Choose a subwoofer driver by matching its full Thiele/Small specifications and manufacturer enclosure recommendations to your available net box volume, target bass response, amplifier, and installation space. Then model the driver in the actual sealed or ported design. Cone diameter—or any single specification—cannot tell you whether a driver is right for your box.

Start with the build, not the driver

Before comparing models, write down what the enclosure must do and what can physically fit. Those constraints determine which manufacturer-recommended alignments are realistic.

  • Use: Identify what the system will play and the low-frequency range you want.
  • Space: Record the maximum external dimensions and account for wall thickness, bracing, the driver, and any port when calculating usable net volume.
  • Amplifier: Note its supported load, available power, and any filtering you can apply.
  • Build preference: Decide whether you can accommodate a port and its dimensions, or prefer a sealed enclosure without port tuning.

Manufacturer box-volume recommendations are specific to a driver model, not universal rules. For example, MTX’s car speaker enclosure design guide offers parameter guidance, but such targets should not replace modeling the actual driver and box.

  • Fs: The driver’s free-air resonance frequency.
  • Qts: Total Q, one of the parameters used to assess enclosure alignment.
  • Vas: Equivalent compliance volume, relevant to how the driver interacts with enclosure volume.
  • Xmax and Sd: Linear excursion and cone area, useful when evaluating displacement capability and modeled excursion.
  • Impedance and power handling: Check that the driver’s load suits the amplifier and that the planned operating level is within the driver’s limits.
  • Physical dimensions and displacement: Confirm cutout, mounting depth, outer diameter, and the volume occupied inside the box.

Published specifications describe the model; they do not prove that it will meet a particular response target in every enclosure. Use them as inputs to a loudspeaker model, then evaluate response and excursion in the proposed net volume under the intended power and filtering.

Check whether the driver fits the enclosure type

Prefer candidates with complete manufacturer specifications and recommendations for the enclosure style you plan to build. Published volume ranges help screen options, but the chosen design still needs to be modeled.

Eminence LAB 12 Sealed: 22.7–28.3 L (0.8–1.0 ft³); vented: 45.3–101.9 L (1.6–3.6 ft³). Also listed for horn-loaded enclosures. Qts 0.38; Fs 22 Hz; Vas 125.2 L; Xmax 13 mm.
Eminence Sigma Pro 18A Vented: 93–212 L (3.3–7.5 ft³); sealed volume listed as not applicable. Qts 0.29; Fs 28 Hz; Vas 441.2 L; Xmax 6.1 mm.
Eminence Delta Pro 15A Sealed: 28–42.5 L (1–1.5 ft³); vented: 57–133 L (2–4.7 ft³). Qts 0.40; Fs 42 Hz; Vas 243.5 L.

These are model-specific manufacturer specifications and recommendations, not independently measured results or universal formulas. In particular, the Sigma Pro 18A example shows why a low Qts value alone does not define a complete box design. The product pages provide no publication date for these specifications; check the current manufacturer listing before purchasing.

Evaluate a sealed design

For a sealed enclosure, first compare the available net volume with the manufacturer’s recommendation. Then model the candidate in that volume to see whether its response and excursion suit your target and intended power.

Dayton Audio SD215A-88 8" DVC Subwoofer
  • Works equally well in sealed or vented enclosures
  • Attractive gasket-less design
  • Long-life rubber surround for years of reliable service
  • Excellent bottom octave performance

A sealed box avoids port dimensions and port tuning. That simplifies the design, but it does not guarantee a particular sound quality or response: those depend on the driver, box volume, and applied signal.

Evaluate a ported design

For a vented enclosure, choose the target tuning together with the net box volume and driver. Size the port for that specific design, then model port behavior and driver excursion. Confirm that the port’s area and length can fit without making the enclosure impractical.

RECOIL RW8D2 8 Inch 400W Power Dual 2 Ohm Voice Coil Car Audio Subwoofer
  • Recoil Echo series 8-Inch Dual 2-ohm Car Subwoofer, Peak Power: 400 Watts | RMS Power: 200 Watts
  • The 2-Inch 4-Layer black aluminum voice coil is designed for sound and wiring flexibility, efficient thermal heat management, high-strength construction, and high-temperature. They are coated with black glue that handles extremely high temperatures which allows our woofer to handle even more power than they are rated.
  • High strength pressed paper cone is super thick and strong. And the NBR surround provides incredible sound quality with minimal distortion, black stitching reinforces the cone and ensures long life.
  • It utilizes an advanced air flow cooling structural design for heat dissipation, which optimizes performance even further.
  • Custom Recoil basket, Custom magnet cover, Custom Recoil mounting gasket makes it easy to mount the subwoofer Air-Tight.

Below tuning, a vented enclosure provides little control of driver movement. Kicker’s How to Build a Subwoofer Box guide warns about this behavior and says calculated vent dimensions can be inaccurate enough that tuning should be measured. Check modeled excursion below tuning and ensure the amplifier’s filtering and operating level are appropriate. After construction, measure the actual tuning where feasible rather than assuming the built port matches the calculation.

Compare the candidates that remain

Once unsuitable alignments and physical fits are eliminated, compare the viable designs against the same conditions: enclosure volume, target tuning if vented, amplifier, and intended signal. Focus on:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fit: Does the recommended alignment fit the available net volume, and do the driver and port fit the physical space?
  • Response: Does the modeled frequency response suit the intended use?
  • Excursion: Is there adequate modeled headroom at the planned power, including below tuning for a vented design?
  • Port feasibility: Can the required port area and length fit, with acceptable port behavior?
  • Electrical match: Are impedance, amplifier capability, and power handling compatible? Is filtering needed?
  • Documentation: Are the specifications and model-specific enclosure recommendations complete enough to design with confidence?
  • Practical constraints: Can you build the enclosure and verify its dimensions? Check current availability and price before buying.

The available manufacturer guidance supports comparing these engineering constraints; it does not establish that sealed or ported enclosures always sound better. Choose the alignment that meets your response and space requirements while remaining feasible to build and operate.

Follow a practical selection workflow

  1. Define the target: Write down the intended use, desired bass range, maximum enclosure dimensions, and amplifier limits.
  2. Find documented candidates: Gather current manufacturer specifications and enclosure recommendations for each driver.
  3. Screen for fit: Remove candidates whose recommended alignment, mounting dimensions, or required volume cannot fit the build.
  4. Model the actual enclosure: Enter the driver specifications and net volume. For a vented box, also select and model tuning and port geometry.
  5. Compare under the same conditions: Check response, excursion, port behavior, impedance, power handling, and construction feasibility at the intended operating level.
  6. Verify the finished build: Recheck dimensions and, for a vented box, measure tuning when feasible.
  7. Confirm before purchase: Recheck the manufacturer’s current data, listing, availability, and price.
