Before choosing an AI journaling app, find out where your entries live, what leaves your device when you use AI, who processes that material, and how deletion and export work. “Encrypted” alone does not answer those questions: a journal may be encrypted in storage while selected text is decrypted temporarily so an AI feature can process it.
Start with the privacy boundary around AI
Separate two things: the app’s ordinary journal storage and the specific AI request. A service might encrypt stored entries but still need to make selected text readable to an AI system while generating a summary, reflection, or response. Check whether AI is optional, whether you choose which entries to include, and whether audio or transcripts follow a different route.
Use AI only with writing you are comfortable sending through the app’s disclosed processing path. Keep especially sensitive entries out of AI features when the app allows that choice. If you do not want a service to process a particular entry at all, a paper journal is a straightforward alternative.
Use this checklist before you commit
- Locate the original journal. Does it stay on your device, or is an account and cloud sync required? Can you use the app without signing in?
- Clarify encryption and keys. Ask what is encrypted at rest and in transit, whether encryption is end-to-end, and who can access or recover the keys. Find out whether the protection changes when AI is invoked.
- Trace each AI feature. Determine what text, images, audio, or transcripts are sent; whether you select the material; which company or model provider receives it; and whether processing happens on-device or on a server.
- Check training and retention terms. Look for separate answers about model training, request retention, logs, and temporary processing. Do not assume that “not used for training” means “not processed” or “not retained.”
- Read deletion rules by data type. Check what happens to entries, attachments, account information, synced devices, recovery copies, and backups—and whether there is a waiting or recovery period.
- Test portability before building an archive. Find the export formats, whether attachments and dates are included, and whether the exported files remain readable without the app. Create a small test export if possible.
- Check practical fit. Confirm supported platforms, sync behavior, account requirements, and whether privacy choices are easy to make for individual entries rather than buried in settings.
What one app’s published disclosures illustrate
Day One: local use, with a distinct AI-processing route
Day One says that users who do not create an account store entries locally on their device; its FAQ compares this setup to a physical notebook. It also says journal data can be backed up to an account after signing in. These are the company’s descriptions, not an independent security assessment. Day One FAQ

Day One says journals are end-to-end encrypted by default for supported versions and settings. Its AI documentation describes a boundary to that protection: when a user invokes an AI feature, the content needed for the request is temporarily decrypted on-device, then sent through encrypted protocols to Day One’s servers and an AI service. Day One says requests are not retained after processing and providers do not use the content for training; it also says some models can run on-device. Treat these as first-party statements rather than independently verified guarantees, and check the current documentation for the feature you intend to use. Day One AI features and privacy
Rosebud: examine voice and provider disclosures separately
Rosebud’s privacy policy, surfaced as revised September 8, 2026, names OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, AWS, and Groq among providers used for AI and language processing. It says voice journaling, dictation, and voice conversations involve audio and transcripts, and describes a Zero Data Retention agreement for audio and text sent to ElevenLabs. That specific statement does not establish end-to-end encryption or zero retention for every provider, feature, or data type. Review the live policy and the app’s current settings before relying on it. Rosebud privacy policy

Make the decision based on your own threat model
For low-sensitivity reflections, you may accept server-side AI processing if the app clearly discloses the route and gives you meaningful control over what is sent. For highly sensitive notes, prioritize local-only storage or entries that you can reliably exclude from AI features. If you need cloud sync, weigh its convenience against account access, key recovery, and deletion details rather than treating sync itself as proof of weak or strong security.
No disclosure page is a security audit. Policies describe what a provider says it does, but do not independently establish how controls are implemented or whether every copy has been removed. Recheck policies and in-app controls because app features and provider arrangements can change.
