare the portfolio with the job you originally assigned it.
Reassess sooner if the issuer changes the index, investment objective, position caps or fee; if a merger or closure is announced; if your existing holdings change materially; or if the reason for owning the theme no longer applies. A falling price alone is not proof that the fund has failed, just as a rising price is not proof that the thesis is sound.
What the right choice depends on
No single ETF suits every investor. The decision depends on time horizon, ability to tolerate losses, existing holdings, tax jurisdiction, base currency and whether the position is intended to be core or satellite. Current holdings, assets, spreads and expense ratios can change, so verify the latest issuer fact sheet and regulatory filing before placing an order.
