To access devices and files on your home network while away, choose a router that can run a VPN server—not merely a VPN client. The server at home accepts a connection from your phone or laptop; the remote device then uses a VPN app or built-in client to connect. A router that sends household traffic through a commercial VPN service does a different job.

How do I access my home network remotely?

Set up a VPN server on your home router, then configure each remote device to connect to it. Once connected, the device can reach the home-network resources you allow, such as a file server or printer. You do not inherently need a commercial VPN subscription for this arrangement: the server is hosted at home, and the phone or computer is its VPN client. [TP-Link’s WireGuard setup guide]

First confirm the home internet connection can be reached from outside. The VPN server needs a reachable endpoint and appropriate firewall rules. If an ISP gateway or another router sits upstream of the VPN router, you may need to forward the VPN port through that gateway. Public addressing and ISP network arrangements can affect whether inbound access is possible; do not assume every connection supports it. [OpenWrt’s WireGuard server guide] [OpenWrt’s peer configuration documentation]

What should I look for when choosing a VPN router?

VPN server support for the exact model

Look specifically for WireGuard server or OpenVPN server support. A general “VPN support” label is not enough: it may refer only to VPN client mode, or to another feature entirely. Check the official support page and specifications for the exact model, hardware revision, and firmware you plan to buy. TP-Link’s guide uses the Archer AX55 as an example of WireGuard server setup; ASUS also documents WireGuard server setup on supported routers and directs users to model specifications. These are feature examples, not endorsements or evidence that every regional SKU or revision supports the same workflow. [TP-Link] [ASUS]

Reachability through your ISP and gateway

Check how the router will receive connections from the internet. Find out whether your home connection has a usable public endpoint and whether an upstream ISP gateway or firewall must forward the VPN port to your router. OpenWrt’s guidance describes the common arrangement of a server-side peer with a public IP, fixed VPN port, and firewall rule; a roaming client typically does not need an incoming port opened. Your own ISP addressing and equipment determine whether that arrangement applies. If you cannot establish a workable inbound path, do not buy on the assumption that a VPN server will be reachable. [OpenWrt server guide] [OpenWrt peer documentation]

Protocol and client workflow

Compare the server protocols offered and verify that your intended phone, laptop, or other device can connect using a compatible client. Check whether the router can create or export a configuration that can be imported on each device, and how it handles separate device identities, keys, or accounts. These details affect setup and access management. For example, TP-Link’s Archer AX55 guide covers generating client configuration and says its example accounts are limited to one client at a time; verify whether a similar limit applies to any router you are considering. Also check what traffic the VPN will carry. TP-Link distinguishes access to the home network from routing the remote device’s internet traffic through the home. If your goal is only to reach selected home resources, confirm you can configure that scope rather than assuming all internet traffic must use the tunnel. [TP-Link WireGuard guide]

Usable encrypted throughput

VPN speed depends in part on the router’s processor and VPN implementation, as well as the home internet connection and configuration. If performance matters, seek protocol-specific figures for the exact hardware rather than relying on the router’s headline Wi-Fi speed. OpenWrt publishes a model-level table of OpenVPN and WireGuard performance; treat its entries as results for the listed models and test context, not a guarantee for another router or configuration. Firmware support, usability, and recovery

Check the current firmware, official setup instructions, and ongoing model support before buying. Clear configuration and recovery guidance matters because a mistake can interrupt network access. If you are considering replacing the manufacturer firmware, understand the risks and difficulty first: Proton cautions that flashing new firmware can be challenging and can leave a router unusable if done incorrectly. [Proton’s router VPN guidance]

WireGuard or OpenVPN for remote access?

Either protocol can be suitable if your router supports it in server mode and your remote devices can use it. Compare the actual router workflow, configuration export, client compatibility, and model-specific performance rather than choosing from the protocol name alone.

WireGuard does not tunnel over TCP, so it should not be treated as guaranteed to work on every restrictive network. A client network that blocks or restricts the required traffic can prevent a connection. WireGuard’s official Quick Start describes persistent keepalive as a way to preserve a NAT or firewall mapping when a quiet peer needs to receive inbound traffic; it calls 25 seconds “a sensible interval that works with a wide variety of firewalls.” This is an optional setting to consider for relevant network conditions, not a universal requirement. • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
  1. Confirm the topology. Identify the router that will host the VPN server, any ISP gateway upstream, and whether you have a workable public endpoint for inbound connections.
  2. Enable server mode. In the router’s official setup workflow, choose a supported VPN server protocol, such as WireGuard or OpenVPN. Do not select client mode if the goal is access back into your home.
  3. Configure remote-device access. Create the device or peer configuration required by the router. Export or generate a configuration for each remote phone or computer, following any model-specific account or client limits.
  4. Allow the connection through the network. Apply the router firewall rule and, if there is an upstream gateway, forward the VPN port to the server router as required by your topology.
  5. Install and test the remote client. Import the matching configuration on the remote device and test access from outside your home network. Verify that the intended home resources are reachable and that the traffic behavior matches your needs.

For a model-specific example, TP-Link’s guide documents WireGuard server configuration on the Archer AX55. ASUS provides a separate WireGuard server guide for supported routers. Follow the current instructions for your exact model rather than assuming the example applies to another router. [TP-Link setup guide] [ASUS setup guide]

When is a router VPN client the right feature?

A VPN client on the home router serves a different purpose: it routes some or all household devices through a third-party VPN provider. That is useful when you want home devices to use that provider, but it does not by itself create a server that lets you reach your home network while traveling. Proton’s router instructions require client support for OpenVPN or WireGuard and note that many ISP-provided routers lack VPN configuration support. [Proton router guidance]
