Choose a photo printer by starting with the largest print you expect to make and how often you will print. Then confirm the printer supports your paper and finish, compare its ink system and ongoing costs, and check that your image files have enough pixels for the print size. A printer’s advertised DPI is not the same as image resolution.
How do I choose the right photo printer?
- Set your maximum print size. Decide whether you need snapshots, letter-size prints, 13 × 19-inch prints, or panoramas. Check the exact model’s supported sheet or roll sizes and whether borderless printing is available at the size you want. Specifications can vary by region.
- Match ink to your work. Compare the actual ink set and the manufacturer’s permanence claims. Dye inks are commonly associated with vivid glossy prints and hobby use; pigment inks are commonly used for fine-art and professional work. These are tendencies, not guarantees of quality or longevity: paper, storage, and display conditions also matter. Epson describes dye inks as suited to vibrant color and glossy everyday prints, and positions pigment inks for archival and fine-art applications (Epson’s photo-printer buying guide).
- Check paper support and feed paths. Confirm that the printer accepts your preferred stock, including its thickness, and has a suitable tray or manual feed for it. Look for compatibility with glossy, semi-gloss, matte, or textured fine-art paper as needed.
- Estimate ownership cost for your volume. Cartridge printers often have a lower initial cost; refillable-tank models can reduce ongoing ink costs for frequent printing. Compare printer, ink, paper, and maintenance costs for your expected use. The sources cited here do not establish a universal cost per print.
- Check workflow and color management. Consider connectivity, borderless options, paper feeds, and whether your editing and printing workflow can use ICC profiles for the printer-paper combination.
For example, Epson maps its Expression Photo range to home enthusiasts, EcoTank Photo to higher-volume, cost-conscious use, and SureColor to professional or fine-art work. That describes Epson’s own product lines, not an independent ranking across brands (Epson Europe’s photo-printer range guide).
How different printer classes compare
| Printer type | Often suits | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Compact or home photo printer | Snapshots and occasional household prints | Maximum size, borderless sizes, ink set, and available media |
| Refillable-tank photo printer | Frequent printing where ongoing ink use matters | Supported sizes, paper handling, and total costs for your volume |
| Professional or fine-art inkjet | Larger prints and a wider choice of specialist media | Footprint, ink-set cost, media thickness and feed path, and color-management workflow |
These categories are a way to frame the purchase, not a cross-brand performance comparison. A specific model’s supported sizes and media determine whether it fits your work.
What resolution do I need to print a photo?
For a practical starting point, aim for about 300 pixels per inch (PPI) from the image file at the final print size. Divide the image’s pixel width and height by 300 to estimate print dimensions in inches. Canon Canada’s 2020 guide uses this planning target: a 2000 × 3400-pixel image works out to about 6 × 11 inches at that density, with 5 × 7 inches offered as a nearby standard size (Canon Canada’s resolution guide).

For an 8 × 10-inch print at 300 PPI, the image would need at least 2400 × 3000 pixels. That is a planning calculation, not a pass/fail rule. Source quality, cropping, resampling, the print process, and viewing distance all affect the result. Proof the image at the intended size when detail matters.
Calculate the image’s effective resolution
- Find the image file’s pixel dimensions, such as 3000 × 4000 pixels.
- Divide each dimension by the intended print dimensions in inches. For an 8 × 10-inch print from a 3000 × 4000-pixel file, the uncropped image provides 375 pixels per inch in either direction.
- Account for cropping. If the paper and image have different aspect ratios, fitting the image without distortion may trim part of it; calculate using the remaining pixel area.
Printer DPI describes how many ink dots a printer can place; it does not say how many pixels of image detail your file contains. Epson UK says that above roughly 240–300 DPI, added printer-dot resolution is nearly invisible at normal viewing distances. Treat that as Epson’s guidance, not a universal laboratory threshold (Epson’s photo-printer buying guide).

How should you choose photo paper and print settings?
Choose a surface for the image and where it will be viewed
- Glossy: Often emphasizes color saturation and contrast.
- Matte: Can soften tones and reduce glare.
- Textured fine-art paper: Adds a tactile surface character.
These are general characteristics, not guarantees for every printer and paper combination. Canon describes these finish differences in its print-presentation guidance. Check which stocks the printer supports, including thickness and feed path. Photo paper is usually coated on one side; load it with the coated side facing the direction specified by the printer, and turn duplex printing off for photo jobs. HP explains these handling and aspect-ratio considerations in its photo-printing guidance.
Match the driver settings to the paper
Select the media type that matches the loaded stock, and use a suitable quality setting. A mismatch can contribute to running ink, uneven tones, or poor results. In Epson’s driver guidance, example modes include Photo at 1440 dpi, Best Photo at 2880 dpi, and Photo RPM at 5760 dpi; the last option depends on model and optimized resolution. Those figures apply to the cited Epson guidance, not every printer. Epson also cautions that an excessively high-quality mode on unsuitable paper can produce blurry or oversaturated output (Epson’s media and quality-setting FAQ).

Use borderless printing carefully
Borderless printing may enlarge an image slightly and crop its edges. The risk is higher when the image’s aspect ratio differs from the paper’s, so check the crop preview and keep important details away from the edges. For more predictable color, use an ICC profile made for the specific printer and paper when one is available. Let either the application or the printer manage color—not both at once, which HP warns can lead to unexpected color results (HP’s photo-printing guidance). Canon lists profiles for its own papers and notes that third-party brands including Hahnemühle, Canson, Moab, and Red River offer profiles for Canon professional inkjet photo printers (Canon’s print-presentation guidance).

Manufacturer specifications can clarify fit but are not independent print-quality tests. For example, Canon lists the PIXMA G6020 (called G620 in the page title) with pigment-based black and dye-based color inks, borderless printing, and support for photo media including glossy, semi-gloss, and matte. Its listing gives formats from 3.5 × 3.5 inches through letter and a maximum resolution of 4800 × 1200 dpi. Verify the exact regional model and specifications before buying (Canon’s PIXMA G6020/G620 listing).
Canon lists its imagePROGRAF PRO-310 as a wireless 13-inch photo printer with nine pigment color inks plus Chroma Optimizer, borderless output from 3.5 × 5 to 13 × 19 inches, and a maximum resolution of 4800 × 2400 dpi. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results (Canon’s PRO-310 listing). Canon’s training article also names 13 × 19-inch output for the PRO-310 and up to 17 × 22 inches for the PRO-1100; it gives panoramic lengths up to 70 inches for the PRO-310 or 129 inches for the PRO-1100. Confirm the precise product-and-media combination for any intended size (Canon’s print-presentation guidance).
