The right Uniswap v3 range is the widest interval you can realistically monitor and rebalance, not a universal percentage copied from another pool. A narrow range puts more capital near the current price and can earn fees efficiently while price remains inside it; when price crosses a boundary, that liquidity becomes single-sided and stops earning fees. A wider or layered range stays active across more prices but usually gives up some fee concentration. Choose bounds from the specific pair, fee tier, chain, volatility and holding period, then rebalance only when the expected benefit is greater than gas, swap, tax and inventory-risk costs.
What a Uniswap v3 range actually controls
In Uniswap v3, you select a lower and upper tick that define a finite price interval. Liquidity is active only while the pool price is between those bounds. Uniswap’s developer documentation explains that each tick represents a 0.01% price increment and that liquidity outside its interval is inactive until the price returns: Uniswap Developers’ concentrated-liquidity guide.
Uniswap Labs Support states the practical consequence plainly: “Out of range liquidity is single-sided and does not earn fees until the current price of the pool moves into the set range.” Read that definition at Uniswap Support.

Why range width changes both fees and risk
Narrow ranges
A narrow interval concentrates liquidity close to the current price. When trading stays inside that interval, the same deposited capital can offer greater depth than a broad position, which may improve fee density. The trade-off is a high probability of becoming inactive after a relatively small move. Once the price exits, the position progressively converts into one token and then remains single-sided until re-entry.
Wide and full ranges
A wide interval covers more possible prices and therefore has a lower chance of being completely inactive at any one time. Because capital is spread across a larger span, less of it is concentrated at the current price. Uniswap Support notes that wide ranges can earn lower fees than narrower ranges where trading is more likely. A full-range position minimizes boundary risk but generally has the lowest capital concentration and fee efficiency.
Layered ranges
You can create several positions in the same pool, each with its own interval. A practical design is a narrower core around the prices you expect to see most often plus a wider safety band that remains active through larger moves. Layering does not eliminate risk: each position can still go out of range, and the narrow core may become single-sided before the outer position does.
Range orders
A one-sided position placed outside the current spot price can approximate a limit order. The v3 whitepaper explains that very small ranges behave similarly to limit orders: after the range is crossed, the position flips to entirely one asset plus accrued fees. The whitepaper is available at uniswap.org/whitepaper-v3.pdf. Uniswap’s range-order documentation also warns that a wider range may collect more fees during choppy trading but has a greater chance of remaining unfilled if price reverses.
A decision framework for setting your bounds
1. Define the position before looking at percentages
Write down the exact pool, chain, fee tier, current price, deposit size and intended holding period. ETH/USDC on one fee tier can have a very different volatility and trading pattern from the same pair on another chain or tier. A range copied from a different pool, date or quote-token convention can be inappropriate.
- Pair and price convention: confirm which token is the base and whether the displayed price is token A per token B or the inverse.
- Fee tier: higher or lower trading fees affect the fee income needed to justify active management, but a fee tier does not make a range safe.
- Monitoring ability: decide whether you can check daily, weekly or only occasionally.
- Exposure you are willing to hold: identify whether ending up entirely in either token would still be acceptable.
- Costs: estimate network gas, swap fees, slippage, taxes and the cost of closing and reopening positions.
2. Estimate a plausible price band
Use pool-specific evidence rather than a universal rule. Review historical volatility, recent realized moves, liquidity depth and your own upside and downside tolerance. The cited Uniswap materials do not publish a universally safe percentage, guaranteed fee APR or break-even width. Any range percentage is therefore a planning assumption, not a protocol standard.

Separate a central expected band from an outer buffer. The central band represents prices at which you expect meaningful trading; the buffer accounts for the time between your checks and the cost of reacting. A volatile pair or infrequently monitored position needs a larger buffer than a stable pair that you can actively manage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Convert the band into ticks
Set the lower tick below the central band and the upper tick above it. Because ticks are spaced at 0.01% price increments, a small change in ticks can represent a meaningful compounded price move over hundreds or thousands of ticks. Use the pool interface or a calculator that respects the pool’s tick spacing; not every fee tier permits every individual tick as a usable boundary.
Check the result in the interface using the same quote direction as your plan. A visually symmetric percentage range may not produce symmetric token amounts because the liquidity curve and current price determine the inventory mix.
4. Choose a width that matches your monitoring interval
If you can monitor continuously and accept frequent inventory changes, a narrower range may be reasonable. If you can review only weekly or monthly, widening the interval or using an outer position reduces the chance that all capital becomes inactive before you can act. The correct width is the one whose boundary-crossing frequency you can afford operationally and financially.
5. Decide whether to layer positions
A core-and-safety structure can balance fee focus and resilience:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Core position: narrower, centered on the prices where you expect most volume; allocate only capital you can actively manage.
- Safety position: wider, covering a broader path and reducing the chance that the entire allocation is inactive.
- Reserve: uncommitted capital held for gas, redeployment or a deliberate change in exposure.
Keep records for each NFT position separately. Combining their balances mentally can hide the fact that one position is inactive while another remains active.

How to choose a range step by step
- Open the exact pool. Verify token addresses, chain, fee tier and current spot price. Do not rely on a similarly named pool or a stale screenshot.
- Record a baseline. Note current price, your deposit value in each token, pool liquidity and the time of entry. This gives you a reference for later inventory and performance comparisons.
- Set your central band. Use a period of historical movement that resembles your planned holding period, then adjust for current volatility and your maximum acceptable conversion into either token.
- Add a monitoring buffer. Move the lower bound below and the upper bound above the central band far enough to cover expected movement between reviews. The buffer is a risk choice, not a promise that the position will remain active.
- Check token composition at the proposed bounds. Moving the range relative to spot changes how much of each token you deposit. A range entirely above spot is one-sided in one asset; a range entirely below spot is one-sided in the other.
- Calculate a break-even threshold. Estimate the fees required to compensate for gas, swaps, taxes and the value difference created by price movement. If the expected additional fees from a narrower range cannot cover those costs, widen the range or do not provide liquidity.
- Write the rebalance rule before depositing. Examples include reviewing every seven days, acting when spot is within a specified distance of a boundary, or acting only when the position has been inactive for a defined period. Include a minimum expected benefit so ordinary noise does not trigger costly transactions.
- Deposit and monitor both status and inventory. An “in range” indicator tells you whether fees can accrue; it does not tell you whether the position is profitable after price change, gas and taxes.
What happens when price leaves your range
Below the lower bound
For an ETH/USDC position, moving below the lower ETH price converts the position toward ETH until it is entirely ETH. At that point it is inactive and earns no additional fees unless ETH/USDC returns to the interval.
Above the upper bound
Moving above the upper bound converts the position toward USDC until it is entirely USDC. It remains inactive while price stays above the interval and becomes active again only if price re-enters.
If price later re-enters
Re-entry restores active liquidity under the protocol’s rules; you do not have to redeploy merely because the price crossed a boundary. Waiting can avoid an unnecessary swap and gas expense, but it also means accepting the current single-asset exposure and any further move away from the range.

Understanding out-of-range loss and impermanent loss
Impermanent loss is the difference in value that results when token prices change from their level when you added liquidity, compared with holding the tokens without providing liquidity. Uniswap Labs explains the concept and notes that concentrated ranges generally increase the chance of impermanent loss: What is impermanent loss?
Out-of-range loss is not a liquidation penalty. The economic problem is that the position ends up entirely in one asset after the market has moved, while it earns no fees during inactivity. If the market continues in the same direction, that single-asset inventory can underperform simply holding the original mix. If the market reverses, the position may re-enter, but the path and timing determine the result.
Fees can offset some loss, but neither the protocol documentation nor the cited studies guarantees that fees will compensate for impermanent loss, conversion effects or management costs. Evaluate net results in the units that matter to you, such as dollars, ETH, or a target portfolio percentage, rather than using fee totals alone.

Range styles compared
| Style | Active-price coverage | Capital concentration | Main advantage | Main risk or cost | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full range | Broadest | Lowest | Lowest chance of complete inactivity | Usually lower fee efficiency | Passive exposure and infrequent monitoring |
| Wide range | Broad | Low to moderate | More resilience across volatile moves | Less capital at the current price | Volatile pairs or weekly/monthly reviews |
| Narrow range | Limited | Highest | Potentially greater fee density while active | Highest chance of going single-sided and inactive | Frequent monitoring and clear exposure limits |
| Layered ranges | Combined coverage | Adjustable by layer | Combines a fee-focused core with a safety band | More positions and management decisions | Active managers balancing efficiency and resilience |
| Range order | One directional interval | Concentrated | Can execute a gradual one-sided conversion with fees | May remain unfilled if price reverses; inventory changes after crossing | Preplanned entry or exit at a target zone |
When should you rebalance?
There is no protocol-mandated schedule. Rebalancing is worthwhile only when restoring active liquidity is expected to produce more value than the transaction and exposure costs. Include all of the following in the calculation:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Network gas for removing, swapping and adding liquidity.
- Swap fees and price impact when converting the single-sided inventory.
- Taxes or accounting consequences in your jurisdiction.
- Impermanent-loss and directional-exposure effects caused by the move that took price out of range.
- Expected fee income before the next review, not historical fees alone.
- The opportunity cost of holding the resulting token mix instead of waiting.
Use a trigger that is easy to follow. For example, review on a fixed cadence and perform a transaction only when price is near a boundary or the position has been inactive long enough that expected future fees justify the total cost. A rebalance is an active trade: it can crystallize a loss and does not guarantee that the new range will be profitable.

- Price direction: confirm that your lower and upper numbers refer to the pool’s displayed quote, not its inverse.
- Tick validity: ensure both boundaries align with the pool’s permitted tick spacing.
- Single-sided tolerance: decide whether you would willingly hold 100% of either token.
- Liquidity depth: shallow pools can make rebalancing swaps expensive through slippage.
- Operational access: keep the wallet, network funds and transaction permissions needed to manage the position.
- Record keeping: save the entry price, ticks, fee tier, token amounts and transaction hashes.
- Security: verify the pool and contract addresses and review every transaction before signing.
What published evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Uniswap Labs used a 2021 example to illustrate capital efficiency: “If the ~$25m currently held in the Uniswap v2 DAI/USDC pair was instead concentrated between 0.99 — 1.01 in v3, it would provide the same depth as $5bn in Uniswap v2 as long as the price stayed within that range.” The example is historical and conditional on price remaining inside that interval; it is not a current return estimate. See Uniswap Labs’ v3 announcement.
The same announcement said, “At launch, capital efficiency gains will max out at 4000x for LPs providing liquidity within a single 0.10% price range.” That launch-era figure describes a theoretical capital-efficiency comparison, not a guaranteed fee multiple or outcome for a present-day pool.
Academic work supports treating range selection as an adaptive allocation problem, while keeping its limits clear. “Strategic Liquidity Provision in Uniswap v3” models allocation to one or more closed intervals and reports improvements over baseline strategies using historical prices; its results are not a promise for a particular pool or future period: arXiv:2106.12033. “Decentralised Finance and Automated Market Making: Predictable Loss and Optimal Liquidity Provision” identifies price leaving the range as concentration risk and reports significant average losses in its Uniswap v3 sample; those are study-specific historical findings, not a forecast: arXiv:2309.08431.

Active manager
Use a narrower core only with a written trigger, frequent checks and enough network funds for transactions. Keep a wider layer or reserve if a sudden move would otherwise leave your entire allocation inactive.
Directional investor
Choose bounds that make the resulting single-asset inventory acceptable. A range can intentionally express a gradual conversion, but treat it as an active strategy with execution and reversal risk, not as passive yield.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a safe percentage range for ETH/USDC?
No universal percentage is established by the cited Uniswap documentation. Volatility, fee tier, chain, monitoring frequency and your acceptable token exposure determine the width.
Do I lose my tokens when price leaves the range?
No. The position is not liquidated. It becomes inactive and can become entirely one token; it can earn fees again if price returns to the interval.
Should I immediately remove an out-of-range position?
Not automatically. Compare the value of waiting for re-entry with the full cost and risk of removing, swapping and redeploying. Immediate redeployment can crystallize a loss.
Can fees guarantee that a narrow range is profitable?
No. Fees may offset some impermanent loss and costs, but the cited sources provide no guaranteed break-even width, APR or profit.
