Before buying, check its network connection, any hub or Thread requirement, and the setup steps. Matter can make control across platforms possible, but its label alone does not guarantee that every platform supports every device type or feature.
Start with the system you want to use
Write down the smart home apps, voice assistants and hubs or controllers already in use. Then decide which household members and apps need to control the new device. A product may work with a brand’s app but not with the platform you rely on for routines, voice control or shared access.
Check the platform owner’s current compatibility information for the exact model and device type. Google says existing “Works with Google Home” devices remain supported, but confirm the product in its current compatible smart home devices list. For Alexa, check the manufacturer’s compatibility details and Amazon’s guidance for connecting smart home devices. For Apple Home, check whether the accessory supports Apple Home, HomeKit or Matter, as appropriate; Apple’s accessory setup guidance explains what to verify.
Do not rely on a general claim that a brand or product family works with your ecosystem. Compatibility can vary by model and device category. If a listing carries a “Works with” badge, use it as a lead and confirm the model against the platform’s current information.

Check that the platform supports the device type and features you need
Compatibility is not always all-or-nothing. A platform may support a device category while exposing only some of the device’s controls or features. Check both the platform’s list of supported device types and the manufacturer’s documentation for the specific model. Confirm that the functions your household cares about—such as its relevant controls or automations—are available in the app you plan to use.
Match the device’s connection to your network
Read the model’s network requirements and compare them with your home setup. Matter devices can communicate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread; the device’s own specifications determine which connection it uses. Google’s Matter preparation guidance describes these connection options.

Pay particular attention to Wi-Fi band requirements. Amazon says most smart home devices that connect over Wi-Fi use 2.4 GHz. Check the device’s instructions and your router configuration before buying; do not assume that a device will connect simply because your home has Wi-Fi. Amazon’s Alexa connection guidance also advises checking compatibility and network setup.
Find out whether you need a hub or Thread support
Some devices connect directly to Wi-Fi, while others use Thread or need a compatible hub or controller. Google notes that some Matter devices need a hub that supports Wi-Fi, Thread or both. Check whether a speaker, display or hub you already own supplies the required capability before purchasing additional hardware. A Matter label by itself does not mean you need a new hub—or that your existing equipment will work as one.

Confirm the exact requirement in the device and platform documentation. Google’s Matter guidance explains the network options, while its compatible-device information identifies platform-specific details. Buy another hub only if the selected device and intended platform require a capability your current setup lacks.
Account for Matter’s limits and setup steps
Matter can let a device be controlled from multiple Matter-certified apps through multi-admin, but it does not make every platform feature-identical. Platforms may support device categories at different times. If you plan to use the device in more than one app, verify that each intended app currently supports its device type and the specific functions you need. Google describes multi-admin and category support in its Matter device setup and control guidance.

Also check whether setup requires the manufacturer’s app or account, a firmware or software update, or extra hardware. Apple recommends checking these requirements when an accessory cannot be added to Home. A device may need its manufacturer app for initial setup even if you intend to control it afterward through another smart home app. See Apple’s accessory troubleshooting steps and the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions.

- List what is already in the home. Note the smart home apps, voice assistants, hubs and controllers you use.
- Decide who and what must control the device. Identify the apps household members need, including any platform required for routines or voice control.
- Verify the exact model. Search the platform owner’s official compatibility information for the model and device type; confirm any “Works with” claim against the current listing.
- Check the connection. Find out whether the device uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Thread or another radio, then confirm your network can meet its requirements, including the Wi-Fi band if specified.
- Check hub and Thread needs. Determine whether the device or platform needs a hub, controller or Thread capability, and whether equipment you already own provides it.
- Read the setup requirements. Look for required apps, accounts, firmware updates, software versions and extra hardware.
- Verify Matter support app by app. If relying on Matter for control from multiple platforms, confirm each app supports the device category and the features you want.
If any requirement is unclear, check the manufacturer’s current documentation for the exact model before purchasing. Compatibility at the brand level is not a substitute for confirming the model, connection and setup path.
