Choose a Pokémon Masters EX team from the stage outward, not from a fixed striker–support–tech formula. First identify the opponent’s weakness, field effects, status requirements, damage restrictions, incoming threat, and timing pressure. Then select a damage dealer that can exploit those conditions, a support pair that can survive and enable it, and a tech pair only when its control or field effects solve a remaining problem.

The official role labels are useful starting points, but they do not determine a pair’s entire job. Every sync pair has four moves, passive skills, a sync-move type, one weakness, and theme skills. Those details decide whether a nominal striker can self-buff, whether a support can hold enemy targeting, and whether a tech pair’s disruption is relevant to the stage.

What striker, support, and tech roles mean

The Pokémon Company describes sync pairs as the foundation of Pokémon Masters EX teams and states that each pair has a role: strike, support, or tech. The labels describe a pair’s usual emphasis, not a mandatory position in every team.

Role Typical strengths Typical limitations Questions to ask
Strike Higher Attack or Sp. Atk and the team’s main direct damage Often lower HP and less room for sustained incoming damage Is its move type effective against the stage weakness? Is the damage physical or special? Can it reach its needed buffs?
Support Higher HP, defensive utility, healing, and teammate stat increases Usually lower offensive stats and limited personal damage Can it survive the expected attacks, maintain the striker’s buffs, and supply gauge or speed?
Tech Status conditions, debuffs, weather, terrain, zones, traps, flinch, rebuffs, or other indirect control Its value can fall sharply when the stage does not reward its effect Does its control change the matchup, improve damage, or prevent the opponent’s plan?

These are tendencies rather than guarantees. A tech pair may be a serious damage dealer, a support may contribute meaningful offense, and a striker may provide utility. Read the individual pair’s moves and passives before assigning it a slot.

Read the stage before opening your roster

Stage information determines which jobs matter. Make a short checklist before choosing any pair:

  • Target weakness: Note the type the opponent is weak to and whether your candidate attacks that weakness reliably.
  • Weather, terrain, or zone rules: Check whether a field effect is required, prohibited, or likely to be overwritten during the battle.
  • Status or disruption requirements: Look for objectives involving a status condition, flinch, trap, rebuff, debuff, or another control effect.
  • Damage restrictions: Identify physical-versus-special requirements, area-damage needs, damage caps, or phases that punish a particular approach.
  • Incoming threat: Determine whether the opponent uses heavy single-target attacks, area attacks, status effects, stat drops, or a fast opening sequence.
  • Timing pressure: Decide whether the team must burst quickly, survive a long fight, reach a sync move early, or interrupt a dangerous action.

The objective can make an unconventional team better than a nominally stronger one. A stage that rewards a specific weather effect may value a tech pair more than a second attacker; a short burst stage may reward another damage dealer instead of control.

Choose the damage plan and striker

Match the attack to the weakness

Start with the pair whose damaging move or passive best exploits the opponent’s weakness. Confirm the move type, whether the attack is physical or special, and whether the pair’s multipliers activate under the stage conditions. A striker that matches the weakness but cannot maintain its required setup may perform worse than a damage-capable tech pair with reliable conditions.

Check single-target and area damage

Single-target damage is usually the better fit when one boss must fall quickly. Area damage matters when several opponents must be cleared or when a stage’s timing depends on removing side targets. The role label does not tell you which pattern a pair uses; inspect the move list and passives.

Audit self-buffing and setup time

List the offensive stats the damage dealer needs: Attack or Sp. Atk, critical rate, accuracy, speed, and any condition-specific multiplier. Then check which buffs it supplies to itself, which must come from an ally, and how many turns setup consumes. A striker that is self-sufficient leaves the support slot free for healing, defense, gauge, or speed. A striker with missing critical or accuracy support may require a different teammate even if its listed power is higher.

Separate burst from sustained damage

Some pairs are built to deliver a large window of damage around a sync move or a field effect. Others deal consistent damage while the team cycles moves. Choose according to the stage timer and the opponent’s phases. For a short fight, prioritize the fastest route to effective damage; for a long fight, include gauge stability, healing, and repeatable buffs in the damage plan.

Choose a support that enables the plan

Survival comes before convenience

A support must be able to take the attacks the stage actually delivers. Compare HP and defenses with the opponent’s pattern, then look for damage reduction, barriers, endure effects, healing, or other tools that preserve the team. Set tactics so the sturdier pair is targeted when appropriate; losing the support early can remove the buffs and recovery that the striker depends on.

  • Attack or Sp. Atk for the chosen damage type
  • Critical-rate increases or other offensive multipliers
  • Defense or Sp. Def for the incoming attack type
  • Speed and move-gauge assistance
  • Accuracy when the striker’s key move is unreliable without it
  • Healing, condition cleansing, barriers, or emergency protection

Do not count a self-only buff as team coverage. If the striker needs three separate offensive effects and the support supplies only one, account for the missing setup in your turn plan or choose a different pair.

Check gauge and tempo

Powerful moves are not useful if the team cannot afford them. A support that raises speed, restores gauge, or reduces the pressure on the move queue can increase real damage even without attacking. Compare how quickly the team can reach its first sync move and whether the support’s actions compete with the striker’s setup.

Plan for cleansing and recovery

Status effects, stat drops, and chip damage can invalidate a damage plan. If the stage repeatedly applies a harmful condition, give the support a reliable way to cleanse or prevent it, or use a tech pair whose control stops the source. Healing should be evaluated by timing and reliability, not merely by its listed amount.

Add a tech pair only when it solves a problem

Tech is not an automatic third slot. Add a tech pair when its indirect effect changes the matchup in a way that another striker or support cannot reproduce.

Damage amplification through field control

Weather, terrain, and zones can improve the team’s chosen damage plan or weaken the opponent’s. Verify which effect the pair creates, how long it lasts, whether another pair overwrites it, and whether the striker’s damage actually benefits. A field effect that does not align with the striker’s move type is usually a poor use of the slot.

Status, debuffs, and disruption

Status conditions, defense or Sp. Def debuffs, flinch, traps, rebuffs, and similar effects are valuable when they are reliable and relevant to the stage. Check resistance, accuracy, duration, and whether the effect must be reapplied. A control pair that cannot land its key effect consistently may contribute less than a second damage dealer.

Stopping the opponent’s strategy

A tech pair can be the best third member when the opponent’s dangerous move, buff sequence, or field effect must be interrupted. In that case, evaluate the tech pair by the threat it prevents rather than by its personal damage. If the opponent is already manageable through straightforward damage and survival, use the third slot for whichever of those jobs remains incomplete.

Compare candidates by job, not by role label

When two pairs can occupy the same slot, compare them on the following axes.

Axis What to compare Decision question
Damage Single-target or area attacks, physical or special output, burst timing, weakness access, and conditional multipliers Which pair produces the required damage during the stage’s important window?
Survival HP, defenses, damage reduction, healing, barriers, endure effects, and ability to hold targeting Which pair remains functional through the attacks the stage uses?
Buff coverage Attack, Sp. Atk, critical rate, speed, accuracy, gauge, defenses, and team-wide versus self-only effects Which candidate covers the striker’s actual setup gaps with fewer turns?
Control and field effects Status reliability, debuffs, weather, terrain, zones, traps, flinch, rebuffs, and cleansing Does the effect improve your plan or prevent a specific threat?
Sync economy Who wants the first sync, how quickly the team reaches it, and whether the EX effect improves the sequence Which candidate makes the planned sync order stronger?
Roster fit Type and region themes, available support coverage, duplicated jobs, and weaknesses Does this pair fill a missing job or merely repeat one you already solved?

This framework prevents a common mistake: choosing a pair because it is celebrated for one job while the stage requires another.

Use themes without sacrificing the matchup

Shared type or region themes can provide team bonuses, and official battle guidance recommends using shared themes while targeting the opponent’s weakness. Treat themes as an efficiency gain, not as a reason to keep a bad matchup.

First secure the damage type, survival, and control the stage demands. Then use available theme skills to improve the team. A weaker pair that activates a theme is not automatically better than a pair that brings the required buff, heal, or field effect. Theme bonuses also should not force duplicate jobs; two pairs that both provide the same minor benefit may leave the team without essential defense or gauge support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan the first sync move and EX role

Choose the first sync user deliberately

Decide before entering the stage who should use the first sync move. Consider the pair’s damage window, the speed of its setup, and whether syncing early advances the stage objective. If the team relies on a field effect, coordinate the sync with that effect rather than overwriting it accidentally.

Understand the original 6★ EX role effects

The original role-based 6★ EX effects are distinct:

  • Strike: the sync move hits all opponents.
  • Tech: the sync move deals double damage.
  • Support: the sync move provides double the usual team stat increases.

These effects change the value of the first sync. A strike EX effect is attractive when clearing multiple targets matters; a tech EX effect favors a damage-focused sync; a support EX effect can accelerate the team’s next phase through stronger stat increases.

Account for additional EX roles

The official site also documents EX roles named Strike, Tech, Support, Sprint, and Field. The relevant EX Role item unlocks the selected effect. Treat an EX role as an investment tied to the pair’s actual job and planned sync order, not as a universal ranking. The best effect depends on whether the pair is expected to deal sync damage, strengthen the team, accelerate the opening sequence, or maintain a field effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the team’s turn plan

Write a simple opening sequence before committing resources. It should answer who acts first, which buffs are mandatory, when the field or status effect is applied, and who receives enemy targeting.

  1. Open with the condition that cannot be delayed. Apply a required weather, terrain, zone, status, debuff, or defensive effect before the opponent’s dangerous action if possible.
  2. Complete only essential striker setup. Use the support’s buffs and the striker’s self-buffs that directly affect the planned damage window. Avoid spending turns on redundant increases.
  3. Stabilize the gauge. Use speed or gauge assistance early enough that the team can continue its damaging rotation.
  4. Use the first sync on purpose. Follow the selected sync order and align the EX effect with the stage’s target or phase.
  5. Reapply effects according to their duration. Track field effects, status conditions, debuffs, and defensive buffs so they do not expire during the key attack.

This sequence is a planning tool, not a rigid script. Change it when the opponent’s actions, random effects, or stage phases make a different response safer.

Invest resources only after the plan works on paper

Before spending scarce materials, inspect the candidate’s level, move level needs, potential, sync grid, and EX role. Official preparation guidance recommends reaching the stage’s recommended level, unlocking level caps when required, and using sync grids deliberately.

Training checklist

  • Raise each selected pair to the battle’s recommended level.
  • Unlock level caps required for that level range.
  • Review the sync grid for nodes that support the chosen damage, survival, gauge, or control plan.
  • Check whether key effects require a higher move level before assuming the pair can perform the job.
  • Confirm potential and EX requirements before spending materials.
  • Recheck the team after grid or move-level upgrades; a new buff, multiplier, or control option can change the pair’s best slot.

Do not invest solely because a pair has a favorable role label. Invest when its current kit solves the stage you intend to run.

Practical team-building workflow

Use this repeatable process for a new battle, event, or high-difficulty stage:

  1. Record the stage rules. Write down weakness, field effects, status needs, damage restrictions, incoming threats, and timing limits.
  2. List viable damage dealers. Include strikers and tech pairs that can meet the weakness or the stage’s special damage requirement.
  3. Remove candidates with unfixable gaps. Exclude pairs that cannot reach required accuracy, cannot operate under the field rules, or need setup the timer does not allow.
  4. Choose the support. Match survivability, targeting, healing, buffs, speed, gauge, and cleansing to the selected damage plan.
  5. Test a tech slot. Add control only if it improves damage, prevents a threat, or fulfills an explicit objective.
  6. Compare a second damage or support option. If tech does not solve a real problem, test the alternative instead.
  7. Set tactics and sync order. Put the sturdier pair in the appropriate targeting position and decide who receives the first sync.
  8. Apply themes last. Keep useful shared themes when they do not compromise the matchup.
  9. Check investment requirements. Verify level, level caps, grid nodes, move level, potential, and EX role before committing resources.
  10. Run a controlled test. Observe whether the team misses buffs, loses gauge, fails to survive, or lets a key effect expire. Replace the pair responsible for the unsolved problem.

Common team-building mistakes and fixes

Forcing one striker, one support, and one tech

Symptom: The team contains all three labels but fails the timer or cannot survive.

Fix: Replace the tech pair with a second damage dealer or support when the stage has no meaningful control requirement.

Choosing by listed role alone

Symptom: The striker matches the weakness but lacks critical rate, accuracy, gauge, or required setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Read all four moves and passive skills, then choose a support that covers the exact gap or select a more self-sufficient damage dealer.

Ignoring targeting

Symptom: The support falls before its healing and buffs matter.

Fix: Set tactics so the sturdier pair receives enemy targeting when appropriate, and add mitigation or healing that matches the attack pattern.

Using a field effect that conflicts with the damage plan

Symptom: A weather, terrain, or zone is active but the striker gains little or no benefit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Choose a field effect that improves the selected move type, or use the slot for a support or damage pair that addresses the actual bottleneck.

Overbuilding for themes

Symptom: The team activates shared themes but lacks a required buff, heal, or control effect.

Fix: Secure the stage’s weakness, survival, and objective first; retain themes only when the resulting team still performs those jobs.

Spending resources before checking the grid

Symptom: A supposedly ideal pair cannot access its important multiplier or utility at the available move level or investment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Inspect the sync grid, move-level requirements, level caps, potential, and EX role before finalizing the build.

How to decide whether tech belongs on your team

Ask three questions:

  1. Does the tech pair’s status, debuff, field effect, disruption, or cleansing directly improve the damage plan or survival?
  2. Is the effect reliable enough for the stage’s timing and resistance rules?
  3. Would a second striker or support solve the same problem more efficiently?

If the first two answers are yes and the third is no, tech is probably the correct third slot. If the stage is already solved by damage and survival, do not add tech merely to complete a role pattern.

What cannot be reduced to a universal tier list

No authoritative published statistic establishes that one of the three roles is always strongest. Roster strength, available banners, stage rules, and role counts change over time. Community databases can help filter pairs by role, but a role filter is not an official ranking and should not replace matchup analysis.

The dependable conclusion is conditional: choose the striker that meets the stage’s damage requirement, the support that keeps that plan alive and supplied, and the tech pair only when its control changes the outcome. A team that covers those jobs will outperform a formula assembled from labels alone.
