Start each game on Steam’s Default compatibility setting. If it fails, test the newest numbered Proton Stable release. Use Experimental when its changelog or a recent report matches your problem, and use Hotfix only for a named current issue. Reserve Bleeding Edge for diagnosis because Valve describes it as automated and untested. Install and select GE-Proton only when a documented, game-specific fix justifies it.
The short decision rule
Proton is Steam’s compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux and SteamOS. Steam ships several Proton versions and can select one automatically, or you can override the choice for an individual title. The safest sequence is to change one variable at a time:
- Check for a native Linux build and use it if it works.
- Launch the game with Default.
- If Default fails, try the newest numbered Proton Stable release.
- Try Proton Experimental when its current changelog or a recent, relevant report identifies a fix for your symptom.
- Use Proton Hotfix only when a current issue specifically names it.
- Use GE-Proton only when its documentation or a trustworthy game report identifies a needed patch.
- Use Proton Bleeding Edge only as a diagnostic experiment, never as the routine choice for valuable saves.
The highest version number is not automatically the best version. A working, older Stable build is preferable to a newer build that introduces a regression.

Steam exposes several Proton flavors. They differ in testing, update speed and risk rather than simply in age.

ValveSoftware’s Proton Versions documentation, updated July 29, 2026, describes Experimental as intended for public testing and warns that Bleeding Edge can “eat” a game prefix or saves. Treat those labels as risk guidance, not as a promise that one channel works for every title.
How to decide between two plausible versions
When two options both appear promising, compare them on the same criteria instead of choosing by version number. Stable has the strongest normal QA path. Experimental has the newest fixes but a greater regression risk. Hotfix is appropriate only when the issue is explicitly targeted. GE-Proton depends on the quality and currency of its community patches. Bleeding Edge has the least testing.
Then compare the evidence for your particular game: the game build, your GPU and driver class, graphics API, media playback, launcher behavior, controller support and online-service behavior. A report that fixes a launcher on one GPU may say nothing about a black screen on another. Prefer a recent report that names the exact Proton label and explains a reproducible symptom. Use it to design a test, not as a guarantee.

1. Confirm whether Proton is needed
Open the game’s Steam store and library information and check whether Steam offers a native Linux build. If the native build launches and performs correctly, do not force a Windows build through Proton simply because one is available. Native and Proton versions can have different patches, launchers, save locations and controller behavior.
2. Establish a clean Default baseline
Launch with Steam’s Default compatibility setting before changing anything. Record the game version or build, your SteamOS or Linux distribution, GPU model and driver, and the exact symptom. Classify the failure as launch, rendering, audio, video playback, controller input, launcher behavior or an online-service problem. This baseline lets you tell whether a Proton change actually helped.
3. Test the newest numbered Stable build
If Default does not work, select the newest installed numbered Stable release. Change only the compatibility tool, then repeat the same launch and test sequence. Stable is the normal fallback because Valve subjects it to extensive QA and a public release-candidate phase. Keep the Stable version if it solves the issue, even when Experimental or a higher number is available.
Use a numbered build when you need a fixed reference for troubleshooting or for a report. Write down its complete label rather than saying only “Stable”; different numbered releases contain different Wine, DXVK and vkd3d-proton changes.
4. Read reports for the exact game and hardware class
Check current ProtonDB reports for the specific game. Prefer recent entries that identify a Proton label, game build, GPU or driver class and a reproducible symptom or workaround. A report from different hardware can still suggest a useful experiment, but community reports are evidence to test, not a guarantee. Pay attention to whether the report predates a game, driver or Steam update.

Do not average contradictory reports into a vague recommendation. One person may be testing a different branch, launcher revision or controller. Look for repeated descriptions of the same failure and for reports that state what changed when the workaround was applied.
5. Try Experimental when the evidence matches
Experimental is appropriate when its current changelog names your game, when a recent game update caused the failure, or when a current report says the fix has not reached Stable. Test it per game rather than changing the global default. If the symptom becomes worse or a previously working feature regresses, return to the last known-good build.
Experimental is not merely a faster Stable release. It is a public-testing channel, so a fix can arrive alongside an unrelated regression. Keep notes on both the improvement and any new failure, such as broken cutscenes, altered controller mapping or a launcher that no longer opens.
6. Use Hotfix only for a named issue
Hotfix is a targeted response, not a broad performance tier. Choose it when Valve’s current issue discussion or a trustworthy report specifically points to Hotfix for your game and symptom. Once the fix moves into a normal release, switch back to that maintained build. If no current issue names Hotfix, choosing it simply because it looks newer adds uncertainty without evidence.
7. Consider GE-Proton for a documented reason
GE-Proton can solve a problem that has a known community patch, such as a media, controller or launcher workaround. Do not install it merely because it is newer or because another game uses it. Install it with a trusted package manager such as ProtonUp-Qt or your distribution’s supported method, then select it only for the affected title. Recheck the game after GE-Proton updates because its patches and behavior can change.
GE-Proton follows the same per-game override as Valve’s builds. Its README instructs users to open the game’s Compatibility tab, check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select the desired version. Keep the GE-Proton label in your notes so you can distinguish one community build from another.
8. Add launch options only for a matching symptom
Launch options are diagnostics, not universal optimizations. Valve documents PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% to switch from Vulkan-based DXVK rendering to OpenGL-based wined3d. This is worth testing when a game has a Vulkan or DXVK rendering problem and wined3d is a plausible workaround. Remove the option if it does not help, because it changes the graphics path and may reduce performance.

For a diagnostic log, use PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. Reproduce the failure, collect the generated log, and remove the option afterward. Keep the log with the Proton version, game build, driver and symptom so another person can reproduce the test. Do not stack several undocumented flags while testing; each additional option makes the result harder to interpret.

9. Keep the working choice per game
Once a tool works, leave it selected for that title instead of changing Steam’s global default. Proton prefixes and shader caches can retain state, so changing several versions or deleting files at once makes troubleshooting harder. Back up saves before Bleeding Edge experiments or invasive prefix work.
How to force Proton for one Steam game
Steam stores the override in the game’s properties, so it does not affect every title.
- Open Library in the Steam client.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the installed Proton version from the selector.
- Close the dialog and launch the game.
The same control is used for GE-Proton after it is installed. To return to Steam’s automatic choice, reopen the Compatibility tab and disable the force option. ValveSoftware’s Proton documentation also notes that per-game runtime configuration is available from the game’s Properties dialog; keep launch options and Proton selection separate so you know which change affected the result.

Steam’s broader Steam Play settings can expose the Proton versions installed on your system. Use those global settings only when you intentionally want the same experiment across many titles. For one game, the per-title selector is safer and easier to roll back.
Diagnose by symptom instead of by version number
The game does nothing or closes immediately
- Retest on Default, then the newest numbered Stable build.
- Check recent ProtonDB reports for the exact game build and a matching launch symptom.
- If the game update is recent and Experimental’s changelog names it, test Experimental.
- Use Hotfix only when the current issue explicitly identifies it.
- Capture a log with
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%if you need evidence for a report.
Also distinguish a Steam launcher failure from a game-process failure. If the launcher opens but the game does not, record that boundary; a report about a launcher patch may not apply to the game executable itself.
The game worked until an update
Record the previously working Proton build and keep it available. First test the current Stable and Experimental choices against the updated game, changing only Proton. A regression in Experimental is possible, so do not assume that moving to the testing channel is automatically a fix. If the old build still works, keep that per-game override while monitoring later releases.
Rendering is broken or the screen is black
Confirm the GPU driver and game build in your notes, then test a numbered Stable build. If the failure appears specific to Vulkan or DXVK, test PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% as a controlled comparison. Remove the option after the test and keep whichever combination is reproducible; do not leave multiple experimental flags enabled.

Audio, video or controller behavior is wrong
Look for a report that names the affected subsystem and Proton build. Experimental or GE-Proton may be justified when a changelog or README identifies a relevant media or controller patch. Test one change at a time and record whether the issue occurs in menus, gameplay, cutscenes or only in a launcher.

An online service or launcher fails
Online-service, DRM and anti-cheat behavior is specific to the game and its vendor. Do not infer support from a different title. Use a recent report that identifies the exact game build and service, and treat the suggested Proton version as a test rather than a guarantee. A Proton change cannot by itself overcome a service policy that excludes Linux or a vendor update that changed authentication.
Performance is inconsistent
First make sure the comparison uses the same graphics settings, scene, resolution and driver. A different shader-cache state or game update can look like a Proton improvement. Record whether the problem is a repeatable crash, shader stutter, low frame rate or intermittent hitching; those symptoms point to different evidence and should not be collapsed into “performance.”
How to run a useful comparison
A reproducible comparison is more valuable than trying every Proton build randomly. Use the same save, graphics settings, scene and controller for each run whenever possible.
- Hardware: GPU model, driver version and CPU class.
- Platform: SteamOS or Linux distribution and Steam client state.
- Game: title, branch and current game build.
- Tool: Default, exact numbered Stable label, Experimental, Hotfix, Bleeding Edge or GE-Proton label.
- Symptom: launch, rendering, audio, video, controller, launcher or online-service behavior.
- Result: launches, reaches menus, plays a repeatable scene, crashes, stutters or shows a specific error.
Change one item between runs. If you switch Proton, a launch option and a driver at the same time, you cannot identify the cause. Keep the first known-good configuration written down before experimenting. If a test requires a prefix conversion or deletion, treat that as a separate experiment and make a save backup first.

A global Steam Play setting is useful when you intentionally want the same experiment across many games. It is a poor way to solve one title’s regression because it can alter working games at the same time. Use the per-game Compatibility override for isolated testing, then leave unrelated titles on Default. This also makes future troubleshooting clearer: the override documents which tool the game was actually using.
Prefixes, saves and rollback safety
Each Proton choice can interact with the game’s compatibility prefix and shader cache. Avoid deleting or rebuilding those files while you are still trying to identify a Proton regression; doing so changes more than one variable. Back up important saves before Bleeding Edge, prefix conversion or other invasive work. If a test damages the prefix or makes the game unstable, disable the override and return to the last known-good Stable or Default configuration, restoring the save backup if necessary.
Bleeding Edge deserves extra caution because Valve describes it as automated and untested and warns that it can damage a prefix or saves. Use it only when reproducing a suspected fix or collecting diagnostic evidence, and do not treat it as a permanent upgrade path.
When to revisit your choice
Proton compatibility is volatile. A game update, GPU-driver update, Steam client update or Proton regression can change the best option. Recheck the current Valve release notes and recent game reports when a previously reliable title changes behavior. Do not rely on a fixed “latest Proton” rule: version labels and fixes move over time. A per-game choice that is correct today may need to be retested after a major update.

When revisiting, begin with the recorded known-good configuration. Compare the new Default and Stable behavior against it, then consult current Experimental, Hotfix or GE-Proton notes. This preserves a rollback path and prevents a routine update from turning into an uncontrolled series of changes.
A compact checklist
- Native Linux build works: use it and do not force Proton.
- No native build or it fails: start with Default.
- Default fails: test the newest numbered Stable release.
- Recent fix or update-specific regression: test Experimental.
- Named targeted issue: test Hotfix.
- Documented community patch: test GE-Proton per game.
- Only for diagnosis: test Bleeding Edge, with saves backed up.
- Graphics-specific experiment: use
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%. - Need diagnostics: use
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, then remove it. - Always record hardware, driver, game build, Proton label and symptom, and change one variable at a time.
ValveSoftware’s Proton repository states that Steam ships multiple Proton versions and can select a default or let you choose one in Steam Play settings. Its version guidance and the GE-Proton README both use the per-game Compatibility control described above. That combination—automatic Default first, controlled per-game overrides second—gives you broad compatibility with the least risk.
