Choose a snow blower to match your usual snow, driveway surface and slope, and available storage—not simply the widest machine you can afford. A small, level, paved driveway with lighter snow may suit a single-stage model; deeper snow, gravel, or a larger driveway often calls for two-stage capacity. Wide areas that regularly get heavy, wet snow may justify a three-stage machine. These are starting points, not guarantees: confirm the specific model’s limits and surface requirements in its specifications and owner’s manual.

Start with the driveway and the snow you actually get

Before comparing machines, measure the driveway and note the conditions that make clearing difficult. Consumer Reports says a snow blower can be a necessity or a luxury depending on local snowfall and the area to clear; for a short driveway or infrequent storms, a shovel or another approach may be enough (Consumer Reports buying guide, updated March 9, 2026).

  • Measure the driveway’s length and width, plus gate openings, storage space, and tight turning areas.
  • Record typical snow depth and whether it is usually light and powdery, wet, or compacted. Include plow piles at the driveway entrance.
  • Note whether the surface is paved, gravel, or a mix, and whether the drive is sloped or uneven.
  • Consider where snow can be thrown, how far it must travel, and whether you can safely maneuver a heavier machine.

Use those observations to narrow the stage type, then compare individual models’ clearing width and depth, surface guidance, drive system, weight, power source, and storage dimensions.

Choose a stage type that fits your conditions

“Stage” describes how the machine gathers and moves snow. A single-stage blower uses its auger to gather and discharge snow. A two-stage model adds an impeller to help move snow through the chute. A three-stage design adds an accelerator that moves snow toward the impeller. More stages generally mean greater capacity, but also more size, weight, and storage demand.

Type Typical fit in Consumer Reports’ guide Trade-offs and checks
Single-stage Level, paved drives with lighter snow; the guide describes gas models for midsized paved areas and snow up to 9 inches. Often manually pushed; limited in deeper or heavier snow and a poor choice for gravel, where the low auger can pick up stones. Check the model’s actual depth limit and clearing width.
Two-stage Longer or wider drives; gas models are described for snow up to roughly 16 inches. The auger sits above the ground, making this type a better fit for gravel. Heavier and bulkier than small machines. Check width, drive system, chute reach, and access to storage. Consumer Reports says many battery two-stage models are most effective at depths of 12 inches or less, even if a model lists a higher maximum.
Three-stage Wide areas with heavy, wet snow; the guide describes gas models for about 18 inches or more. Typically the heaviest and most storage-intensive option. Consider it when those conditions are regular, and verify the exact model’s capacity and dimensions.

The depth figures are broad descriptions in Consumer Reports’ guide, not guarantees for every machine. Snow type, model design, and operating conditions matter; consult the specifications and manual rather than treating a category-level figure as a promise.

When surface and slope decide the choice

A single-stage blower sits close to the ground, so gravel is a poor match: it may pick up stones. Two-stage machines keep the auger off the ground and are generally better suited to gravel. For steep or uneven drives, a track-driven two-stage model can offer more traction, but tracks are harder to turn on level ground. A track-driven machine may also leave a layer of snow instead of clearing down to the surface. Older Consumer Reports driveway guidance discusses these trade-offs; confirm that the current model is approved for your surface and follow its manual (Consumer Reports driveway guidance).

Pick a power source you can live with

Power source Why it may suit you What to account for
Gas Consumer Reports describes gas machines as generally faster-clearing and able to throw snow farther. Many models offer electric start. Requires fuel and engine maintenance. Follow the model’s fueling, storage, and maintenance instructions.
Battery Starts without gas and avoids gas-engine maintenance; some brands share batteries across outdoor tools in the same product line. Check battery compatibility, runtime expectations, and the model’s snow-depth limits. Consumer Reports says top gas blowers can clear faster; many battery two-stage models are most effective in depths of 12 inches or less.
Corded electric Can work for small areas such as decks and patios. The extension cord restricts reach and movement. Consumer Reports characterizes corded models as light-duty, not high-capacity driveway machines.

Balance clearing width, traction, and maneuverability

A wider clearing path can mean fewer passes, but wider machines are often heavier and need more room to turn and store. If you need two-stage capacity but have limited storage, compare compact two-stage models instead of assuming the widest option is best. Check the machine’s width against doors and gates, and account for its turning space and storage footprint.

Most snow blowers use wheels. On two- and three-stage models, powered wheels can help move a machine across a larger area. Tracks can improve traction on hills and uneven ground, while making turns more difficult on level terrain. Compare practical features that matter in your conditions:

Check the fit before you buy

  1. Match capacity to normal conditions. Use your usual snow depth, wetness, driveway size, and plow piles to choose a stage category. If heavy snow is exceptional rather than routine, weigh that against the added size and storage burden of a higher-capacity machine.
  2. Confirm the surface and slope fit. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for paved or gravel surfaces and for your driveway’s grade. Do not assume a general category recommendation overrides the manual.
  3. Compare model-specific limits. Check stated clearing width and depth, chute control and reach, drive system, and machine weight. A broad stage-type range is not a substitute for a model’s specifications.
  4. Test the practical footprint on paper. Compare the machine’s dimensions with gates, doors, turning areas, and storage space. Include room to maneuver, not just the width of the storage opening.
  5. Choose power and maintenance deliberately. Consider access to charging or fuel, battery-platform compatibility, and the upkeep described in the manual.

Use and maintain it safely

Never put a hand into the auger or chute to remove a clog. Stop the machine using the shutdown procedure in its manual, then use a cleanout tool or long stick. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s January 12, 1990 release states: “If you use a snow thrower, safety experts warn you to stop the engine and use a long stick to unclog wet snow and debris from the machine instead of your hands” (CPSC safety release).

The CPSC reported in a December 2023 safety release that more than 4,200 snow blower-related injuries were treated in emergency rooms in 2021; over 40 percent involved the wrist, hand, or finger (CPSC safety release). Follow these precautions:

  • Never run a gas-powered blower in an enclosed area. Its exhaust contains carbon monoxide.
  • Do not add gasoline to a running or hot engine.
  • Follow the owner’s manual for shutdown, adjustments, and maintenance.

Consumer Reports recommends keeping spare belts and shear pins available. On a two-stage machine, shear pins are designed to break if the auger hits something too hard, protecting the engine and transmission. Buy replacements specified for the exact model; parts are not universally interchangeable. For off-season storage, the guide recommends a cool, dry location and, as applicable to the model, removing the battery or draining excess fuel or adding stabilizer (Consumer Reports buying guide).
