A closer endpoint is not a proven fix for interruptions. Start by checking your upload capacity, encoder settings, network stability, and YouTube stream health. If you have more than one valid ingest endpoint, compare them under consistent conditions rather than assuming geography predicts reliability.
Does YouTube let you choose an RTMP server region?
YouTube’s documented creator workflow is to copy the current stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room and enter them in your encoder. Its Live Streaming API describes primary and backup ingestion addresses. The reviewed public documentation does not describe a creator-selected geographic region or publish a “choose the nearest region” rule. That is a limit of the public instructions reviewed, not a claim about YouTube’s internal routing. Use the URL shown for your stream rather than a host copied from an old tutorial. If your workflow exposes multiple valid endpoints, treat testing them as a troubleshooting experiment: public YouTube guidance does not guarantee that a geographically nearer endpoint is available or will reduce interruptions.
Check the causes most likely to interrupt a stream
Measure available upload capacity
Test outbound upload capacity while the network is being used as it will be during the event. YouTube advises that total streaming bitrate stay below available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Shared household or office connections can leave less capacity for the encoder than a quiet-network speed test suggests. YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream,” and says, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube Help: Streaming tips.

Use encoder settings that fit the connection
Choose a bitrate appropriate to the target resolution and frame rate, but do not raise it merely to chase image quality if the connection cannot sustain it. YouTube publishes recommended ranges and encoding parameters in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Keep the encoder configuration constant when diagnosing a suspected route or endpoint problem, so that the comparison is meaningful.
Verify RTMP or RTMPS configuration
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Use the RTMPS URL supplied for the stream when selecting that protocol in your encoder. Google’s developer guide specifies port 443 and use of the ingestion hostname for SNI authentication; an incorrect protocol, hostname, port, or TLS configuration can result in SSL errors or timeouts. Check the local network before blaming the route
If the encoder is on Wi-Fi and drops or fluctuates, test on wired Ethernet as a local-network diagnostic. A cable may help isolate an unstable wireless link, but it cannot resolve congestion beyond your local network, guarantee a better route to YouTube, or select an ingest region.
Test the complete stream before the event
- Copy the current stream details. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key for the stream you are setting up, then enter them in the encoder. Do not assume a URL from an older guide is still the one to use.
- Confirm the protocol and connection details. Match the encoder protocol to the URL. For RTMPS, check the hostname, port 443, and TLS/SNI handling against YouTube’s RTMPS guide.
- Run an event-like test. Use similar audio, motion, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the planned stream. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages while the encoder is transmitting.
- Monitor real network conditions. Test while other expected users and devices are active. Confirm that upload capacity remains above the encoder’s total bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Exercise backup failover if configured. YouTube recommends testing rollover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player switches to the backup. Do this before relying on a backup during an event; see Streaming tips.
If multiple ingest endpoints are available, compare them fairly
Do not judge endpoints by distance alone. If your setup supplies more than one valid endpoint, keep encoder settings and network load consistent and compare results over representative sessions. Look at:

- Round-trip latency and how much it varies.
- Packet loss, connection resets, or disconnects.
- Encoder dropped frames and YouTube stream-health messages.
- Whether configured failover works and the player rolls over successfully.
Any observed result applies to your location, ISP, time, and network route. The reviewed YouTube sources establish no universal best region or ranking, and an endpoint test does not prove that a closer server caused an improvement.
When HLS is relevant—and when it is not
HLS is another YouTube ingest option, not a way to select a geographic RTMP region. YouTube’s HLS documentation describes HTTPS delivery using media segments and notes higher latency than continuous RTMP because the stream is sent in segments. Consider HLS only if its capabilities suit your use case and the latency trade-off is acceptable; see Set up an HLS stream.

Troubleshoot common connection problems
