Choose Immich when phone backup, sharing and a modern timeline are your priorities; choose PhotoPrism when browser-first access, metadata-rich search, WebDAV or PhotoSync fit your workflow; investigate Nextcloud Photos or Memories if you already run Nextcloud, but verify its current app documentation before treating it as an equivalent option. No current official feature-by-feature result for Nextcloud Photos is published, so no honest three-way winner can be declared.
The more important decision is not a popularity contest. It is whether the gallery can ingest your phones, preserve your existing files, search the metadata you care about, run on your server and coexist with a real backup plan.
Start with the workflow, not the brand
A self-hosted photo gallery is an application running on hardware and storage that you control. It normally indexes originals, creates thumbnails, extracts metadata and presents a web or mobile interface. Some products also upload new photos from a phone, recognize faces, classify scenes, provide maps and create share links. Those features are useful, but they do not replace the original files or an independent backup.

These answers usually narrow the choice more reliably than a feature checklist.
Immich, PhotoPrism and Nextcloud Photos at a glance
| Decision area | Immich | PhotoPrism | Nextcloud Photos or Memories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone backup | Official mobile apps back up photos and videos. | Compatible apps such as PhotoSync are documented for background phone backup. | No current official capability listing was published. |
| Organization and discovery | Timeline, albums, faces, map, tags and phrase-based Smart Search are listed. | Combined search filters, automatic content and location labels, face recognition and metadata extraction are listed. | No current official feature set was published. |
| Existing files | External libraries index files in existing filesystem paths after a scan. | Metadata extraction and WebDAV access are documented. | No current official behavior was published. |
| Published host guidance | At least 6 GB RAM and two CPU cores; 8 GB and four cores recommended. Immich estimates thumbnails and transcoded video may add 10–20% to library size on average. | At least two CPU cores, 3 GB physical RAM and 4 GB swap; local SSD storage benefits indexing. | No current official requirements were published. |
| Backup warning | Back up the database and copies of uploaded photos and videos; an automatic database backup alone is insufficient. | No equivalent backup policy is published in the available official guidance. | No current official policy was published. |
The figures are separate project recommendations, not an apples-to-apples speed test. Library size, file formats, machine-learning jobs, concurrent users, storage latency and configuration can change the result.
When Immich is the better fit
Phone-first capture and video backup
Immich’s documented mobile apps back up photos and videos, making it a natural shortlist choice when the phone is the primary camera. The project also lists multiple users, partner sharing and public links, so a household can keep private libraries while sharing selected items.
Gallery-oriented organization
The feature list includes a timeline, albums, face recognition, map views, tags, RAW viewing and phrase-based Smart Search. These are project-described capabilities, not independent accuracy measurements. Treat recognition and search as aids to discovery rather than proof that every person, place or object will be identified correctly.
Using an existing archive with an external library
Immich can index files that remain in an external filesystem path instead of copying them into its upload storage. The gallery displays those assets after a scan. If files change outside Immich, run another scan; automatic filesystem watching is documented as experimental and may not work on network drives.
There is an important write-back limitation: metadata edits made to an externally stored asset inside Immich remain in Immich and are not written to the original file. If your long-term workflow depends on EXIF or XMP changes being stored beside or inside the original, keep those edits in a metadata-capable application and rescan as needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesImmich storage planning
Immich’s current requirements page lists, as of October 13, 2026, 6 GB RAM and two CPU cores as a minimum, with 8 GB RAM and four cores recommended. It recommends a Unix-compatible filesystem and notes that stable PostgreSQL performance matters. Thumbnail generation and transcoded video can increase the photo-library footprint by 10–20% on average, so leave capacity beyond the size of your originals.
Immich backup responsibilities
Immich’s documentation gives an unusually direct warning: “Do not use it as the only way to store your photos and videos!” Its backup guidance says a complete plan includes the database and copies of uploaded photos and videos. An automated database backup protects application records, but it does not recreate missing media files; use a separate backup tool and keep at least one additional copy of the originals.

When PhotoPrism is the better fit
Browser-first access on many devices
PhotoPrism documents a progressive web app for phones, tablets and desktops. A PWA can be installed from a browser and used across platforms without requiring a traditional desktop client, which suits households that primarily browse from computers or tablets.
Metadata-rich search
Its feature documentation lists combined search filters, automatic content and location labels, face recognition, and EXIF and XMP metadata extraction. It also documents support for Google Photos JSON metadata. If your archive has carefully maintained metadata or you need several filters together, this emphasis may fit better than a purely folder-oriented workflow.

PhotoPrism names compatible applications such as PhotoSync for background phone backup. It also documents WebDAV access through desktop clients. Confirm that the particular phone application and client you plan to use support your operating system and desired background behavior; compatibility is not the same as a built-in first-party mobile uploader.
PhotoPrism host planning
PhotoPrism’s 2026 setup guidance specifies a 64-bit host with at least two CPU cores, 3 GB of physical memory and at least 4 GB of swap. It says local SSD storage benefits indexing, particularly for the database and cache. RAW files and high-resolution panoramas may require additional swap or memory. These are published setup recommendations, not a guarantee of performance for a particular library.
What can—and cannot—be concluded about Nextcloud Photos
The current official Nextcloud administration material does not explain the Photos or Memories app feature set in enough detail to verify phone backup, facial recognition, search behavior, storage requirements or performance. That means you should not infer that Nextcloud matches or trails either specialist gallery from the evidence here.
If you already operate Nextcloud for files, calendars or collaboration, Photos or Memories may still be worth investigating because keeping one platform can simplify accounts and storage permissions. Before choosing it, read the current app documentation for your installed Nextcloud version and confirm:
- which app (Photos, Memories or another extension) is maintained for your release;
- whether automatic mobile upload covers both photos and videos;
- how faces, labels, maps and search are implemented;
- where thumbnails, previews and indexing data are stored;
- how sharing links and permissions interact with your existing Nextcloud users; and
- what backup and recovery procedure the app requires.
Until those points are verified, describe Nextcloud as an option to evaluate rather than a measured third competitor.
Compare the choices by the work you need to do
If your highest priority is automatic phone backup
Put Immich first on your shortlist because its own mobile apps explicitly back up photos and videos. Put PhotoPrism alongside it if using a compatible uploader such as PhotoSync is acceptable. For Nextcloud, verify the current app and mobile workflow before migrating a phone library.

If you already have years of files in folders
Immich’s external-library mode can index those filesystem paths without moving the originals, but plan for rescans and remember that Immich’s metadata edits do not update the source files. PhotoPrism’s documented metadata extraction and WebDAV access may suit an archive managed by other desktop tools. In either case, test a copy of your folder tree before pointing the application at the only copy.
If search and metadata are central
Immich lists Smart Search, tags, faces and maps. PhotoPrism lists combined filters, automatic labels, face recognition and EXIF/XMP extraction. Choose according to the fields you actually maintain—date, camera, location, caption, people or keywords—and test representative files, including RAW images, edited JPEGs and videos. Neither project’s feature list establishes comparative recognition accuracy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If sharing is the main requirement
Immich explicitly lists multiple users, partner sharing and public links. For PhotoPrism and Nextcloud, confirm the exact sharing controls in the version you will deploy rather than assuming parity from the existence of a web gallery.
If you need WebDAV or a PWA
PhotoPrism documents both a progressive web app and WebDAV access through desktop clients. Those are concrete reasons to favor it when browser installation and file-oriented integration matter. Immich’s documented strengths are more centered on its gallery and mobile backup workflow.
Plan hardware and storage without misleading comparisons
Start with the host you actually have, then compare it with each project’s published baseline:
| Resource | Immich guidance | PhotoPrism guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | Two cores minimum; four recommended. | Two cores minimum. | Core counts alone do not predict indexing time or responsiveness. |
| Memory | 6 GB minimum; 8 GB recommended. | 3 GB physical memory minimum. | PhotoPrism also calls for swap; workloads and library contents matter. |
| Swap | No equivalent figure in the cited requirements. | At least 4 GB. | RAW files and large panoramas may need more PhotoPrism memory or swap. |
| Storage overhead | Thumbnails and transcoded video may add 10–20% on average. | No equivalent percentage was stated. | Reserve space for originals, previews, databases and future growth. |
| Fast storage | Stable PostgreSQL performance is emphasized. | Local SSD is recommended for the database and cache. | Keep active database/cache data on responsive storage when possible. |
Use these numbers as deployment gates, not performance promises. A small library on a modern SSD can behave very differently from a large mixed-format archive on a busy network disk. Account for simultaneous indexing, video transcoding, face analysis and other services on the host.
A practical selection procedure
- Inventory the originals. Record total bytes, file count, video proportion, RAW formats, folder layout and the locations of any existing backups.
- Define the ingest path. Decide whether phones upload directly, use a compatible third-party uploader, or continue syncing into a folder that the gallery indexes.
- Choose the metadata owner. If the gallery must write changes back to files, verify that behavior before importing the archive. Immich external-library edits stay inside Immich.
- Measure the host against published guidance. Check available RAM, CPU cores, swap, filesystem and whether the database/cache can use SSD storage.
- Deploy a pilot with copies. Import a representative sample containing photos, videos, RAW files, panoramas, sidecars and duplicate filenames. Do not make the pilot your only copy.
- Exercise the daily workflow. Back up a new phone photo, search by a known date and location, create an album, share one item, edit metadata and rescan an externally changed file.
- Test recovery before committing. Restore the database and several original media files to a separate location. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a demonstrated recovery plan.
- Estimate growth. Add expected annual phone uploads, video, previews and any Immich overhead to the current library, then reserve room for a second copy.
Backup and migration rules that apply whichever gallery you choose
Keep originals independent of the application
Store the original photos and videos in a filesystem location covered by your backup system. For Immich uploads, back up the uploaded media as well as the database. Do not rely on a database dump to reconstruct binary files.
Use more than one copy
A practical arrangement is a primary library, a separate local or NAS backup and an additional copy kept offline or in another location. The exact media and retention policy depends on your risk tolerance, but the second copy must not disappear when the server fails.

Document the rebuild
Write down the application version, container or package configuration, storage paths, database location, account recovery method and the command or procedure used to restore. This turns a replacement server from an emergency research project into a repeatable task.
Common failure modes
The gallery shows an old version of an external file
For Immich external libraries, run a scan after changing files outside the application. Do not assume experimental filesystem watching will notice changes, especially when the files are on a network drive.
Metadata appears in the gallery but not in the file
That is expected for metadata edits made to an Immich external asset. Keep authoritative metadata in the original file or its sidecar using a tool that writes it, then rescan the library.
Indexing fills the disk
Check previews, thumbnails, transcoded video, database growth and temporary files. Immich’s published estimate of a 10–20% average increase covers thumbnails and transcoded video, but your formats and settings may differ. Expand storage before the original-media volume reaches capacity.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Recognition or search is disappointing
Check that indexing and machine-learning jobs completed, then test files with reliable dates, GPS data and readable metadata. Treat labels and face matches as probabilistic assistance and retain a folder, date or keyword strategy that remains useful when automation is wrong.
The server meets the minimum but feels slow
Minimum requirements do not account for every concurrent workload. Move database and cache data to faster storage where the project recommends it, reduce simultaneous indexing or transcoding, and check whether another service is consuming CPU, memory or disk I/O.
Bottom-line decision
Pick Immich when a first-party mobile backup flow, video support, timeline browsing, sharing and gallery features outweigh the need for external-file metadata write-back. Budget for its published 6–8 GB RAM guidance, possible 10–20% preview/transcode overhead and a separate media backup.
Pick PhotoPrism when a browser-installed PWA, combined metadata search, automatic labels, PhotoSync-compatible phone backup or WebDAV access best matches how you work. Plan around its published 2-core, 3 GB RAM and 4 GB swap baseline, with SSD storage for database and cache where possible.
Choose Nextcloud Photos or Memories only after checking the current documentation for your Nextcloud release and confirming the mobile, search, sharing, storage and recovery features you need. Existing Nextcloud users may value platform consolidation, but no current official documentation supports ranking it against Immich or PhotoPrism.
