Choose the highest resolution and frame rate your encoder and internet connection can sustain steadily—not simply the highest setting available. Match the resolution, frame rate, and codec to YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate, leave the recommended 20% upload headroom, then test a representative stream and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube does not set a special resolution requirement for 24/7 streams.
Choose resolution by bitrate and stability
Resolution is only one part of the setting. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations depend on the combination of codec, resolution, and frame rate. The reference values below are for H.264 ingest, not video uploads; YouTube provides different recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. The figures were checked on 2026-10-03, and YouTube Help does not state a publication year for these recommendations.
| Ingest setting | H.264 minimum bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate | When it may suit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | A lower-bandwidth choice when the content does not need more detail or motion smoothness. |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | When 60 fps benefits the motion in the video and the setup sustains it reliably. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | When more image detail matters and the connection has capacity for the higher recommended rate. |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | When both higher detail and smoother motion are useful and the connection can sustain the rate. |
These are ingest recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or uninterrupted operation. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across different devices and network conditions; the ingest resolution does not mean every viewer receives only that resolution.
Check your upload capacity before choosing
YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Measure outbound performance under the conditions in which the stream will actually run, rather than relying only on an advertised connection speed. For example, an H.264 stream set to the 14 Mbps recommendation for 1080p30 needs more than 14 Mbps of available outbound capacity if you are also leaving YouTube’s recommended headroom.

- Include the full stream bitrate in your capacity check, including audio.
- If you use primary and backup streams, account for the upload load of both.
- Connection reliability matters as well as raw speed: a disruption can break the stream.
YouTube does not specify a 24/7-specific minimum speed, stability-test duration, or uptime threshold. Your own encoder, network route, and competing traffic determine what remains stable in practice.
A practical method for selecting a setting
- Identify the codec and frame rate. Use YouTube’s live encoder recommendations for the exact codec, resolution, and frame-rate combination you intend to send. Do not apply the H.264 figures above to an AV1 or H.265/HEVC encoder.
- Measure sustained outbound capacity. Check under realistic operating conditions and keep the planned total bitrate within capacity with 20% headroom. Include a backup stream if you send one.
- Test representative content. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. A static image or quiet segment alone may not reveal how the stream behaves with the content you will actually play.
- Monitor stream health and messages. Check YouTube’s stream-health information during the test and watch for issues rather than treating the chosen bitrate as a guarantee.
- Reduce the setting if the test is unstable. If the connection cannot sustain the recommended rate with headroom, try a lower resolution or frame rate and test again. This is a practical response to YouTube’s bitrate and reliability guidance, not an automatic YouTube fallback rule.
Decide whether 30 fps or 60 fps helps
Use 60 fps when the source’s motion benefits from it and the encoder and network can maintain it. For largely static visuals, slides, or slow-moving material, 30 fps may be adequate; the decision should reflect the actual content and test results. Compare frame rates at the same codec and resolution rather than assuming a setting’s demands from resolution alone: YouTube lists different recommended rates for 1080p30 and 1080p60.

Keep latency separate from resolution
Latency is a separate choice from resolution and frame rate. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, and it may matter less when you do not interact with viewers. Choose it according to whether timely interaction is important, then observe the stream under real viewing conditions. YouTube’s separate advice for 360-degree livestreaming—preferring 1440p or 2160p when supported—is specific to that format and should not be treated as a recommendation for ordinary streams.
