Choose a Steam Deck when portable play, built-in controls, suspend/resume and a mostly compatible Steam library are your priorities. Choose a gaming PC when you need broader Windows compatibility, higher frame rates, VR, extensive modding, unusual peripherals or room to upgrade. Start with the games you actually play and the screen you want to use; the hardware decision follows from those two answers.

Start with a library audit, not a product list

A “gaming PC” and a Steam Deck are not interchangeable targets. A Deck is a fixed, low-power handheld with a 1280×800 display. A desktop can be built around anything from 1080p to 4K, ultrawide or VR, with components selected for a particular frame-rate goal. Your must-play games determine whether the handheld’s software layer and performance are sufficient; your display determines how much PC hardware you need.

1. Divide your games into three lists

  1. Must-play: games that must work on the new system without relying on another computer.
  2. Nice-to-have: titles you would like to play locally, but could postpone, configure manually or stream.
  3. Stream candidates: demanding games that can remain installed on an existing PC and be streamed to a Deck, television or another client.

2. Record the requirements that a store page may not show

For each must-play title, note its launcher, anti-cheat system, controller expectations, minimum readable text size, storage footprint, desired frame rate and whether you use mods. Also record whether you need a keyboard and mouse, a racing wheel, a flight stick, a capture card, local multiplayer accessories or a Windows-only companion application. These details can matter more than the game’s nominal system requirements.

3. Define the output you will actually use

Write down one target rather than saying “good graphics.” Typical targets are handheld 1280×800, 1080p, 1440p, ultrawide, 4K or VR. Add a frame-rate expectation such as 30, 60, 120 or 144 frames per second. A Deck is designed around a small integrated screen and efficient power use; a desktop aimed at 4K/144 Hz or VR needs substantially more graphics headroom.

How Steam Deck compatibility labels work

Valve’s Deck Verified system uses four categories to indicate how well games work on Steam Deck. The badge is game-specific, not a guarantee that every title in a franchise behaves the same way.

Badge What it means in practice What you should still check
Verified Works well by default on Deck. Text size, online-service rules, mod support and performance in your preferred settings.
Playable Runs with one or more manual adjustments. Which adjustment is required: an on-screen keyboard, control remapping, launcher interaction, graphics setting or another workaround.
Unsupported Valve does not currently consider it playable on Deck. Whether a later update changed the status and whether streaming is a practical alternative.
No badge or unreviewed Valve has not provided a current compatibility conclusion. Community reports, the game’s launcher and anti-cheat requirements; treat the result as uncertain.

Open the Steam store or library page for every must-play game and read the detailed compatibility notes rather than relying only on the colored badge. A Verified game can still have small text, an awkward launcher or a performance profile you dislike. A Playable game may be perfectly acceptable if you are comfortable changing one setting, while an unreviewed title may work well but require more investigation.

What the Steam Deck OLED provides

Valve lists the OLED model with a 6-nanometer AMD APU combining a Zen 2 four-core/eight-thread CPU and RDNA 2 graphics. It has 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory, 512 GB or 1 TB of NVMe storage and a high-speed microSD slot for expansion. The integrated screen is a 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED panel with refresh rates up to 90 Hz. Wireless connectivity includes Wi‑Fi 6E. Valve rates the 50 Wh battery for approximately 3–12 hours, depending on the game, brightness, frame rate and other settings.

Steam Deck OLED specification Listed value Why it matters to a library owner
APU process 6 nm Designed for handheld efficiency rather than desktop-class sustained power.
CPU Zen 2, 4 cores / 8 threads Suitable for the Deck’s performance envelope; very CPU-heavy simulations may favor a desktop.
Graphics RDNA 2 integrated graphics Shares the handheld’s power and thermal budget instead of using a separate desktop graphics card.
Memory 16 GB LPDDR5 Fixed system memory shared by the CPU and graphics; there is no desktop-style memory upgrade path.
Internal storage 512 GB or 1 TB NVMe Faster primary storage, but a large library can consume it quickly.
Expansion High-speed microSD slot Convenient for additional games; select a card intended for sustained application performance.
Display 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED, up to 90 Hz Games are rendered for a modest resolution; the OLED panel improves contrast and viewing experience.
Wireless Wi‑Fi 6E Useful for downloads and game streaming when the rest of the network supports it.
Battery rating 50 Wh; about 3–12 hours according to Valve Actual life varies widely with game load, brightness, frame limit and wireless use.

The OLED model’s display, battery and storage improvements make it attractive for travel and couch play, but they do not remove the compatibility test. A must-play game that depends on an unsupported launcher or anti-cheat system remains a poor fit regardless of the screen.

When a Steam Deck is the better choice

Portable and immediate play

The Deck is self-contained: controls, screen, speakers, battery and operating system are in one device. You can pause a game, suspend the system and resume later without rebuilding a desktop setup. That convenience is valuable for commuting, travel, bed or sofa play, and short sessions where turning on a monitor and arranging peripherals would be friction.

A library dominated by Verified and straightforward Playable games

If your main games have reliable Deck badges and do not require a launcher workflow, anti-cheat exception or precise mouse input, the console-like SteamOS interface can be simpler than maintaining a Windows desktop. Check the notes for each title before buying; the pattern across your must-play list matters more than the number of compatible games in your account.

Moderate resolution and sensible frame-rate goals

At 1280×800, many games need less rendering work than they would at 1440p or 4K. Setting a frame-rate cap and using the game’s recommended preset can reduce heat and extend battery life. The Deck is not the right tool if your satisfaction depends on maximum ray-tracing settings or a high-refresh external monitor.

Expansion through removable storage

The microSD slot lets you keep a larger library without replacing the primary drive. Organize less frequently played games on the card and reserve internal NVMe storage for titles that benefit from faster loading or for shader and compatibility data. Keep backups of saves that are not synchronized through Steam Cloud.

When a gaming PC is the safer choice

Windows-only launchers and anti-cheat

A desktop running Windows generally supports a wider range of launchers, multiplayer anti-cheat implementations and peripheral drivers. If several must-play games require a separate launcher, kernel-level anti-cheat, a publisher account flow or software that does not behave under SteamOS, a PC avoids making each title a compatibility project. Confirm the current requirements for the exact game; support can change with updates.

High-refresh, ultrawide, 4K or VR output

A desktop can use a higher-power processor, a separate graphics card and larger cooling hardware. That enables higher frame rates, more demanding visual settings and the multiple displays or headset output that a handheld cannot provide at the same level. Build for the output you named in your audit, not for an undefined “gaming” tier.

Heavy modding and specialist peripherals

Large mod collections may require Windows utilities, scripting tools, load-order managers or substantial storage. A keyboard-and-mouse competitive game, simulator, racing wheel or flight stick may also be easier to configure on a desktop. The PC’s USB ports, internal expansion and software ecosystem provide more options when the game is not designed around a gamepad.

Streaming, recording and multitasking

If you record gameplay, run a camera and microphone, encode a stream, host a server or keep other applications open while playing, desktop components provide more sustained CPU, GPU and memory capacity. Size those workloads together with the game rather than assuming a model advertised for gaming will have enough headroom.

How to size the gaming PC

There is no single correct specification because the same game can require very different hardware at 1080p and 4K. Use the hardest game in your must-play list as the anchor, then verify its recommended requirements for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Allow headroom for patches, background applications and the next games you expect to buy.

Target Priorities when choosing parts Typical reasons to move up a tier
1080p, around 60 Hz Balanced mid-range CPU and graphics card, 16 GB or more memory, and an SSD. CPU-heavy strategy games, extensive mods, streaming or a high-refresh monitor.
1440p, 60–144 Hz More graphics headroom, a strong modern CPU and 16–32 GB memory depending on the games and other applications. Ray tracing, competitive frame rates, ultrawide resolution or recording while playing.
Ultrawide Graphics performance scales with the additional horizontal pixels; confirm the exact panel resolution. High refresh rate, maximum settings or games with demanding volumetric effects.
4K A high-end graphics solution, adequate video memory and a CPU that will not bottleneck the chosen frame rate. Ray tracing, 4K high-refresh panels or a desire to avoid aggressive upscaling.
VR Meet the headset’s current GPU, CPU, USB and display requirements, with margin for the specific simulator or game. High-resolution headsets, demanding flight or racing simulations and wireless headset streaming.

Choose an NVMe SSD large enough for the operating system, applications and several large games, then leave free space for updates. Desktop cases and motherboards often provide additional drive, memory and graphics-card upgrade paths; check the exact parts rather than assuming every prebuilt has room. A monitor, keyboard, mouse, controller, headset, operating-system license where applicable and reliable network connection belong in the budget.

For the Deck, add a microSD card if your library exceeds internal capacity, and add a dock or USB‑C hub if you need a monitor, television, Ethernet or several peripherals. A case, charger replacement, external keyboard and mouse, controller and headset may also be relevant to your use.

For a desktop, total the tower, monitor, operating-system needs, keyboard, mouse, controller, headset, speakers, Wi‑Fi or Ethernet hardware and any storage upgrade. A seemingly cheaper tower can cost more after adding a suitable 1440p or 4K display and the accessories needed to use it. Conversely, a desktop may be the better long-term value if you would otherwise buy a Deck, a dock, a monitor and a separate PC for incompatible games.

Use a decision matrix for borderline libraries

Streaming from an existing PC: the hybrid route

Valve’s Steam Link support allows a Steam library on a PC to be streamed to a television or another client on the home network, using the host computer’s processing power. This can give you handheld or living-room access without installing the most demanding games locally.

What must be in place

  • A host PC capable of running the game at the desired settings.
  • A client device such as a Deck or television app with compatible controls.
  • A stable, low-latency home network; wired Ethernet for the host is often preferable.
  • Controller mappings that match the game, especially for titles designed around keyboard and mouse.

What streaming does not solve

Streaming does not make an incompatible game compatible with SteamOS; the game still runs on the host, and the client only receives video and sends input. Network congestion, wireless interference, encoder load and distance can add delay or reduce image quality. Fast competitive games and rhythm games are less forgiving of latency than turn-based or single-player titles. Test the exact room, network and controller before treating streaming as your only way to play.

Setup checklists

Before buying a Steam Deck

  • Check the current Deck badge and detailed notes for every must-play title.
  • Confirm that launchers, anti-cheat, mods and text size meet your tolerance for manual work.
  • Estimate storage using installed sizes plus update space; choose 512 GB or 1 TB and a microSD card accordingly.
  • Decide whether you need a dock or USB‑C hub for a television, monitor, Ethernet or peripherals.
  • Set a realistic battery and frame-rate expectation for the games you play most.

Before buying or building a gaming PC

  • Pick the target resolution, refresh rate and VR requirement first.
  • Size the CPU and graphics card for the hardest game, not the easiest one.
  • Include memory, SSD capacity, power supply, cooling and case airflow in the specification.
  • Budget for the monitor and peripherals that make the system usable.
  • Check that the motherboard and case provide the expansion and upgrade paths you expect.

Troubleshoot the common decision failures

“My game is Verified, but it feels poor.”

Read the detailed note and test the game’s frame-rate cap, graphics preset, display scaling and controller layout. “Verified” means it works well by default, not that it runs at desktop settings or a particular frame rate. If the problem is text size or a launcher interaction, the title may still be acceptable after one configuration change; if performance remains below your target, stream or use a PC.

  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
  • OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

“My Playable game will not launch.”

Check for a launcher sign-in, an anti-cheat update or a required compatibility component. Confirm that the badge and notes are current, because game updates can change behavior. Keep a PC or streaming option for a must-play title that repeatedly depends on unsupported software.

“The Deck storage filled immediately.”

Move less-played games to a high-speed microSD card, uninstall unused downloads and reserve internal space for the titles that benefit from it. Cloud saves do not necessarily cover every game, so verify save locations before removing an installation.

“Streaming has visible delay.”

Connect the host by Ethernet where possible, reduce competing network traffic, move the client closer to the access point and lower the stream resolution or bandwidth until frame delivery is stable. If input delay remains unacceptable for the game, install it locally on compatible hardware instead.

Make the final choice

Buy the Steam Deck OLED when your must-play list is largely Verified or well-behaved Playable, your preferred screen is the handheld itself or a television, and portability and quick resume are worth more than maximum performance. Buy or build a gaming PC when even a few essential games require Windows-specific software, VR, high-refresh or ultrawide output, extensive mods, specialist peripherals or sustained recording and multitasking. If you already own a capable PC, Steam Link can combine that performance with a Deck’s portable controls, provided your network and latency are good enough for the games you play.
