Choose a NAS based on the remote-access method it supports and the services you need—not the model name alone. For broad, secure access to your home or office network, favor a VPN to the router or private network, then connect to the NAS at its local address. A vendor relay can be easier to set up, but may limit compatibility or performance. Avoid casually exposing NAS management or file-sharing ports to the internet.
What secure remote access means for a NAS
Remote access is not one feature. It is a path from your off-site device to the NAS, and different paths expose different services and rely on different infrastructure. Synology documents QuickConnect, DDNS, and port forwarding. QNAP documents router-hosted VPN, a VPN server on the NAS, myQNAPcloud Link relay, and more involved multi-site VPN options. These are vendor-specific workflows, not interchangeable guarantees of security.
The core buying question is whether the NAS operating system and your network setup support the access method you intend to use, while still allowing your required apps and file workflows to work. A NAS with remote-access branding may not support every protocol or service through every connection method.
Compare the main access methods
| Method | Exposure and control | Compatibility and performance | Setup trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN on the router or private network | Connects the remote device to the private network; QNAP recommends then reaching the NAS through its LAN address rather than publishing NAS services directly. You administer the VPN endpoint. | Useful when you need access to multiple LAN services. Throughput depends on the router, internet connections, and client devices. | Requires VPN support and configuration on the router or network gateway. |
| VPN server on the NAS | Provides a configurable VPN endpoint on the NAS; still requires careful network configuration and account security. | Can offer more configuration options, but compatibility depends on VPN software and clients. | QNAP describes it as more involved than router VPN. |
| Vendor relay service | QNAP says myQNAPcloud Link can work without exposing the NAS directly to the internet. Access depends on a vendor account and service. | QNAP notes performance may be slower. Synology says QuickConnect does not support every service or workflow, including some network file-sharing and VPN-server use. | Often simpler than configuring a VPN, but review the service’s feature limits. |
| Direct port forwarding or UPnP | Publishes selected services through the router to the internet. QNAP identifies this approach as a risk path and advises against casual direct exposure. | Whether a service works depends on the forwarded ports and the application. | Can appear straightforward, but leaves you responsible for exposure choices, updates, and ongoing security administration. |
These comparisons reflect manufacturer documentation, not independent security testing or a benchmark. A VPN reduces the need to publish NAS services directly, but it still needs sound configuration and maintenance.

Choose based on your workflows
For access to more than files
If you need to reach several devices or services on your home or office network, a VPN to the router or private network is usually the most suitable starting point. QNAP’s recommendation is: “To access your QNAP NAS from the Internet, first establish a VPN connection to your router, and then connect to the QNAP NAS via VPN.” Once connected, use the NAS’s private LAN address.
For simple access to supported NAS features
A vendor relay may be a reasonable choice if ease of setup matters more than broad protocol support. Before choosing a NAS, check which apps and services the relay supports, how access is tied to a vendor account, and whether possible slower performance is acceptable. Do not assume that a relay supports SMB, NFS, WebDAV, a VPN client, or every third-party app.

For protocols and applications that need a direct network path
Check compatibility before buying. Synology’s QuickConnect documentation lists services and workflows it does not support, including several network file-sharing and VPN-server workflows. If a required service is unsupported through the relay, see whether a VPN offers the needed access and whether the NAS and client software support it.
Use this buyer checklist
- Identify the exact workflow. List the devices, apps, file protocols, and backup tasks you need to use away from home or the office.
- Check the exact NAS and operating system. Confirm that the model’s current OS supports your intended VPN or relay method and the services you plan to access.
- Check client compatibility. Verify support on each remote phone, computer, or other client. Confirm the required workflow works through the selected method rather than assuming all NAS functions are remotely available.
- Choose your access path. Prefer a VPN to the router or private network for broad LAN access. Consider a vendor relay when its supported functions are enough and simpler setup is valuable.
- Review the administration burden. Decide who will configure and maintain the VPN, vendor account, permissions, updates, and monitoring.
- Check security controls and update policy. Look for available multi-step authentication, account and folder permissions, HTTPS connectivity, automatic blocking, and firewall controls. Keep the NAS operating system and packages current.
- Plan recovery. Keep a separate backup. Remote access controls help manage access; they do not replace a backup or guarantee security.
Secure the access you configure
Remote access is only as well controlled as the accounts and permissions behind it. QNAP documents two-step verification, folder permissions, IP blocking, HTTPS connectivity, and firewall-related controls. Synology documents automatic blocking after repeated failed logins. Availability and exact labels vary by platform and software version, so verify what your NAS actually offers.

- Avoid enabling UPnP or broad port forwarding unless you understand which services become reachable and can maintain them safely.
These controls reduce avoidable risks; no single setting makes a NAS secure by itself. QNAP’s advice is manufacturer guidance, not an independent standards-body rule.

Do not select hardware solely because a listing says “remote access.” Confirm the exact model and current operating system support the connection method, VPN or relay, and client workflows you need. Network hardware matters too: if you choose a router-hosted VPN, check that your existing router supports the VPN feature and can handle the required connection. QNAP notes router VPN can be limited by router performance and features; actual throughput also depends on both ends of the connection.
