For business or bulk retirements, start with a currently certified facility and verify its process scope; for a household’s few devices, check local collection programs and battery instructions. Robots can contain unusual batteries or commercial components, so confirm handling with the manufacturer and local waste authority rather than assuming ordinary electronics rules apply.
Start with the equipment and the outcome you need
Before contacting providers, make a short inventory. Include the device type and model, approximate quantity, condition, storage media, and battery type if known. Note whether you want repair or reuse, secure data sanitization, pickup of a bulk lot, or materials recovery. For robots and specialty or industrial equipment, include unusual sensors, components, and battery details, then ask the manufacturer or local waste authority about special handling.
This matters because acceptance and handling depend on location and device. A general electronics collection program may not accept every robot, battery, or commercial system.

Businesses, government, and bulk retirement
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends using certified electronics recyclers to manage unwanted used electronics. EPA identifies R2 and e-Stewards as accredited third-party certification standards that assess environmental, worker health and safety, and security practices, and address downstream handling and data destruction. Start with their facility directories, but verify the actual site and services for your job; a directory listing is not an EPA endorsement.

Households with a few devices
EPA points households to local and state recycling facilities and collection programs. Check current accepted-item lists, fees, and battery directions before making a trip. EPA links to programs including Greener Gadgets and Call2Recycle as informational resources, not endorsements.
Verify certification and process scope
Certification is a useful screening step, not a complete buying decision. Use the facility locators linked from EPA’s certified electronics recyclers page, and confirm that the facility handling your equipment is currently listed. RIOS also has a recycler finder with locations, certifications, and service categories: RIOS Recycler Finder.

Do not assume a certification label means every site performs every service. SERI explains that R2v3 has Core requirements for all certified facilities and additional process requirements that apply according to the activities a facility performs. Ask which of these are relevant to your equipment and job:
- Appendix A: downstream recycling chain management.
- Appendix B: data sanitization.
- Appendix C: testing and repair for reuse.
- Appendix E: materials recovery.
See SERI’s R2v3 overview for details. e-Stewards’ standard overview describes downstream-vendor due diligence, controls around reuse and refurbishment, and compliance with Basel Convention rules for transboundary movement. It identifies Version 4.1 and notes that current sanctioned interpretations also apply; check current documents and processor listings when procuring service: e-Stewards standard overview.

EPA describes both standards as ways to assess environmental, worker health and safety, and security practices. The agency’s study was not designed to establish that one standard is universally better. Compare the specific facility, relevant process scope, and contract fit instead. The study’s interviews and facility observations ran from March 2013 through May 2015; its fact sheet cautions that the observed audits represented a small percentage of U.S. certified facilities and auditors, so those findings are not a current measure of industry performance. Compare providers on the details that affect your handoff
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Facility and scope | Which facility will collect or process the equipment? Is it currently listed? Which relevant R2 process requirements or e-Stewards certification apply? |
| Accepted material | Are these device types, brands, condition states, batteries, accessories, and specialty components accepted? What is excluded? |
| Data protection | Will data be logically sanitized, devices physically destroyed, or can you choose either? What records are retained and delivered? |
| Downstream chain | Who transports and processes each material stream? How are downstream processors checked? Are exports involved, and how is compliance addressed? |
| Reuse and disposition | Could usable devices be repaired, refurbished, donated, or resold? Can you prohibit whole-device reuse or resale? |
| Logistics and records | What packing, drop-off or pickup, minimum-lot, and fee terms apply? Will you receive a receipt, inventory, data-destruction record, or disposition report? |

- Space Saving Profile - The Highboy bin is perfect for tight or compact spaces; its narrow design and sleek shape make it ideal for the kitchen, garage, office, or other areas where space is limited while still large enough for household recycling.
- Easy Bag Removal - This indoor or outdoor recycle bin was designed with a tapered shape and vented sides to make it simple to remove a trash bag. Eliminate the struggle to remove a full bag of waste. The recommended bag size for ideal use is 33 gallons.
- Dustpan Edge - Sweep debris directly into the slim trash can with a dustpan edge that eliminates the need for a separate dustpan, making it easy and efficient to clean. The waste container is also made with smooth plastic to ensure easy cleaning.
- Swing Top Lid – The Highboy comes with the premium feature for functionality; a swing top lid to conceal trash while also providing easy access to discard waste. Remove the lid to empty the receptacle and reattach it with ease.
- Easy to Carry - Designed with you in mind, the Highboy durable plastic recycling bin has sturdy pass-through handles on top and a hand groove on the bottom. This makes moving the heavy-duty garbage can easier than ever.
Set data-security requirements before devices leave your control
Ask the provider to specify the sanitization method, when it occurs, who has custody at each stage, and what proof you will receive. Distinguish logical erasure from physical destruction, and ask whether records identify individual devices by serial number. If your organization needs audit evidence, define the record type and tracking requirement in the contract; documentation practices are not identical across providers.
EPA says certified recyclers it discusses wipe laptops and keep erasure records. SERI’s R2v3 Appendix B describes enhanced controls for data sanitization, including device-level, software-generated sanitization records. Verify that the specific provider offers the service and records you require rather than treating certification alone as a service guarantee.

- PACK OF 6: Comes with 6 18 Gal Recycling Boxes for use in various areas of a home or business
- PCR: Made of post-consumer recycled resin for home or commercial recycling use
- BUILT-IN HANDLES: Enable easier lifting and carrying
- DESIGNED TO EASILY STACK: Designed to stack or nest for easy storage when not in use

Trace downstream handling and decide whether reuse is allowed
Ask who receives each stream after collection, how downstream processors are vetted, and what disposition information you will get. Find out whether any materials or devices are exported and how applicable requirements are addressed. If intact devices, components, or data-bearing media must not be reused, donated, or resold, make that restriction explicit in the contract. Reuse can extend a device’s useful life, but it should follow your organization’s security and disposition rules.
Prepare household devices and handle batteries safely
- Consider repair or upgrades before replacing a device.
- Delete personal information and follow the receiving program’s instructions for resetting or removing storage.
- Check whether batteries should be removed and recycled separately; follow the provider’s directions for built-in or damaged batteries rather than attempting unsafe disassembly.
- Keep lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them out of household garbage and recycling bins, as EPA advises.
- Check your state or community facility’s current rules before drop-off.
For a laptop delivered to an R2- or e-Stewards-certified recycler, EPA says the recycler will wipe it and that certified recyclers are regularly audited and keep data-erasure records. Confirm the service and documentation for your particular provider and handoff. EPA’s household guidance also reports historical U.S. Geological Survey estimates from 2006: recycling one million laptops was estimated to save electricity equivalent to the annual use of more than 3,500 U.S. homes; recycling one million cell phones was estimated to recover 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium. These are 2006 estimates reported by EPA, not current measurements. EPA electronics donation and recycling guidance.
