There is no defensible one-size-fits-all EC2 instance recommendation for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live playlist. The right choice depends on the playlist’s codec and processing needs, whether the instance’s GPU and software can use a hardware encoder, and whether the instance can sustain enough outbound bandwidth. Start with YouTube’s live-ingest settings, shortlist compatible GPU instances, then test the complete workflow before relying on it.
Set YouTube’s 4K60 live-encoder targets first
Use YouTube’s live encoder recommendations, not its separate upload recommendations. The current English-language live encoder table lists these bitrate settings for 2160p at 60 fps:

These are YouTube’s platform settings, not measurements of EC2 capacity. The minimum rates are not the recommended targets. Confirm that the encoder you choose supports the codec as well as the required 4K resolution and 60 fps output.
Use the live protocol and timing settings
- Choose RTMPS where your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Set a constant bitrate (CBR) and 60 fps.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Plan for normal latency: YouTube says its low-latency improvement is unavailable for 4K streams.
Shortlist EC2 instances by encoder capability, not GPU label alone
A GPU instance is a plausible starting point for a hardware-encoding design, but the instance family name does not guarantee that your chosen operating system, driver, and encoding software can use the encoder. AWS’s EC2 NVIDIA driver documentation lists NVENC for video encoding and NVDEC for video decoding among supported APIs, and includes G4dn and G5 in its driver options. NVIDIA explains that NVENC is a hardware-based video encoder separate from the graphics and CUDA cores.

Before selecting a size, verify the exact instance type, regional availability, operating system, installed driver, and encoder implementation. Confirm it can use the desired hardware codec and apply YouTube’s output settings. A GPU-family capability establishes a possibility, not real-time performance for your playlist.
Account for the entire playlist pipeline
A file-based stream may involve reading and decoding the source, scaling or filtering it, handling audio, and encoding the outgoing stream. The demands change with the playlist’s source codec, frame rate, resolution, filters, and software. If the files already match the required output, the processing chain may differ from one that must scale or transcode them. Do not infer the minimum instance size from the GPU family alone.

Check vCPU and memory alongside the GPU. Also compare the instance’s documented EBS throughput with what the workflow needs; AWS advises choosing EBS throughput above application requirements to avoid a storage bottleneck.
Check sustained outbound network capacity
Compare the selected instance size’s published network performance with the configured stream bitrate. AWS’s accelerated computing instance specifications provide network bandwidth by size. A 50 Mbps video stream needs at least that nominal video payload rate outbound, before headroom for operational variation or other traffic. Published “up to” bandwidth is not a promise of sustained throughput to YouTube.

Assess the actual route from the chosen region to YouTube’s ingest and test under the same workload you intend to run. Watch for dropped frames and YouTube stream-health warnings; an instance’s published bandwidth figure alone cannot establish that the complete path is stable.
Choose a candidate with a workload test
- Identify the workload. Record each playlist file’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio format. Note whether your software will decode, scale, filter, or re-encode it, and whether the stream needs to run continuously.
- Choose an output codec and bitrate. Use YouTube’s live settings above as the target, then check that the selected encoder supports the combination of codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, and keyframe interval.
- Check driver and instance compatibility. For a GPU-based option, verify the exact EC2 type, region, operating system, NVIDIA driver, and software path to NVENC or NVDEC as applicable.
- Compare published resources. For each candidate size, check network bandwidth, EBS throughput, vCPU, and memory against the playlist and processing chain. Include operational headroom rather than treating the stream bitrate as the whole workload.
- Run an end-to-end test. Test the exact playlist, software, settings, and intended region. YouTube advises testing with similar audio and movement. Check output frame rate, dropped frames, encoder behavior, and YouTube stream health.
- Validate the intended runtime. If the stream must run for long periods, test for a comparable duration and observe resource use and stream health. A short successful test does not establish long-run stability.
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” It also says: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Follow that guidance during both the test and any live run.

Do not assume an exact instance size or cost
The appropriate size, regional availability, and total cost depend on the source files, encoding and playlist software, region, and runtime. AWS’s published specifications and driver documentation do not establish which instance handles this particular workload, nor do they establish an exact current price or guaranteed stream uptime. Compare current EC2 and storage charges for the selected region and expected run time, then base the final choice on a test of the complete pipeline.
