For a Steam Deck, choose a microSDXC UHS-I card rated U3 or better, then pick capacity to fit your installed library and budget. Valve says UHS-I cards rated Class 3 or better are supported. Before buying for any other handheld, check its exact requirements: Nintendo Switch 2, for example, requires a microSD Express card for game storage, so an ordinary UHS-I card is not a substitute.

Start with your handheld’s compatibility requirements

Card labels describe different things: capacity family, bus interface, and performance class. A card must meet the device’s interface requirements before its capacity or speed markings matter.

For another Windows handheld PC, use its manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model. “Handheld PC” does not imply a shared card interface or supported capacity.

What the markings mean

UHS-I is the interface

UHS-I describes the card’s bus interface, not its guaranteed real-world transfer rate. The SD Association gives UHS-I SDR104 a bus maximum of 104 MB/s; actual card and device speeds vary, and the host’s interface limits what a card can achieve. A higher peak-speed number on a retail listing does not make a Steam Deck’s UHS-I interface faster. See the SD Association’s bus-speed overview.

SanDisk QuickFlow Technology is only available for 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 400GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities. 1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes and 1TB=1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)

  • 4K and 5K UHD-ready with UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) and Video Speed Class 30 (V30) (Compatible device required. Full HD (1920x1080), 4K UHD (3840 x 2160), and 5K UHD (5120 X 2880) support may vary based upon host device, file attributes and other factors. See HD page on SanDisk site. UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) designates a performance option designed to support real-time video recording with UHS-enabled host devices. Video Speed Class 30 (V30), sustained video capture rate of 30MB/s, designates a performance option designed to support real-time video recording with UHS-enabled host devices. See the SD Association’s official website.)

U3 and V30 are write-speed classes

U3 and V30 are minimum sequential-write performance classes. They can help identify sustained-write capability, but they are not benchmarks of how quickly a particular game will load on a Steam Deck. The SD Association explains these ratings in its speed-class standards.

SDXC identifies a capacity family

SDXC covers capacities above 32GB through 2TB under the SD Association standard. The label tells you the card’s capacity family, not what size is best for your library or budget. Consult the SD Association capacity definitions.

  • Transfer files fast with up to 150MB/s read speeds and SanDisk MobileMate USB 3.0 microSD card reader. (Engineered with proprietary technology to reach speeds beyond UHS-I 104MB/s, require compatible devices capable of reaching such speed. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions, and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes. Reader sold separately.)
  • Load apps faster with A1-rated performance. (A1 performance is 1500 read IOPS, 500 write IOPS. Based on internal testing. Results may vary based on host device, app type, and other factors.)

A1 and A2 are not automatic upgrades

Application Performance Class ratings describe defined random and sequential behavior. A2 performance depends on support from both the card and host; Valve’s compatibility guidance specifies UHS-I and Class 3 or better but does not promise A2-specific performance. Treat A2 as a label to compare, not a guarantee that games will load faster on every handheld. See the SD Association’s Application Performance Class explanation.

Choose capacity for the library you actually keep installed

Estimate how much space your current games and other files use, then allow room for titles you expect to add. A larger card can reduce how often you need to uninstall and reinstall games, but the standards do not establish one ideal capacity or best value for every buyer. For Steam Deck, choose an SDXC card up to the supported limit rather than interpreting “SDXC” as a recommendation for a particular size.

  • MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

Think of 1TB as one possible capacity to compare, not a universal recommendation. Compare the listed price per usable gigabyte for the cards you are considering; prices vary, and no fixed best-value capacity follows from the compatibility specifications.

Compare cards without overpaying for a speed claim

  1. Confirm the exact device and interface. For Steam Deck, start with microSDXC UHS-I; for Switch 2 game storage, look for microSD Express. For other handhelds, check the model’s own specifications.
  2. Choose a capacity. Match it to the installed library you want to keep available and your budget.
  3. Check the speed-class marks. For Steam Deck, meet Valve’s Class 3 or better guidance. U3 or V30 markings describe minimum sequential-write classes, not game-loading benchmarks.
  4. Consider A2 only with the host limitation in mind. It is meaningful as an application-performance rating only when both host and card support it; do not pay a premium on the assumption that it guarantees faster game loading.
  5. Compare the seller and warranty as well as the label. Check that the listing clearly identifies the interface, capacity, and performance marks, and assess seller confidence and warranty terms. Technical standards alone do not establish current prices, seller reliability, or model-specific Deck performance.

Format the card in Steam Deck

Use Steam Deck’s own formatting workflow rather than preparing the card on another device: Valve says the Deck formats a microSD card as ext4 with casefolding. Formatting erases existing data, so copy off anything you need before proceeding. Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide provides its support guidance.

Will a faster card make games load faster?

Advertised peak speeds and speed-class marks do not establish a specific game-loading improvement on Steam Deck. The cited official specifications and standards define compatibility and card capabilities, but they do not provide comparative game-loading benchmarks for named microSD models. Choose a card that meets the Deck’s supported interface and class, then weigh capacity, price, seller confidence, and warranty rather than assuming a higher peak number will produce a noticeable in-game difference.
