What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by comparing 500 Hz and 1,000 Hz if your mouse supports both. Keep the higher rate only if it feels worthwhile in your games and does not cause unwanted battery drain or performance problems. There is no single best polling rate for every wireless mouse, PC, game, and player.
What polling rate changes
Polling rate, also called report rate, is how often a mouse sends its position and button activity to the computer. A higher rate shortens the nominal interval between reports: 125 Hz is one report every 8 milliseconds, while 1,000 Hz is one every 1 millisecond, according to Logitech’s guide. These intervals describe reporting frequency, not total click-to-screen or end-to-end latency.
For reference, the nominal intervals at other common settings work out to:
| Polling rate | Nominal interval between reports |
|---|---|
| 125 Hz | 8 ms |
| 250 Hz | 4 ms |
| 500 Hz | 2 ms |
| 1,000 Hz | 1 ms |
| 2,000 Hz | 0.5 ms |
| 4,000 Hz | 0.25 ms |
| 8,000 Hz | 0.125 ms |
The intervals above 1,000 Hz are arithmetic conversions from the rate; they are not measurements of a complete system’s latency. Razer describes 8,000 Hz as eight times the reports per second of 1,000 Hz, with nominal intervals of 0.125 ms and 1 ms respectively, on its HyperPolling technical page.

DPI and polling rate do different jobs. DPI affects cursor speed or distance moved for a given physical movement; polling rate affects how frequently updates reach the computer. Change only polling rate while comparing settings so you can judge its effect.
How to choose a rate on your setup
- Check your mouse’s supported rates and connection mode. Look in the manufacturer’s software or documentation; a model may expose different controls over 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth, or wired connection. Do not assume every advertised rate works in every mode.
- Set a baseline of 500 or 1,000 Hz. Compare them if both are available. Logitech describes 500 Hz as suitable for serious gaming and 1,000 Hz or above as more oriented to competitive or high-end setups, while noting faster settings mainly benefit competitive gamers with high-refresh monitors. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a guarantee of what you will notice.
- Keep the comparison controlled. Use the same DPI, in-game sensitivity, game, and connection. Play the games and aim tasks that matter to you, and pay attention to smoothness and responsiveness rather than assuming the larger number is automatically better. Logitech also recommends testing on your own hardware.
- Try rates above 1,000 Hz only if your mouse offers them. If 1,000 Hz feels good and gameplay remains stable, test 2,000, 4,000, or 8,000 Hz where available. Keep a higher setting only if you value the result enough to accept any battery or performance cost.
- Reduce the rate if performance suffers. Logitech says some users may see FPS drops above 1 kHz, possibly because of additional USB traffic. If that happens, try a lower rate in the same game and under the same conditions; Logitech also suggests checking another game.
- Choose a lower setting when battery economy matters more. Higher rates may use more battery, but the exact effect depends on the mouse and how you use it. A lower report rate can be a practical trade-off for everyday use rather than competitive play.
What to compare besides the number
- Nominal report interval: The mathematical time between reports, not a promise of an equivalent reduction in full-system latency.
- Feel in your games: Judge the setting in the games you actually play and with your monitor. Manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal rate that every player will perceive as better.
- Battery priority: Consider whether the possible responsiveness benefit is worth potentially shorter runtime on your wireless mouse.
- Game and PC stability: Watch for FPS or system-performance changes, particularly above 1,000 Hz, and compare in the game where a problem appears.
- Compatibility: Confirm that the setting is available in your current connection mode and supported by the mouse’s software and firmware.
Why wireless mouse options vary by model
Polling-rate choices and connection requirements are model-specific. For example, ASUS’s ROG Harpe II Ace FAQ, last updated January 28, 2026, lists 125, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 4,000, and 8,000 Hz. ASUS says the device settings require Gear Link and are available when the mouse is connected by 2.4 GHz wireless or wired mode; consult the ROG Harpe II Ace FAQ for that model’s conditions. The listed maximum does not establish that every setup benefits from using it.

Logitech’s support instructions for the G304/G305 describe an endurance mode at 125 Hz and performance-mode options of 125, 250, 500, or 1,000 Hz. Logitech recommends performance mode for gaming and endurance mode for other profiles or apps when using multiple profiles. These are instructions for the G304/G305 family, not a rule for all wireless mice; see Logitech’s G304/G305 support page.
If your mouse lacks the settings or connection mode you need, a model with adjustable polling rate is an option—not a required upgrade if your current mouse already has a setting that works for you.

How to check whether the selected rate is working
Do not treat a browser polling-rate test as definitive proof that a mouse is faulty or incapable of its selected rate. Logitech warns that online tests may show lower or fluctuating readings because some Logitech G mice vary their report rate dynamically to save battery, and browser tools may not process high report rates correctly. Logitech names the standalone MouseTester as a possible way to validate maximum rate for its devices and recommends contacting support if the selected rate appears faulty. See Logitech’s guidance on checking mouse behavior; verify what applies to your own model with its manufacturer.
