Choose a stock alert app by checking the securities it covers, the exact triggers it supports, how often it checks prices, where it sends notifications, and what its current free and paid limits are. “Real-time” is not a standardized guarantee: one standalone app documents checks every minute during exchange hours, while other services describe alerts without comparable latency evidence. An alert is a prompt to review a market move—not a trade or a guaranteed price.
Decide whether you need a standalone app
Start with the app you already use to invest. Brokerage-native alerts can be convenient because watchlists and account holdings are already there. A standalone app may be worthwhile when you need a specific trigger, separate watchlist tools, or controls your brokerage does not offer. Avoid adding another service unless it meets a concrete need.
- Robinhood documents alerts for stocks, ETFs, and crypto assets held or watched.
- Fidelity describes price-trigger and order notifications, real-time quotes, and watchlist access on Apple Watch. This establishes those watch features, not equivalent capabilities across every Fidelity platform.
- Schwab describes mobile alerts for price changes, news, and events, with text available instead of or alongside push.
- Coinbase documents price alerts for watched assets, with push, in-app, and email delivery choices.

Match the trigger to the decision you want to make
“Price alert” can mean several different rules. Confirm that the app supports the condition you actually want, rather than assuming every service offers the same logic.

Find out what “real-time” means in practice
Look for a stated checking cadence and the hours it applies to. Stock Alert ApS says its enabled realtime alarms are monitored every minute during exchange opening hours; its non-realtime option is checked once after market close each trading day. Those are the vendor’s documented rules, not independently measured delivery times or proof of uptime.

For other services in this comparison, the cited materials describe alert features but do not establish a comparable checking interval or independently measured latency. Do not infer continuous monitoring from the word “real-time.” Ask whether alerts use live or delayed quotes, which market hours apply, and whether the condition is checked only while an exchange is open.
Stock Alert also says Apple controls widget refresh and that its developer cannot push widget updates. A widget display therefore should not be treated as a substitute for an alarm notification.

Choose notification channels and control their frequency
An alert only helps if it reaches you in a useful way without creating more interruptions than you want. Check whether the app supports push, email, text, or in-app notices, and whether each channel can be enabled separately.
- Coinbase documents push, in-app, and email choices for price alerts.
- Robinhood documents custom-alert push delivery and email settings.
- Schwab describes text alerts as an option instead of or alongside push notifications.
Also inspect the defaults. FINRA’s 2022 report on digital engagement practices says platforms may let users opt in or out of notifications, while others may set them by default. It describes notifications about price moves, top movers, and periods without trading; it does not rank the services named here. Review alert settings and disable prompts you do not need.

Check symbols, devices, watchlists, and limits
Before building a watchlist, verify that the app supports every exchange, ticker, and security type you intend to follow. Then check whether you can organize the list, add notes or tags, and manage individual alerts. Free allowances and paid terms are also product-specific and changeable. One vendor advertises a free plan with up to 10 price alerts and three watchlists; another app’s listing contains multiple subscription options. Treat those as current vendor or store-listing details, not permanent limits. Check the app’s current plan page or store listing for alert caps, recurring price, billing interval, and renewal or cancellation terms before subscribing.

A notification reports that an app believes a condition has been reached; it does not reserve that price or place an order. Coinbase states explicitly that its price alerts are notifications only and do not place an order. Notifications may arrive after a price has moved, and neither the alert nor a displayed quote guarantees an execution price. Decide separately what action, if any, is appropriate.
Run through this checklist before choosing
- List the securities and exchanges you need, then confirm symbol coverage.
- Choose the trigger you need: target price, percentage or day movement, indicator, or trailing condition.
- Find the stated checking cadence, market hours, and quote-data scope; do not equate a vendor’s “real-time” label with measured latency.
- Confirm available delivery channels and set notification frequency and defaults to your preference.
- Check phone, desktop, watch, or widget compatibility for the features you plan to use.
- Compare free alert and watchlist limits with the current recurring subscription price and renewal terms.
- Use your brokerage’s built-in alerts if they cover your needs; choose a standalone app only if its additional rules or organization solve a specific gap.
