For most GTA VI players, the right purchase is a 4K television with genuine 120Hz input, variable refresh rate (VRR), automatic low-latency mode (ALLM), and at least one full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 port. Choose a monitor instead when the console will sit on a desk, you want a smaller screen, or the same display will also serve a gaming PC. A 4K/165Hz or 4K/240Hz display is not necessary for a console-only setup.
Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Rockstar’s official page currently says it plays best on PlayStation 5, while the Xbox and Rockstar listings identify Xbox Series X|S as supported platforms. The Xbox hardware specification establishes what the consoles can output, but it does not disclose GTA VI’s final resolution, frame-rate modes, HDR format, or VRR range.
Start with the console’s real display ceiling
Buy the display around the capabilities that are documented today, not around assumptions about how GTA VI will render. Xbox’s ninth-generation hardware fact sheet lists HDMI VRR, AMD FreeSync, 2160p (4K) at 120Hz capability, and HDMI Out 2.1 for both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Those are hardware and signal capabilities; they are not a promise that every game, including GTA VI, will render natively at 4K or run at 120 frames per second.

PlayStation and Rockstar confirm the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation’s launch announcement says GTA VI will play best on PS5 by using features such as DualSense haptics, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and the PS5 SSD. That statement concerns the game and console experience, not a published television specification.

The specification to target
| Feature | What to look for | Why it matters for a console |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 4K (3,840 × 2,160) | Provides suitable pixel density for a large living-room screen and leaves room for the game’s eventual performance modes. |
| Refresh input | True 120Hz input over HDMI | Matches the 120Hz-class output capability advertised for current-generation consoles. A higher panel rating mainly benefits a PC. |
| Variable refresh rate | HDMI Forum VRR or a manufacturer-supported equivalent | Lets the display adjust its refresh timing as game output changes, reducing tearing and uneven motion. |
| Automatic low-latency mode | ALLM, with a responsive game mode | Automatically switches the television or monitor to its lower-latency picture mode when the console is active. |
| HDMI | At least one full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 input; check the number of suitable ports | Provides the connection headroom for 4K/120Hz, VRR and other high-bandwidth console features. |
| HDR | Good HDR performance appropriate to the room | Improves contrast and highlight detail when a game and display are both configured for HDR, but GTA VI’s required HDR format has not been published. |
Why each feature matters
4K resolution is a sensible target, not a GTA VI guarantee
A 4K panel is the practical choice for a 55-inch or larger television and remains useful if the game offers more than one image-quality mode. Do not read the display’s 4K label as confirmation that GTA VI will render every scene at native 4K. Developers can use dynamic resolution, reconstruction or different modes, and Rockstar has not published the final details.
120Hz input is the useful ceiling for a console
Specify 120Hz input rather than only a high number printed on the panel box. Current-generation consoles advertise 120Hz-class output, so a display that can accept 4K at 120Hz gives the game the widest documented console signal path. A 165Hz or 240Hz panel does not make a console game run at that rate. Those extra refresh cycles become useful when the same screen is connected to a gaming PC or another high-refresh source.

Without VRR, a fixed-refresh display can show tearing or uneven cadence when a game’s frame delivery changes. VRR allows the screen to vary its refresh timing with the incoming signal. It is one of the most useful gaming features to have enabled, but no official GTA VI-specific VRR operating range has been published. Choose a model that supports HDMI VRR or an equivalent console-compatible implementation and verify the supported range in its manual.
ALLM and input lag
ALLM lets a console tell the display to enter its low-latency game mode automatically, avoiding a trip through picture menus. Input lag still varies by model and picture setting. No independent latency measurement is established here, so do not shop by an unverified “best” number. Look for a documented game mode, enable ALLM, and disable processing features that add delay if the manufacturer identifies them as non-gaming enhancements.

- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
HDMI 2.1 is about the whole signal path
HDMI 2.1 matters when you want the console’s high-bandwidth features, but the label alone is not enough. Check the specification for the input’s actual bandwidth and supported combinations of 4K, 120Hz and VRR. Count the suitable ports as well. One port may be consumed by a console, while another may be needed for a second console or a PC.
Also check whether the eARC port is one of those HDMI 2.1 inputs. A soundbar or AV receiver connected through eARC can occupy the port you planned to use for a console. If your setup includes a console, a receiver or soundbar, and another high-bandwidth device, buying a display with more than one suitable HDMI 2.1 input avoids swapping cables.
TV or monitor: choose by where and how you play
| Choose a TV when… | Choose a monitor when… |
|---|---|
| The console is viewed from a sofa or across a room. | The console sits on a desk and you sit close to it. |
| You want a 55-inch-or-larger image and cinematic single-player presentation. | You prefer a compact 27-inch-to-32-inch screen. |
| Built-in speakers, streaming apps and simple living-room integration are useful. | The display will also connect to a gaming PC. |
| You want television-style HDR processing and easy console switching. | Refresh rates above the console’s 120Hz-class target have practical value for PC games. |
When a TV is the better fit
A living-room TV makes sense when GTA VI will be played from a couch, shared with other people, or used as the main entertainment screen. Larger sizes make the game’s environments easier to appreciate at normal seating distances. TVs also tend to provide speakers, streaming applications and remote-control access without extra equipment.
When a monitor is the better fit
A monitor is preferable at a desk, where a 27-inch or 32-inch image fills your field of view without requiring a deep room. It is also the logical choice if the console shares a workspace with a gaming PC. In that case, 144Hz, 165Hz or higher can be worthwhile for PC titles, even though the console itself does not need more than a 120Hz-class input path.
Confirm console compatibility before buying a monitor. Some high-refresh PC monitors accept their maximum refresh rate only through DisplayPort, while the console uses HDMI. Verify that the HDMI input supports the resolution, refresh rate and VRR combination you intend to use.

OLED, LCD and mini-LED for GTA VI
OLED
OLED pixels can turn off individually, producing very deep blacks in night scenes and strong contrast in a dark room. That makes OLED attractive for a cinematic open-world game. Look for the full gaming feature set rather than the panel name alone: 4K/120Hz input, VRR, ALLM and suitable HDMI 2.1 ports.

OLED is not automatically the right choice for every room. Bright windows can favor a brighter LCD or mini-LED display, and buyers who worry about long-term static-image exposure may prefer a non-OLED panel. Use the manufacturer’s care guidance and vary static content if you choose OLED.
Bright LCD or mini-LED
A bright LCD or mini-LED model can be easier to see in a sunlit room and may suit buyers who prioritize sustained brightness. Its local-dimming behavior, viewing angle and motion handling differ by model, so compare those characteristics in addition to the headline refresh rate. These are general display trade-offs, not GTA VI-specific requirements.
Two documented TV examples
LG OLED evo AI C5
LG’s C5 specification lists four HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K/120Hz support, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision for Gaming and VRR up to 144Hz. That combination makes it a strong all-round OLED example for a console buyer who wants several high-bandwidth connections. The extra 144Hz ceiling is useful for a PC, while a console-only buyer should judge the C5 primarily on its 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM and port configuration rather than treating 144Hz as a GTA VI requirement.

Samsung S95F
Samsung’s S95F specification lists VRR and 4K input up to 165Hz. It is a premium OLED alternative for someone who will use both a console and a gaming PC. For a console-only setup, its 165Hz input ceiling is not by itself a reason to pay more than for a strong 120Hz television. Check the port layout and the supported HDMI combinations for the specific size and regional model.
How large should the screen be?
Choose size from seating distance, not from the game’s title. A 55-inch or 65-inch TV is a practical starting range for many living rooms, but the correct size depends on how far you sit, the room’s layout and whether other viewers need a wider angle. Sitting too close to a very large screen can make menus and camera movement tiring; sitting too far away from a small screen hides detail.
For a desk, 27-inch to 32-inch monitors are common practical choices. A 32-inch screen can feel more immersive at a deep desk, while 27 inches leaves more room for speakers and other equipment. Measure the desk depth and ensure the stand or monitor arm does not push the panel into an uncomfortable viewing position.
PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S considerations
PlayStation 5
PS5 is one of the confirmed platforms, and PlayStation says GTA VI will play best on PS5 using its immersive console features. A display with 4K/120Hz input, VRR, ALLM and HDMI 2.1 gives the PS5 the appropriate signal options, but it does not establish the game’s eventual frame-rate or resolution modes.
Xbox Series X
Xbox Series X’s documented capability baseline includes 2160p (4K) at 120Hz, HDMI VRR, AMD FreeSync and HDMI Out 2.1. Use those specifications to select the display’s ceiling. They describe what the console can support, not what GTA VI will output in every scene.
Best Value
- 1800R curve monitor the curved display delivers a revolutionary visual experience with a leading 1800R screen curvature as the images appear to wrap around you for an in depth, immersive experience

- Windows 10 Sceptre Monitors are fully compatible with Windows 10, the most recent operating System available on PCs.Brightness: 220 cd/M2
Xbox Series S
Xbox Series S is also listed for GTA VI, and the Xbox fact sheet lists HDMI VRR, AMD FreeSync, 2160p (4K) at 120Hz capability and HDMI Out 2.1. Do not assume Series S will deliver the same image quality or performance as Series X. The display can be the same, but the game’s final mode selection and image quality may differ by console.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set up the display correctly
- Use a suitable HDMI input. Connect the console to the display’s full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 port, not an input limited to lower bandwidth. If a receiver or soundbar sits between the console and display, verify that every device in the chain supports the required signal.
- Check the supplied cable first. Consoles include HDMI cables. Do not buy a replacement merely because the cable is not branded HDMI 2.1. Replace it only for a longer run, a damaged cable, a second console, or a cable that cannot reliably carry your chosen signal.
- Enable the console’s video features. In the console video settings, select the highest supported resolution and refresh rate, then enable VRR if the display reports compatibility. Exact menu names can change with system software, so confirm the choices shown by your console.
- Turn on ALLM. Enable automatic low-latency mode on both the display and console when the options exist. If the display does not switch automatically, select its game picture mode manually.
- Configure HDR only after checking the result. Use the console’s HDR calibration screen and the television’s instructions. Do not infer that GTA VI requires a particular HDR format from the television’s specification sheet; Rockstar has not published that requirement.
- Route audio deliberately. If you use eARC, identify which HDMI port provides it before connecting the console. Confirm that the soundbar or receiver does not remove 4K/120Hz or VRR support from the signal path.
- Update firmware before launch. Display firmware can add compatibility fixes. Install updates before November 19, 2026, then recheck the console’s resolution, refresh and VRR status.
Buying checklist
- 4K panel in the size that suits your seating distance.
- Documented 120Hz HDMI input, not only a high maximum refresh number for DisplayPort.
- VRR support compatible with your console.
- ALLM or a clearly documented low-latency game mode.
- At least one full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 input; preferably more if you have multiple devices.
- eARC location identified before you connect a soundbar or receiver.
- Brightness, black level and viewing-angle behavior suited to your room.
- Regional model suffix, size availability, warranty and return policy checked before purchase.
- No assumption that the display guarantees native 4K, 60fps or 120fps in GTA VI.
What is still unknown about GTA VI
No researched official source currently publishes GTA VI’s final resolution modes, frame-rate options, HDR requirements or VRR operating range. A television’s 4K/120Hz specification therefore describes a capable destination, not a promise about the game’s output. Wait for Rockstar’s final technical information and the console’s actual in-game options before making claims about native 4K, 60 frames per second or 120 frames per second.
Likewise, do not call any display future-proof without qualification. HDMI standards, firmware support, game modes and PC requirements can change. Buy the features that solve your current setup: 4K, 120Hz input, VRR, ALLM and enough HDMI 2.1 ports.
The practical recommendation
For a couch-based PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, start with a 4K TV that accepts 120Hz, supports VRR and ALLM, and provides the HDMI 2.1 ports your equipment needs. An OLED such as the LG OLED evo AI C5 is a strong example for buyers who value deep blacks and four HDMI 2.1 inputs. A bright LCD or mini-LED can be the better room-specific choice when sunlight and sustained brightness matter more.
Choose a monitor when the console lives on a desk, when a 27-inch-to-32-inch screen is more appropriate, or when a gaming PC will use the display’s higher refresh headroom. The Samsung S95F is an example of a premium OLED aimed at that mixed console-and-PC buyer, but its 165Hz input ceiling does not add a console benefit on its own.
The best GTA VI display is therefore not the one with the biggest refresh number. It is the screen that matches your room, viewing distance and other devices while giving the current-generation console a clean 4K/120Hz-class, VRR-capable, low-latency HDMI path.
