Choose a POS terminal by separating three capabilities that are often confused: the payment methods it accepts, the wallets and phones it can process, and what “biometric” means in the proposed system. Require the vendor and your processor to confirm card brands, wallet schemes, PIN and cardholder-verification behavior, certifications, countries, currencies, connectivity, and integration before you buy. A phone running Tap to Pay is a software-and-device deployment; a dedicated terminal is hardware that still requires processor certification and an integrated payment application.
Start by defining the three capabilities
A terminal can accept contactless cards yet fail to process a particular wallet, or include a camera that authenticates staff without supporting biometric payment cards. Write down the exact outcome you need before comparing models.
Payment acceptance
List the instruments customers will present: EMV contactless cards, inserted chip cards, magnetic-stripe cards if still required in your market, PIN transactions, and refunds or reversals. “NFC” on a specification sheet only confirms radio hardware; it does not prove that the installed payment application is certified for your acquirer or card networks.

Ask for named wallet schemes rather than a generic “mobile payments” claim. Current documentation from Stripe identifies contactless cards plus Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay on compatible devices. Shopify’s Tap to Pay on Android documentation says its feature accepts contactless cards and digital wallets without a separate reader, but only with Shopify Payments, Android 13 or later, NFC, a recent security patch, and a supported country.

What “biometric” means
| Meaning | Where the biometric match occurs | What the terminal must do |
|---|---|---|
| Biometric payment card | Inside the customer’s card, using its fingerprint sensor | Accept the card’s EMV transaction and the resulting cardholder-verification method (CDCVM); the terminal does not need a camera or fingerprint reader. |
| Customer or visitor identification | At a camera or sensor on the terminal | Run the vendor’s face, fingerprint, or other identity workflow and connect that result to the application. This is not automatically a payment authorization. |
| Staff authentication | At the POS before a sale, refund, or drawer operation | Authenticate an employee and apply the correct role. Payment credentials and biometric templates may follow a different security and data-handling design. |
Visa describes biometric cards with an embedded fingerprint sensor that reports CDCVM after a successful match. EMVCo says such cards can be accepted on existing EMV terminals. By contrast, Elo lists a front camera for face authentication on its Pay 10-inch device, and Telpo lists fingerprint, 3D-face, and palm-vein options for terminal designs. These are different functions; do not approve a purchase until the supplier describes the sensor, liveness checks, enrollment, storage, and deletion process.
Contactless cards and wallets are related, not identical
A complete contactless deployment needs compatible NFC hardware, a certified payment application, an enabled acquirer or processor, and network approval for the transaction path. A terminal may read an ISO 14443 card but lack the application configuration or certification needed for a specific wallet or market.
| Customer method | Questions to ask | Typical verification behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Physical contactless card | Which EMV brands and card profiles are certified? Are offline and online PIN supported? | Contactless EMV transaction; the issuer and terminal decide whether a PIN or another CVM is required. |
| Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay | Is each wallet explicitly listed for this model, application version, processor, and country? | The device may supply CDCVM, so a PIN is often not requested, but the issuer and transaction rules remain authoritative. |
| Wallet on a phone used with Tap to Pay | Does the phone meet the operating-system, NFC, security-patch, integrity, and PSP requirements? | The phone becomes the reader; no separate reader is present, but the software deployment must be certified. |
Ask the processor to demonstrate Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and at least two physical contactless cards on the exact terminal, application build, merchant account, and currency you will use. A demonstration on a different account or a generic test reader is not proof of production compatibility.

Choose between Tap to Pay and a dedicated terminal
| Factor | Tap to Pay on a phone | Dedicated terminal |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Uses a compatible iPhone or Android COTS device with NFC. | Purpose-built payment hardware with a controlled peripheral set. |
| Deployment | Install or update a payment app and satisfy OS, security-patch, device-integrity, and PSP conditions. | Load a certified payment application and complete processor and POS integration. |
| Best fit | Mobile staff, pop-ups, delivery, and low-volume counters where a phone is already available. | Fixed counters, high-throughput lanes, environments needing a printer, scanner, cash drawer, mounting, or managed fleet. |
| Failure dependency | Phone battery, NFC condition, OS updates, and the supported payment-service-provider account. | Power, network, terminal firmware, processor certification, and replacement stock. |
Android Tap to Pay requirements
Shopify’s current help documentation specifies Android 13 or higher, NFC, a recent security patch, Shopify Payments, and a supported geography. Adyen documents an NFC-capable Android COTS device paired with a POS application integrated through its Terminal API. Confirm whether your chosen PSP is supported before buying phones; an NFC handset alone is not a payment solution.

iPhone and other PSP deployments
Apple publishes country availability and device requirements for Tap to Pay on iPhone, while Stripe documents compatible devices and supported countries for its Tap to Pay deployment. In every case, the merchant account, processor arrangement, operating system, NFC capability, and device-integrity checks must align. Country availability can block an otherwise suitable phone or terminal.
Understand the biometric payment path
Biometric card with CDCVM
In a biometric card transaction, the customer verifies a fingerprint on the card. The card then reports a consumer-device cardholder-verification result (CDCVM) through the EMV transaction. The existing contactless terminal reads the card and communicates with the issuer; it does not capture the customer’s fingerprint. Ask your processor whether the relevant card profiles and CDCVM rules are enabled for your market.
Face or fingerprint at the terminal
A camera or fingerprint reader on a terminal can identify a person before the POS application proceeds. That may support membership lookup, age or access control, or account selection, but it does not by itself authorize a card payment. Require a documented link between the identity result and the payment workflow, including what happens when the match fails or the customer declines biometric use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEmployee authentication
Staff biometrics are commonly used to protect refunds, discounts, voids, or cash-drawer access. Verify whether the terminal stores templates locally, uses a secure service, supports fallback credentials, and records an auditable operator ID. Keep this requirement separate from customer wallet acceptance when evaluating hardware.

Check certification and the security route
PCI Security Standards Council describes CPoC (Contactless Payments on Commercial off-the-shelf devices) for NFC acceptance on ordinary phones and tablets. Its current CPoC page states a formal sunset period from 1 May through 31 October 2026; MPoC is the newer path to consider for mobile and software-led acceptance. Ask the PSP which validated approach applies to your deployment and whether the application version is covered.
Visa states that contactless terminals must conform to Visa Contactless Payment Specification (VCPS) 2.1 or higher and support CDCVM. Request the actual network, EMV, and PCI validation references rather than a marketing statement. EMVCo’s biometric-card provider specification version 1.0 is dated 15 January 2025; ask vendors how their card and terminal solution aligns with the applicable EMVCo specifications.
“Contactless, or tap and go, payment adoption is on the rise globally, and merchants want affordable, flexible and safe options for contactless payment acceptance that allow them to best serve their customers.” — Troy Leach, Senior Vice President, PCI Security Standards Council, 2019.

Unattended terminal: PAX IM25
PAX positions the IM25 for unattended vending, electric-vehicle charging, parking, transit, and self-service. Its listed capabilities include EMV contactless cards and NFC mobile wallets. For an unattended installation, also verify enclosure dimensions, temperature and vandal-resistance ratings, mounting, remote monitoring, network failover, and how a customer receives a receipt or requests help.
Phone-led acceptance
Tap to Pay is attractive when workers already carry compatible phones and transactions are mobile. Budget for device enrollment, cases that do not block NFC, charging, replacement phones, mobile-data management, and the possibility that an OS or security-patch change can remove compatibility. If you need a printer, barcode scanner, cash drawer, or permanently mounted display, a dedicated terminal or an integrated POS station is usually easier to operate.
Match the terminal to your processor and country
Compatibility is an account-level question, not just a hardware question. Before requesting a quote, record the acquiring bank or PSP, legal merchant country, settlement currencies, card brands, tax requirements, and the POS software that will send authorizations and receive responses.

- Confirm that the processor has certified the exact model, firmware, payment application, and terminal-management method.
- Check whether Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, physical contactless, chip, magstripe, PIN, refunds, reversals, and pre-authorizations are enabled for your merchant account.
- Ask which countries and currencies are supported today and whether moving the device to another country invalidates certification.
- Define online-only, offline-approved, and offline-declined behavior, including maximum offline amount and retry handling.
- Specify Ethernet, Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, and fallback connectivity, along with remote reboot and monitoring.
- List required peripherals: receipt printer, barcode scanner, customer display, cash drawer, kitchen display, or accessibility accessories.
- Get the security-update schedule, supported lifetime, replacement process, and remote-wipe capability.
A procurement process that prevents expensive surprises
- Write the acceptance matrix. Name every physical card brand, wallet, PIN mode, refund type, and currency you need.
- Define biometric scope. State whether you need biometric-card CDCVM, customer face or fingerprint identification, employee authentication, or none. Require the sensor type, liveness method, enrollment process, storage location, fallback, and deletion procedure.
- Name the payment parties. Identify the acquirer, processor, gateway, POS software, and countries before comparing models.
- Request validation evidence. Ask for PCI, EMV, and network certificates, the covered firmware and application versions, and whether CPoC, MPoC, or another validated path applies.
- Check operational interfaces. Confirm printer, scanner, cash-drawer, customer-display, mounting, accessibility, remote-management, and fleet-replacement requirements.
- Run a controlled pilot. Use the exact merchant account and application build to test physical contactless cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, PIN, refunds, reversals, declined transactions, and a network interruption.
- Obtain a country-specific quote. Separate hardware, software subscription, transaction fees, connectivity, installation, replacement, support, and certification charges.
- Document acceptance criteria. Put supported methods, response times, update policy, and failure recovery in the purchase or service agreement.
Test the complete transaction, not just the tap
During the pilot, record the terminal model, firmware, POS application version, phone model if applicable, network type, merchant account, and test date. Then run these scenarios:

Calculate total cost without relying on a headline price
No comparable published total-cost figure covers these terminal categories. Build your own five-year estimate from the quote: hardware and mounts, payment application or POS subscription, transaction and gateway fees, cellular data, installation, accessories, replacement units, support, security-management service, and any certification or integration work. Compare the cost per active lane or mobile worker, not only the purchase price of one reader.
For a phone deployment, include compatible phones, protective cases, charging equipment, mobile-device management, and the labor of keeping operating systems and security patches eligible. For dedicated hardware, include spare-terminal inventory, depot repair, firmware rollout, and the cost of a failed printer, scanner, or network module.
Common failure modes and fixes
The terminal reads cards but rejects wallets
Check that the wallet scheme is enabled for the merchant account and country, then verify the application and firmware certification. NFC hardware alone cannot add a wallet that the processor has not enabled.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Tap to Pay will not activate
Check the phone’s operating-system version, NFC setting, current security patch, device-integrity status, supported country, and PSP account. For Android deployments, compare the device with the provider’s Android 13-or-later requirement where applicable.
A biometric feature works but does not authorize payment
Separate identity authentication from payment authorization. Ask the integrator to show the data exchanged between the biometric workflow and the POS, then test the approved fallback when no match is obtained.
PIN, refunds, or offline sales fail after installation
These functions are controlled by the processor configuration and application certification, not merely by the reader’s keypad. Have the acquirer enable and test each transaction type on the production account.
A device is approved in one country but unusable in another
Recheck country, currency, acquirer, wallet availability, radio approvals, and support contracts. Do not redeploy a certified device across borders without written confirmation from the processor and manufacturer.
Quick Recap
Decision guide
- Choose Tap to Pay when mobility and low equipment overhead matter more than printers, scanners, cash drawers, or a fixed customer display, and your PSP supports the required phones and country.
- Choose an integrated countertop terminal when you need a permanent screen, multiple peripherals, employee controls, and a predictable power and network arrangement.
- Choose an unattended unit when the terminal must survive vending, parking, transit, charging, or other self-service mounting and remote-management conditions.
- Choose a biometric-card-compatible reader without terminal biometrics when the goal is customer fingerprint verification on the card; existing EMV contactless hardware may be sufficient if the processor supports the card profile and CDCVM.
- Add terminal biometrics only for a defined identity workflow such as staff authorization or customer identification, with explicit liveness, fallback, and data-handling requirements.
