Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose an API tool by starting with the work you need it to do: send and debug requests, design and document an API, collaborate on API work, or automate repeatable checks. Then verify that it supports your protocols and formats, fits your team’s version-control and CI workflow, meets security and access requirements, and costs what your project can sustain. No single tool is the right choice for every project.
Decide what job the tool needs to do
“API tool” can mean several kinds of software. Some products overlap, but a request client, an API design platform, a documentation tool, and an automated test framework are not interchangeable. Write down the project’s primary outcome before comparing vendors.
- Send and debug requests: You need a client for making calls, inspecting responses, and managing authentication or environments.
- Design and document an API: You need to create or maintain a contract and documentation, including support for the specification formats your project uses.
- Share and govern API work: You need shared projects or resources, review and versioning practices, and possibly roles or single sign-on (SSO).
- Automate checks: You need to run repeatable requests or tests locally, through a runner, or in continuous integration (CI).
If the project needs several of these, assess how well the tool connects those workflows rather than assuming one feature list covers them all.
Check compatibility with your API and workflow
Use the protocols, description formats, authentication methods, and environments your project actually depends on. Postman’s API Client page describes support for HTTP, GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket, and MQTT, alongside request building, response inspection, collections, environments, and scriptable workflows. Confirm the live feature list against your own requests and required formats: Postman API Client.

Also check how the tool handles the parts of the workflow that often cause friction:
- Can you import and export the API definitions, requests, and other project data you need?
- Can the team keep work in Git or otherwise review and track changes in its chosen workflow?
- Can authentication credentials and environment-specific values be handled in a way that meets the project’s security rules?
- Can the checks run in the required place, whether that is a developer machine, a tool-provided runner, or CI?
Postman’s platform-selection checklist calls out design formats, REST-client and debugging needs, monitoring, SSO, provisioning, and change tracking as items to evaluate: Postman’s API-first platform checklist. Treat these as questions for your project, not as proof that any one product meets every requirement.

Compare the shortlisted tools against your requirements
The vendors below describe different capabilities on their official pages. These descriptions can help build a shortlist, but they do not establish comparative speed, reliability, security performance, or feature parity.
| Tool | What its cited official page describes | When it may merit a closer look | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postman | Request building, response inspection, collections and environments, scriptable workflows, and support for HTTP, GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket, and MQTT, according to its API Client page. | When you want a broad API client and platform workflow. | Whether the protocols, formats, integrations, governance features, and plan terms fit your project. Its pricing page lists a free plan and paid individual, team, and enterprise options; check current plan contents and limits. |
| Bruno | Its pricing page lists an open-source tier and paid Pro and Ultimate plans. | When the current product and pricing align with how your team wants to work. | Test the specific capabilities, integrations, and workflow fit you need. The cited information does not establish independent feature parity or benchmark results. |
| Kong Insomnia | Its collaboration page describes sharing projects and API resources, organizations, role-based access controls (RBAC), and enterprise SSO. | When shared work or access governance is a key requirement. | Confirm which collaboration and governance features are included in the plan you would use. Check its pricing page for current plan information. |
For all three, confirm current pricing, feature gates, usage limits, and any account or cloud requirements directly with the vendor before deciding. Plan details can change, and the cited vendor pages are not independent product evaluations.

Evaluate collaboration, security, and operating cost
A tool that works for one developer may not suit a team that needs controlled access, shared project data, or a repeatable review process. Establish who will maintain the API work, who needs access, and whether the project requires roles, SSO, provisioning, or change tracking. For security and data handling, check the vendor’s current terms and product settings against your organization’s requirements; the feature descriptions cited here do not establish comparative security performance.
Compare total cost, not just the entry tier. Account for per-user charges, plan limits, paid add-ons or usage-based fees, and the practical cost of migration and maintenance. Postman lists free and paid plan categories, Bruno lists open-source and paid tiers, and Insomnia publishes plan information, but the exact terms should be checked on their live pages before purchase.

Run a representative trial before committing
A short evaluation using real project work is more informative than choosing from feature lists alone. Include the developers and maintainers who will use the tool, and test the following:
- Use a representative request. Make a real project call with its authentication method, headers, and expected response. Confirm that the tool supports the protocol and request details you need.
- Use the project’s environments. Try the values and environment changes the team relies on, while checking that sensitive credentials are handled according to policy.
- Exercise the full workflow. Share or review work, export or version it as intended, and run a repeatable check in the place the project requires, including CI if applicable.
- Check team and plan fit. Confirm that the people who need access can work with the tool and that required collaboration, governance, and automation features are available on the plan under consideration.
- Assess maintenance and exit options. Have the intended maintainers work with the project data, then verify that the import, export, and versioning approach supports the team’s longer-term workflow.
Do not choose by popularity claims alone
Postman’s 2022 State of the API Report says 89% of respondents to its question about API tools and platforms mentioned Postman. That is a Postman-published, self-reported result from that report’s respondent sample—not general market share or evidence that Postman is best for a particular project: 2022 State of the API Report.
