To choose a portable air conditioner for your room size, measure the area you want to cool, then compare the unit’s DOE seasonally adjusted cooling capacity (SACC) with its manufacturer’s room guidance and your room’s conditions. Also check whether it is single-duct or dual-duct and whether its exhaust kit fits your window. There is no authoritative universal square-foot chart for portable ACs: ENERGY STAR’s familiar chart is general guidance for room air conditioners, not portable models.
How do I choose a portable air conditioner for my room size?
- Measure the space. Multiply the room’s length by its width. For an irregular footprint, divide it into rectangles or other simple shapes, calculate each area, then add them. Measure connected areas too if you expect the unit to cool them.
- Note conditions that affect cooling. Record ceiling height, direct sunlight or shade, how many people regularly occupy the room, and heat from cooking or equipment. Room area alone does not capture the full cooling load.
- Compare ratings and room guidance. Look for the portable AC’s DOE SACC capacity and the manufacturer’s stated room coverage. If the figures seem inconsistent, check the product documentation and the conditions behind the coverage claim. Do not assume there is a standard conversion from SACC to square feet.
- Verify the installation. Confirm the duct arrangement, window dimensions and type, included bracket fit, and hose route against the model’s installation instructions.
- Compare operation and efficiency. Where available, review DOE-reported efficiency metrics such as CEER, along with the manufacturer’s information on condensate handling and controls.
What size portable AC do I need, and how many BTUs?
Start with the applicable SACC figure, not an unlabeled or differently defined BTU number in a listing. Portable AC product information may show capacity figures calculated under different rating approaches; those numbers are not automatically interchangeable. The Department of Energy describes its portable-AC test procedure and the seasonal-adjusted capacity framework in its portable air conditioner standards information and 2023 test-procedure rule.
ENERGY STAR publishes the following general room-air-conditioner guidance for an 8-foot ceiling. These values are not portable-AC sizing recommendations or a substitute for a portable model’s SACC rating and manufacturer guidance.
| Room area | General room-AC capacity guidance |
|---|---|
| 100–150 sq. ft. | 5,000 Btu/h |
| 150–250 sq. ft. | 6,000 Btu/h |
| 250–300 sq. ft. | 7,000 Btu/h |
| 300–350 sq. ft. | 8,000 Btu/h |
| 350–400 sq. ft. | 9,000 Btu/h |
| 400–450 sq. ft. | 10,000 Btu/h |
| 450–550 sq. ft. | 12,000 Btu/h |
The chart and adjustment suggestions come from ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner buying guidance. It suggests reducing capacity by 10% for heavy shade, increasing it by 10% for a very sunny room, adding 600 Btu/h for each regular occupant beyond two, and adding 4,000 Btu/h for a kitchen. Treat these as general room-AC suggestions, not a validated formula for selecting a portable AC.

- Room-to-Room Versatility: Lightweight with smooth-rolling casters, this compact AC moves effortlessly wherever cooling is needed. Perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, garages—any space up to 750 square feet
How do sunlight, ceilings, people, and heat change the choice?
A room with strong sun, a high ceiling, frequent occupancy, or heat-producing appliances may need more cooling than its floor area alone suggests. Shade can reduce solar heat gain. ENERGY STAR’s general room-AC guidance specifically calls out shade, sunlight, additional occupants, and kitchens as adjustment considerations; it does not provide a portable-specific sizing calculation.
Use these factors to decide whether a model’s stated coverage sounds appropriate for your actual room, then consult the manufacturer’s documentation. No rating guarantees a particular room temperature: outdoor conditions, insulation, air leakage, sun, ceiling height, and installation all affect results.

Fits most double-hung or sliding windows, requires no drilling, and can be set up in minutes — ideal for renters or temporary cooling needs.
Single-duct vs. dual-duct portable ACs
Duct configuration affects how the unit moves condenser air, so check it rather than comparing capacity alone. DOE’s definitions distinguish the setups as follows:
- Single-duct: one exhaust duct carries air out of the room; condenser inlet air is drawn from the conditioned space.
- Dual-duct: the unit has an inlet and an exhaust arrangement, typically routed through the window installation.
Some models may support more than one configuration; verify the exact model’s manual rather than assuming the duct arrangement can be changed or that a second duct is included. DOE’s portable-AC test-procedure rule describes the configurations and their duct arrangements.

Will the portable AC fit my window?
A portable AC needs a path to exhaust hot air outdoors. The supplied window bracket or compatible opening is part of the installation, not an optional detail. Before buying, check:
- Window type and opening dimensions against the bracket’s adjustment range.
- Whether the kit supports the model’s duct configuration, including both inlet and exhaust where applicable.
- Whether the hose can reach the window without an unsuitable route or obstruction.
- Manufacturer instructions for any alternate installation or replacement kit; compatibility must be confirmed for the specific model.
If the included bracket does not fit, do not assume a generic vent kit will work. Confirm its dimensions and model compatibility with the manufacturer.

What else should I compare before choosing?
- DOE SACC capacity: Compare like-for-like seasonal capacity figures across portable models.
- Manufacturer room guidance: Read it alongside your room’s sunlight, ceiling, occupancy, and heat conditions.
- Duct configuration: Check whether the design is single-duct or dual-duct, and what equipment is included.
- Installation compatibility: Match the window opening, bracket dimensions, and hose routing to the actual room.
- Efficiency and operation: Compare DOE-reported metrics such as CEER when available, and review manufacturer details on condensate handling and controls.
What changed in portable AC standards?
The Department of Energy says compliance with portable air-conditioner standards established in its January 10, 2020 final rule is required beginning January 10, 2025. This is a regulatory timeline, not a consumer performance figure. DOE treats portable air conditioners as a distinct product category; ENERGY STAR’s cited room-AC sizing page should not be read as a portable-AC certification or sizing chart.
