Choose an office air purifier by matching its smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) to the area it must serve, then check that its filters target the pollutants you care about. Before buying, also compare noise at a workable fan speed, replacement-filter cost and availability, energy use, and safe placement.
What size air purifier do you need for your office?
Measure the floor area the unit will serve, then compare it with the purifier’s smoke CADR and stated room coverage. CADR indicates how quickly a cleaner delivers filtered air for particles; it is not a guarantee of the air changes your particular office will achieve.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s illustrative minimum CADR estimates below assume an 8-foot ceiling. They are a starting point, not a promise of performance in every room.

These EPA figures come from its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home (2018). For ceilings higher than 8 feet, EPA advises choosing a larger-rated cleaner. In an open-plan office, size for the entire area you expect the unit to serve—not just the immediate desk area. If one cleaner cannot cover the space, consider more than one.

For small particles, compare smoke CADR: in the rating system EPA describes, smoke represents smaller particles than the dust and pollen categories. CADR is typically measured at the highest fan speed, so check the rating alongside noise at the speed staff can tolerate during work. A high maximum rating is less useful if the unit is routinely turned down or switched off. EPA notes that higher fan speeds and longer operating times generally increase filtered airflow.
For wildfire-smoke planning, EPA gives separate guidance: choose a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. This is specific cleaner-air-room guidance, not a replacement for the general sizing estimates above. See EPA’s wildfire and indoor-air-quality guidance.

Choose filters for the pollutants you want to address
Decide whether the office concern is airborne particles, gases or odors, or both. A high-efficiency particle filter, such as HEPA media, can capture particles, but the filter label alone does not establish that a unit is appropriately sized for the room; compare its CADR and filter specifications.
For gases or odors, look for activated carbon or another absorbent filter specifically designed for gases. CADR measures particle-cleaning performance, not gas removal. EPA notes that there is no widely used performance rating system for portable gas-removal filters, and that carbon can be effective when a substantial amount of media is present. A product’s mention of carbon by itself does not establish how well it will address an odor or gas.

No air cleaner or filter removes every indoor pollutant. Treat claims about a specific target separately: particle performance does not prove gas removal, and a gas-adsorbing filter does not prove particle-cleaning capacity.
Check safety information and certifications
Avoid ozone generators for occupied office spaces. EPA says, “Available scientific evidence shows that at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone has little potential to remove indoor air contaminants.” Ozone-producing technologies also raise emissions concerns, so check relevant product emissions information and applicable independent lists, such as those from CARB or AHAM.

ENERGY STAR certification can help compare energy efficiency, but it is not a blanket claim of zero ozone or a guarantee of health outcomes. ENERGY STAR’s room-air-cleaner criteria include measured ozone reporting and specify a limit for models subject to the referenced UL requirements. Its current room-air-cleaner specification took effect October 9, 2025. The program evaluates efficiency using Integrated Energy Factor, a CADR-to-watt measure, and says the label does not mean EPA endorses manufacturer claims about how much healthier a particular model will make indoor air.
Compare the costs and practical fit
- Noise: Compare sound levels at the fan speed likely to be used during working hours, not only the maximum CADR setting. If a cleaner is too disruptive, users may reduce its speed or turn it off.
- Replacement filters: Confirm the exact compatible replacement-filter model, its price, and whether it is available. Include recurring filter purchases in the ownership cost; all filters require replacement.
- Energy: Use efficiency information, including ENERGY STAR’s Integrated Energy Factor where available, to compare CADR delivered per watt.
- Footprint and placement: Check the unit’s dimensions and follow its manual’s airflow clearances. ENERGY STAR advises keeping air cleaners away from curtains and other obstructions.
- Coverage claims: Compare the manufacturer’s room-size claim with the smoke CADR, measured office area, ceiling height, and open-plan layout.
When should you consider the office HVAC system instead?
A portable purifier serves a room or area; central HVAC filtration is a separate building-system decision. HVAC filters work when the central system runs. EPA recommends MERV 13 or the highest rating the system fan and filter slot can accommodate, but a higher-rated filter is appropriate only if the system can handle it. Ask facilities staff or an HVAC professional to check compatibility before changing the filter. A portable cleaner does not replace ventilation or an assessment of building filtration.

A practical buying checklist
- Measure the office area the cleaner must serve, including the full open-plan area if applicable.
- Use smoke CADR to compare particle-cleaning capacity with room size; account for ceilings above 8 feet.
- Identify whether the priority is particles, gases or odors, or both, and verify the relevant filter media separately.
- Check operating noise at a realistic workday setting, plus energy use and the unit’s placement requirements.
- Verify the compatible replacement filter and its price and availability before choosing a model.
- Review ozone and emissions information; avoid ozone generators in occupied spaces.
- If considering HVAC filtration, have facilities staff or an HVAC professional confirm the system can accommodate the proposed MERV rating.
