For a standard stereo YouTube radio stream sent over RTMP or RTMPS, AAC is the simplest default: YouTube lists it as supported and recommends 44.1 kHz audio at 128 Kbps. MP3 is also supported on that route. First confirm which ingestion protocol your encoder uses, because YouTube’s HLS guidance lists a different set of supported codecs.
How to choose an audio codec for a 24/7 YouTube radio stream
Choose the codec for the signal your encoder sends to YouTube—not based on an assumption that every viewer will receive that same codec. For conventional stereo radio over RTMP or RTMPS, AAC at YouTube’s recommended 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps is a practical starting configuration. YouTube also lists MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, but its guidance does not establish that one sounds better than the other.
Check whether your encoder uses RTMP/RTMPS or HLS
Codec support depends on the ingestion route. Check the protocol selected in your encoder or streaming service before applying YouTube’s audio settings.
| Ingestion route | Codecs YouTube lists | Stereo guidance | 5.1 guidance | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps | 5.1 is supported only with AAC; 48 kHz, 384 Kbps | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance also recommends CBR for stream encoding mode; CBR is not a codec. |
| HLS | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 | 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps | 48 kHz, 384 Kbps | HLS sends segments and has higher latency than RTMP. Use it when your workflow calls for HLS, rather than switching protocols only to access another codec. |
These are YouTube’s documented live-ingestion settings, not universal audio-engineering rules. The RTMP/RTMPS values and codec list are in YouTube Help’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; HLS support and latency details are in Set up an HLS stream.

AAC or MP3 for YouTube Live stereo audio?
Both are listed for RTMP/RTMPS, so either can be used if your encoder supports it and is configured correctly. AAC is a sensible default because it is the first option in YouTube’s guidance and fits the documented stereo recommendation of 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. That is a compatibility and configuration choice, not a claim that AAC wins a listening test.
The official pages do not compare perceived sound quality among AAC, MP3, AC3, and EAC3 at a given bitrate, nor do they report codec-specific reliability for continuous radio. Sound depends on factors such as the source audio, bitrate, encoder implementation, and listening conditions; the cited guidance does not establish a universal quality ranking.

Keep stereo and 5.1 settings separate
For a stereo radio stream, use the stereo recommendation rather than copying surround settings. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance says 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC and specifies 48 kHz at 384 Kbps. Its HLS guide specifies 48 kHz at 384 Kbps for 5.1. Apply those values only when the stream is actually configured for 5.1 audio.
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers
The codec you send is an ingestion setting; it does not guarantee the codec every listener receives. YouTube Help says it automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Configure a supported input and judge the result by the stream health and playback you observe, not by assuming the input codec is the audience’s playback codec.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Test and monitor a continuous radio stream
YouTube recommends testing before a live stream with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. For a 24/7 station, check that your actual audio path remains stable over time; YouTube’s published advice does not prescribe a specific test duration.
- Match the test to the real workflow. Use the same encoder, ingestion protocol, audio source, codec, sample rate, and bitrate you intend to run.
- Verify the stereo or surround configuration. For stereo, check the documented 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps recommendation. Do not use 5.1 settings unless your stream is genuinely surround.
- Check YouTube’s stream health before relying on it. Resolve any warnings or errors shown for the incoming stream, then listen to playback and confirm the audio behaves as expected.
- Keep monitoring after launch. Review stream health and messages during operation, and investigate sustained instability rather than treating a successful initial connection as proof of continuous reliability.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube radio stream that continues without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
