Choose by the exact TV model, screen size and regional version—not by the Mini-LED label or a series-wide headline spec. First confirm the PC signal the set accepts at your target resolution and refresh rate, then check VRR, low-latency features, capable HDMI ports and independent performance measurements. Finally, make sure the screen fits your room and intended use.
Start with the resolution and refresh rate your PC can use
Refresh rate is how often a display updates its image. For high-refresh PC gaming, 4K at 120Hz is a practical baseline to investigate; some TVs accept 144Hz or higher from a compatible PC, but those capabilities are model-specific. A TV cannot produce frames your graphics card and game do not render, so consider your PC and the games you play alongside the display specification.
Do not assume a TV’s native panel refresh rate tells you every input mode it accepts. Confirm the maximum PC signal at the resolution you intend to use, and distinguish native panel capability from marketing terms or processing features. LG’s [TV gaming guide] explains refresh rate and its 2026 comparison includes a Mini-LED QNED option at 4K/120Hz.
Examples show why model and size matter
- TCL C805K: TCL’s UK page for the 55-inch model lists a 4K Mini-LED TV with 144Hz VRR, HDMI 2.1, ALLM and FreeSync Premium Pro. Treat this as a documented configuration, not a guarantee for other sizes or countries. (TCL C805K product page)
- Sony BRAVIA XR X93L: Sony’s page for this 2023 model specifies a native 120Hz panel and at least two HDMI 2.1 inputs supporting 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM. This illustrates a 120Hz option; it does not establish current availability. (Sony X93L product page)
- LG QNED85: LG Canada’s 2025 specifications list 144Hz for 100-, 86-, 75- and 65-inch versions, but 120Hz for 55- and 50-inch versions. (LG Canada QNED85 specifications)
Check VRR, ALLM and real input lag separately
VRR helps when frame rates vary
Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a display synchronize its refresh timing with the game’s output, which can reduce tearing and stutter when frame rates fluctuate. Check which VRR formats the TV supports and whether they work with your graphics card. A manufacturer may list FreeSync, for example, but that does not establish compatibility with every GPU or input mode. LG describes VRR in its gaming guide; TCL lists FreeSync Premium Pro on the specified C805K page and notes that features vary by model, size and region (TCL gaming features).

ALLM is automatic switching, not a lag rating
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) can tell a compatible TV to switch automatically into a low-latency mode when gaming begins. It is a convenience feature, not a measurement of how responsive the screen is. LG defines input lag as the delay between pressing a controller button and seeing the action on screen (LG TV gaming guide).
For responsiveness, compare independent input-lag measurements at the resolution, refresh rate and picture mode you will actually use. A result measured at 60Hz, for example, should not be treated as the TV’s lag at a higher refresh rate. Check whether a measurement uses Game Mode and whether enabling VRR or HDR changes the tested configuration.

Count the HDMI ports that support your desired mode
“HDMI 2.1” on a product page does not tell you, by itself, how many inputs support the combination of 4K, high refresh, VRR and ALLM you need. Use the port-by-port chart or manual for the exact model and size. Count capable inputs after accounting for eARC and other devices such as a console or receiver.
Sony’s support chart shows that 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM support differs across models and model years; some older sets require software updates (Sony HDMI feature support chart). Sony lists at least two capable HDMI 2.1 inputs on the X93L product page (Sony X93L). LG Canada’s QNED85 page also distinguishes port and refresh specifications by size, including four HDMI 2.1 ports for the larger-size group (LG Canada QNED85 specifications).

Confirm that your chosen input and HDMI cable can carry the required signal. Use a capable port, and check the TV manual for any required HDMI enhanced-format or input-signal setting. After setup, verify that the PC is actually outputting the selected resolution and refresh rate and that VRR is active when expected.
Evaluate Mini-LED picture quality beyond zone count
Mini-LED backlighting and local dimming can help a TV produce bright highlights alongside darker areas, but a zone count or peak-brightness claim cannot predict the whole image. Local dimming behavior, blooming around bright objects, black level, uniformity and tone mapping affect how HDR looks. Game mode may also change processing or local-dimming behavior.

Look for independent tests that measure those qualities in conditions relevant to your use, including HDR in game mode. Compare the HDR formats the TV supports in that mode rather than relying only on a general HDR badge. Sony describes the X93L’s Mini-LED local dimming (Sony X93L product page); TCL cautions that features vary by model, size and region (TCL gaming features). These manufacturer descriptions are not independent quality measurements.
Match the screen to your desk or living room
A television that works well from a sofa may be uncomfortable as a close desktop display. Consider screen size against viewing distance, seating and available space. At desk distance, also check desktop scaling and text clarity, plus glare from windows or room lighting. If you plan to use the TV for both gaming and desktop work, look for observations or measurements of text rendering and uniformity at close range.

Do not infer that a whole product family has identical performance or features. Regional specifications can differ, and even sizes within one range can have different refresh rates or port configurations, as LG Canada’s QNED85 size table demonstrates (LG QNED85 specifications). Verify the full model number, size and country-specific specification sheet before comparing prices or placing an order.

Set it up and confirm the advertised features work
- Identify the exact input: Connect the PC to an HDMI port documented to support your target mode. If other devices use the TV, confirm the remaining capable ports are enough for your setup.
- Check the manual’s HDMI settings: Enable the input signal or enhanced-format option if the TV requires it for the desired bandwidth or gaming features.
- Set the PC output: In the operating system and graphics settings, select the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. Confirm the GPU output and game can support that mode.
- Enable game features: Turn on the TV’s Game Mode and configure VRR if needed. Confirm ALLM switching and VRR operation rather than relying on a feature list.
- Assess the trade-offs: Check HDR, local dimming and image processing in the modes you will use. If the picture changes noticeably in Game Mode, decide whether the responsiveness benefit is worth that difference.
Do not mistake vendor specifications for comparative test results
Manufacturer pages establish what a vendor says a particular model or configuration supports; they do not establish which TV has the best input lag, HDR image or value. No single best model follows from these specifications alone. Make the final choice using independent measurements for the exact use case, then confirm regional size, port and firmware details. Samsung UK, for example, says its gaming TVs support up to 4K 144Hz, 165Hz or 240Hz over HDMI 2.1 depending on model, and describes Game Bar information including VRR and input lag; verify any specific set against its own specifications (Samsung UK gaming TVs).
