Choose an AI chatbot by matching its data controls to what you plan to share, testing how well it handles your actual tasks, and checking the current price and limits for the plan available in your country. No single chatbot is established as the best across privacy, accuracy, and cost. For sensitive information or consequential decisions, understand the service’s terms and verify its answers before relying on them.

Start with your account and the information you plan to share

Before comparing chatbots, decide what you will use them for and whether the account is personal, managed by an organization, or part of a business workspace. Consumer controls and data terms can differ from business or managed-account defaults, and an administrator may control some settings. OpenAI specifically says data handling and controls vary by account type and workspace settings, with different model-training defaults for business and managed workspaces. Check the terms and settings for the exact account you will use.

For personal use, treat prompts as information you are sharing with a service. Avoid entering passwords, authentication codes, confidential work material, or personal details you would not want handled under that provider’s policy. If you want to compare how a chatbot responds, use synthetic examples rather than real sensitive data.

Compare privacy controls by what each one actually does

“Private” is not a single setting. Check separately whether chats can be used to improve models, whether they remain in your history, whether you can delete them, whether the service has a temporary or incognito mode, and how long data may be retained. A control that changes model training does not necessarily delete a conversation or prevent all authorized access.

ChatGPT

OpenAI says turning off Improve the model for everyone means new conversations will not be used to train OpenAI models; regular chats can still remain in history. See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.

Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Temporary Chat is therefore a limited mode, not confidential storage or a guarantee that no copy is retained. Read the Temporary Chat terms.

OpenAI also says limited authorized personnel or service providers may access content for stated operational, support, legal, security, or improvement purposes, subject to controls; content may be stored on OpenAI and service-provider systems in the United States and elsewhere. Review OpenAI’s consumer data information.

Claude

Anthropic says consumer chats and coding sessions may be used for model improvement if a user opts in, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement under its policy. Check Anthropic’s training policy.

Anthropic says deleting a conversation removes it from chat history immediately and from backend systems within 30 days. If a user allows model improvement, data may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines. Its policy also describes longer retention in certain safety-policy cases, for submitted feedback, and for legal or policy-related reasons. These statements concern consumer products; Anthropic directs commercial customers to separate documentation. Read Anthropic’s retention details.

Gemini

Google’s Gemini plans page provides subscription information, but a plan listing alone does not establish how consumer chats are retained or used. Review the current Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and your account activity settings for your country and account type before deciding what to share. The available information here does not support a direct privacy comparison between Gemini and the more fully documented ChatGPT and Claude terms above.

Test accuracy for your own tasks—and verify important answers

A fluent answer is not proof that it is true. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT outputs may be “inaccurate, untruthful, and otherwise misleading at times,” and recommends checking whether responses are accurate. Read OpenAI’s explanation of ChatGPT capabilities and limitations. This is an acknowledgment of a general failure mode, not evidence that one chatbot is more accurate than another.

Try each candidate on representative, low-risk tasks you actually expect to use it for. Check whether it follows your instructions, distinguishes facts from uncertainty, and provides sources you can inspect when appropriate. Do not use a few test prompts as a factual accuracy ranking: no comparable current official benchmark here establishes a winner among the named services.

Use a verification habit for consequential claims

  • Open cited links and confirm they support the specific claim, rather than relying on citation appearance alone.
  • Check dates, definitions, units, and the context around quoted material.
  • For health, legal, financial, safety, or other high-consequence questions, consult original documentation, regulators, or a qualified professional instead of treating a chatbot as the final authority.

Compare the price and limits of the plan you would actually use

Prices, plan names, features, and usage limits can change and may vary by country, platform, promotion, and billing arrangement. ChatGPT is free to use, with subscription plans also available according to OpenAI’s help page. Check ChatGPT’s current details, then compare the official live pages for Claude and Google Gemini.

Compare the same practical requirements across services: the price in your currency and billing interval, the usage allowance you need, and whether the features you rely on are included in that plan. Do not assume that a price or feature shown for one country or platform applies to your own account.

Make the choice using your priorities

  • If you handle sensitive personal information: Prefer a service whose controls and retention terms you have reviewed, and use the available training, deletion, memory, and temporary-chat controls deliberately. Do not treat any one toggle as a substitute for understanding the full policy.
  • If reliable answers matter most: Choose based on performance on your real, low-risk tasks and how readily you can verify important output. Keep primary sources in the loop for consequential decisions.
  • If budget matters most: Compare the current plan you would actually buy with its limits and required features, rather than choosing from an old price comparison.
  • If your account is managed or business-provided: Confirm the workspace policy and administrator-controlled settings; consumer-account assumptions may not apply.
