Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Compare neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) and samarium-cobalt (SmCo) against demagnetization risk, heat, corrosion, geometry, assembly, supply, and total system cost. The right choice depends on the application’s magnetic circuit and operating conditions; a generic grade recommendation is not enough.
Start with the application’s requirements
Before comparing magnet materials, define what the magnet must do and where it will operate. A motor, a sensor, and a loudspeaker impose different constraints, so a magnet that works well in one is not automatically suitable for another.
Record the real operating conditions
- Temperature: Establish the magnet’s minimum and maximum temperatures, including startup, stall, nearby heat sources, duty cycle, and credible fault conditions.
- Environment: Note humidity, washdown, chemicals, salt, and other corrosion exposure.
- Mechanical fit: Define the available space, mounting method, air gap, tolerances, and any assembly loads.
- Production needs: Check whether the required shape, coating, tolerance, samples, and repeatable supply are available. A supplier technical note treats these as part of high-temperature magnet selection, alongside magnetic performance and cost. Arnold’s high-temperature magnet selection note
Specify the magnetic result
For a motor, the design must meet its magnetic-output target while retaining enough resistance to the opposing fields that can demagnetize the magnet. For a sensor, specify the field at the active sensing element along its movement path, including the physical gap. The sensor and magnetic-circuit design—not a generic magnet-strength rule—determine the needed field. A sensor guide recommends placing a magnet close to the sensor where the mechanical design permits, but the exact requirement remains application-specific. Arnold’s sensor guide
For a loudspeaker, use driver-specific requirements
Do not assume a rare-earth magnet is always preferable for a speaker, or transfer motor and sensor grade advice directly to a loudspeaker. The available sources do not establish a speaker-specific grade or quantify speaker performance. Use the driver or assembly designer’s requirements and the magnet’s product data.

Compare NdFeB and SmCo at the actual operating temperature
NdFeB can provide high magnetic energy in a compact, lightweight design when temperature and environmental conditions permit. SmCo is a leading alternative when thermal stability or demanding environmental conditions matter more. The U.S. Department of Energy describes SmCo as more resistant to demagnetization at elevated temperatures than NdFeB, while noting NdFeB’s higher energy product can help reduce component size and weight under suitable temperature conditions. U.S. Department of Energy report on the rare-earth permanent magnet supply chain
Those are family-level tradeoffs, not universal temperature limits. The usable performance of a particular magnet depends on its grade, geometry, magnetic circuit, operating point, and temperature-dependent data. Arnold’s selection guidance frames the choice around maximum application temperature, required output at typical use temperature, and system cost. Arnold’s magnet selection guide

Select grade and geometry together
A grade name or maximum energy product alone does not establish the field in an assembled device. Ask the manufacturer for the full material data and check it against the planned magnetic circuit and operating conditions.
- Magnetic properties: Review residual induction, coercivity, intrinsic coercivity, and temperature behavior. These properties help establish both available output and resistance to demagnetization.
- Physical specification: Confirm shape, dimensions, tolerances, and magnetization direction. Discs, rods, and blocks are possible sensor-magnet forms, not universal recommendations. Arnold’s sensor guide
- Assembled magnetic circuit: Evaluate the magnet with the intended air gap and nearby steel. Geometry and the surrounding magnetic circuit affect whether the required field reaches the motor or sensing element.
- Operating point: Check the design’s load line against temperature and opposing fields rather than relying on a single headline material value.
Plan for corrosion, handling, and production
Match corrosion protection to the environment
For NdFeB in humid applications, Arnold recommends protective coatings and identifies epoxy and nickel-plated options. Verify that the selected coating suits the real exposure and assembly process; a coating does not make every grade appropriate for every environment. SmCo may be attractive in harsh settings, but its specific grade and product specification still need checking. Arnold’s magnet selection guide Arnold’s SmCo product information

Check assembly and supply constraints
Assess whether the selected magnet’s form is vulnerable to chipping or cracking under assembly loads. Consider how adhesive, a press fit, or mechanical containment affects the design, and confirm the supplier can provide the required shape, coating, tolerance, samples, and reliable production supply. These considerations can affect feasibility and total cost as much as the magnet’s purchase price. Arnold’s high-temperature magnet selection note
Use this comparison checklist
| Selection factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Magnetic output | Required field or flux in the assembled magnetic circuit at the actual operating point. |
| Demagnetization margin | Intrinsic coercivity and load line under the expected temperature and opposing fields. |
| Temperature | Worst-case magnet temperature and grade-specific reversible and irreversible behavior. |
| Corrosion | Environmental exposure and whether the material or a compatible coating suits it. |
| Geometry | Shape, dimensions, pole orientation, air gap, tolerances, and mounting. |
| Assembly | Required magnetizing field, retention method, and brittle-material handling risks. |
| Production | Manufacturability, availability, samples, lead time, and consistent supply. |
| Cost | Total system cost, not just the magnet’s purchase price. |
These factors reflect the DOE and supplier guidance on magnetic properties, operating conditions, and practical selection constraints. DOE report Arnold technical note

Verify a product listing before ordering
A listing is suitable only if its specifications match the design. Confirm the exact grade, dimensions, magnetization direction, temperature capability, coating, and tolerances. If any of these are missing, request the manufacturer’s data rather than assuming the product will meet the application’s needs. There is no general-purpose grade that can be selected from a listing title alone.

- 【Stronger Magnetic Force】Compared with individual NdFeB countersunk magnets, cup magnets have the advantage of being smaller in size and stronger in magnetic force, the magnetic force is 5 times stronger than normal rare earth magnets.Per strong magnet can up to 150 pound holding power.
- 【Nice Design】The round countersunk hole magnet cup design increases the beauty of the product, the steel shell concentrates the strong magnetic force on one side only, the other three sides are almost non-magnetic, well greatly increase the holding power.
- 【Sturable】Neodymium magnets are very brittle, and the steel shell protects magnets so that strong magnets are not easily broken. The magnetic force is permanent and the service life is super long.
- 【Wide Application】Due to its excellent performance, strong cup magnets are widely used in home or industry, such as clips in automation equipment, door closers, tool holders, fixtures, providing magnetic base mounting for lamps, clocks, machines, mirrors and so on. Heavy duty also comes with 6 stainless steel screws to increase the range of product usage.
- 【Precautions】As the neodymium magnet is very fragile and strong magnetic, when you use it you must remove it in a flat position, and after removing it, it is forbidden to collide it with other metal objects (including another magnet) to avoid injury! We are a magnet supplier with professional strength. You can certainly find strong cup magnets with holes you want in my shop!
