Choose the platform that fits the membership business you can reliably run, not the one with the longest feature list. First decide whether you need a fan community, a paid publication, or memberships on an existing site; then model all fees, verify the benefits and media you can deliver, and check how easily you can keep your brand, domain and member data if you ever move.
Start with the business you can sustain
A membership platform is the billing, publishing and relationship layer between your work and paying supporters. The right choice depends less on a perfect feature match than on whether the service makes your recurring promises practical. Before opening a pricing page, write down what members will receive every month and how much time you can spend delivering it.
- Fan membership: supporters mainly want access, community, recognition, early releases or behind-the-scenes material.
- Paid publication: the core product is a newsletter, article, podcast or other regularly issued publication.
- Membership attached to a site: you already have a website and want branded checkout, gated content and subscription management without moving your public presence.
If you cannot describe a repeatable monthly benefit, delay the platform decision. A service cannot fix an offer that is too broad, too labor-intensive or dependent on constant one-off launches.
Turn your promise into a delivery schedule
List each proposed benefit, its format and the work required. For example, “one members-only essay each month” has a predictable production cost; “weekly video, private chat, monthly livestream and mailed merchandise” creates several separate obligations. Include moderation, customer support, refunds, fulfillment and tax administration in the estimate. These tasks continue after the initial launch excitement.

Patreon’s creator guidance recommends beginning with one accessible tier and adding complexity only as demand develops. Its 2026 guidance calls $5 a sweet spot for many new membership businesses launched on Patreon. That is a Patreon-published guideline, not a universal price benchmark: your audience, costs and promise may justify a different amount. One clear tier also lets you learn which benefits members actually use before you create a complicated ladder.
How the main platform types differ
| Platform | Best fit | What it documents | Published fee information | Key trade-off to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patreon | Hosted fan membership and commerce | Paid tiers, exclusive content, early access, community access, recognition, one-time purchases and relationship-management data | Creators who published after August 4, 2025 are on a standard 10% platform-fee plan, plus payment processing, payout and applicable tax charges (Patreon, 2026) | You gain a hosted fan workflow, but must model the percentage fee and confirm data-export and branding limits for your setup |
| Ko-fi | Lightweight memberships and direct support | Multiple price tiers, custom benefits including Discord roles, exclusive content and physical products; immediate first payment and monthly recurring billing | 5% service fee on membership payments (Ko-fi help and product pages accessed 2026) | Check whether its publishing, community and data tools are sufficient as your program grows |
| Ghost | Publication-led memberships | Native memberships and publication tools with a monthly subscription model | Its comparison page presents pricing from $15 per month and zero transaction fees; verify the current plan and hosting tier before purchase | You trade a platform percentage for a recurring subscription and must select the hosting level that supports your audience |
| Memberful | Branded membership layer for an existing presence | Hosted tools or WordPress integration, branded pricing pages, subscription management and keeping content on your domain | Current service, transaction and hosting costs depend on the chosen setup; use its current pricing and comparison pages | More control can mean more configuration, hosting and maintenance decisions |
These are product categories rather than a universal ranking. A publication with a strong email audience may value a different architecture from a video creator who needs discovery and community workflows.
Compare the six decision axes
1. Business model
Start by choosing the closest operating model. A fan-community service is useful when supporters discover you through the platform and expect posts, chats, recognition or early access. A publication-led system is better when the paid newsletter or other recurring issue is the product. A membership layer for an existing site makes sense when your domain, design and content system already matter and you want subscriptions added rather than rebuilt.
2. Total cost, not the headline fee
Calculate the amount you keep after every recurring charge. Include the platform percentage or monthly subscription, payment processing, payout charges, currency conversion, applicable taxes and any hosting or add-on costs. A percentage fee is usually easier to start with at low volume; a monthly plan can become more predictable as revenue grows, but only if the plan includes the capacity and features you need.
Use a spreadsheet with these columns: member price, number of members, gross receipts, platform fee, payment-processing estimate, payout or currency charges, hosting or add-ons, refunds and net receipts. Keep assumptions visible and label whether a number is a vendor-published rate, your processor’s rate or an estimate. Do not treat a platform’s “zero transaction fee” statement as zero cost overall: payment processing, hosting, taxes and other charges may still apply.
3. Ownership and portability
Ask where your public pages live, whose domain members see at checkout, and what member information you can export. Confirm whether exports include email addresses, subscription status, plan history, consent records and identifiers needed to reconcile payments. Read the export procedure, not just a marketing statement that data is available. Check whether an export is self-service, how often you can run it and whether canceled members are included.
A custom domain and consistent branding reduce the disruption of a future move. If a platform hosts your entire publication, identify which parts can be exported as files and which must be recreated. For a site-connected layer, confirm how URLs, login accounts and gated content behave if you change WordPress themes, hosts or payment processors.

4. Benefit formats
Match each promised benefit to a documented capability before you launch. Common formats include:
- Members-only posts, newsletters, audio, video and downloads.
- Early access to public releases or events.
- Private discussion spaces, including role assignment in a community service.
- Live sessions and recordings.
- Recognition, badges or supporter lists.
- Physical products and other fulfillment-heavy rewards.
- One-time purchases alongside recurring memberships.
Confirm file-size limits, video and audio delivery, download protection, livestream integrations, community moderation controls and whether benefits can be restricted by tier. A platform may accept a media type but still make it awkward to organize an archive or notify the right members.
5. Audience acquisition
Some hosted services provide discovery, fan workflows and a familiar checkout. That can matter when you are building an audience from scratch. A publication on your own domain gives you more control but assumes you can bring visitors through email, search, social channels or partnerships. Ask how much of your growth depends on a platform directory and what happens if its discovery algorithm or terms change.
6. Operations
Every tier creates recurring support work. Map who handles failed payments, address changes, refunds, chargebacks, moderation, privacy requests and physical fulfillment. Look for automated reminders, self-service subscription changes, clear cancellation behavior and an administrative view that lets you resolve a member’s problem without guesswork.

Platform-by-platform guidance
Patreon: hosted fan membership and commerce
Patreon documents paid tiers, exclusive content, early access, community access, recognition, one-time purchases and relationship-management data. It is a natural candidate when your offer is a continuing relationship with fans and you want a hosted workflow for posts and commerce.
For creators who published after August 4, 2025, Patreon states that the standard platform fee is 10%, with payment-processing, payout and applicable tax charges added. Older or otherwise different creator arrangements may not follow that exact rule, so verify the terms attached to your account. Model the fee against your actual member price rather than assuming the displayed tier price is your net revenue.
Before committing, test the member journey on a phone: joining, selecting a tier, finding an exclusive post, changing a payment method and canceling. Then confirm which relationship-management fields can be exported and whether your preferred community or commerce integrations are available on your plan.

Ko-fi: lightweight memberships and support
Ko-fi documents multiple price tiers and custom benefits such as Discord roles, exclusive content and physical products. It also states that the first payment can arrive immediately and that memberships use monthly recurring billing. That combination suits creators who want a simple support page with optional recurring access rather than a publication infrastructure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKo-fi states a 5% service fee on membership payments. Payment processing and any other charges still need to be included in your calculation. Verify how your chosen payment method handles currency conversion, payouts, refunds and failed renewals in the countries where your members live.
Check the practical limits before adding tiers: how exclusive posts are organized, how community roles are synchronized, what members can download, and how you export contact and subscription information. Physical benefits require a separate inventory, postage and replacement plan even when the platform can list the product.
Ghost: publication-led memberships
Ghost is designed around publishing with native memberships and a monthly subscription model. Its current comparison page presents plans from $15 per month and advertises zero transaction fees. Treat both figures as time-sensitive: verify the current plan, hosting tier, member limit and included features immediately before subscribing.
Ghost is a strong fit when the publication itself is the product and you want the public site, newsletter and member experience organized together. Compare the recurring subscription with the percentage you would pay elsewhere at your expected revenue. Even with zero platform transaction fees, budget for payment processing, hosting level, email delivery and any tools needed for community or video benefits.

Memberful: branded membership layer
Memberful supports hosted tools or WordPress, branded pricing pages, subscription management and keeping content on the creator’s domain. It is oriented toward creators who want a membership layer attached to an established website or brand.

Because the cost depends on the selected setup, use Memberful’s current pricing and comparison pages to model service, transaction and hosting charges. Include WordPress hosting, themes, plugins, maintenance and technical support if you operate the site yourself. Decide who owns updates and troubleshooting; a highly branded system can require more hands-on administration than a fully hosted fan page.
Test the complete path on your domain: pricing page, checkout, account management, gated content, email notifications and cancellation. Verify what happens during a WordPress outage or theme change, and document how to export members and restore access if you migrate.

Use scenarios rather than a single optimistic forecast. Suppose a $5 tier reaches 100 members: gross receipts are $500 per month before any charges. Under Patreon’s stated 10% platform fee for eligible creators, the platform portion would be $50, before processing, payout and applicable tax charges. Under Ko-fi’s stated 5% membership service fee, the service-fee portion would be $25, before payment processing and other charges. A Ghost plan shown from $15 per month would be a fixed subscription cost at that displayed level, plus processing and any higher-tier or hosting costs. Memberful requires the current plan’s service, transaction and hosting figures; they are not stated here.
Repeat the calculation at 25, 250 and 1,000 members, and at each price you might actually charge. The break-even point between a percentage fee and a monthly plan depends on the plan price and every included or excluded service. Do not use the examples as a forecast or conversion rate; no authoritative independent cross-platform conversion benchmark is established.
Account for taxes and refunds separately
Platform fees, payment fees and taxes are different lines. Keep a reserve for refunds, chargebacks, currency movement and benefits that cost more than expected. If a platform collects or calculates certain taxes, confirm which jurisdictions and transactions that covers and what records you still need to keep. Your accountant or local tax authority remains the source for your filing obligations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Design tiers members will understand
Start with one core tier
Set one price around one clear promise: for example, a monthly members-only issue, a recurring audio feed or access to a moderated community. State the delivery frequency, archive access, cancellation terms and what is not included. Add a second tier only when it offers a genuinely different benefit, not merely more posts.
Add complexity only for a reason
Multiple tiers can serve different budgets, but each creates entitlement checks and support questions. A useful progression might be a basic access tier, a higher tier with live sessions or early access, and an optional supporter tier with recognition. Keep benefits that are expensive or unpredictable—such as one-to-one access, custom requests or physical goods—limited and capacity-controlled.

Write benefits as operational promises
“Behind-the-scenes access” is vague. “One members-only video by the 15th of each month, archived for active members” is testable. Define the deadline, format, archive policy, community rules and what happens when you miss a delivery. Sustainable benefits build trust more reliably than a long list of theoretical perks.
Protect your audience and email list
Do not assume that paying members automatically become your portable audience. Maintain a separate, consent-based email list where lawful, and explain what messages members will receive. Use the platform’s export tools on a schedule, store exports securely and record the date and fields included. Keep a basic migration document containing domain settings, publication URLs, tier names, prices, benefit descriptions, active-member counts and support procedures.
Before launch, identify whether the platform lets you collect consent for your own newsletter, whether transactional and marketing messages are separated, and how unsubscribes propagate. Never add exported addresses to a different marketing list without the required consent. Confirm privacy, retention and deletion controls for members in the regions you serve.

Run a pre-launch platform test
- Build a private draft. Create the actual tier names, prices, benefit descriptions and cancellation language.
- Join as a test member. Use a real payment method if the service permits a controlled test, then record every screen and email a member receives.
- Exercise account changes. Test upgrades, downgrades, failed payments, payment-method updates, pauses and cancellation.
- Deliver every format. Open a members-only post, download a file, play audio or video, assign a community role and test any physical-product workflow you promise.
- Check administration. Locate refunds, exports, tax records, payout reports, moderation tools and support contacts.
- Test portability. Export member data, inspect the file contents and document how a future migration would preserve access and consent.
- Invite a small pilot group. Ask participants where they became confused, then revise the offer before public launch.
Common failure modes and fixes
Choosing by the lowest advertised fee
A low percentage can be outweighed by monthly hosting, processor charges, add-ons, support time or fulfillment. Recalculate net revenue using the same member counts and prices for every candidate.
Promising too many benefits
When delivery slips, members experience the gap as a billing problem. Remove benefits you cannot schedule, automate or cap. Publish a realistic calendar and keep an emergency plan for missed releases.
Ignoring migration until it is urgent
Discovering that exports omit subscription history or that your domain is difficult to move can trap a growing business. Run an export during the trial or pilot and save the procedure with your operating documents.
Assuming a community integration is maintenance-free
Role synchronization, moderation, spam control and member removal require monitoring. Decide who owns those tasks and what happens when a payment fails or a member cancels.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Confusing vendor claims with independent evidence
Platform pages are the authoritative place for their own current fees and features, but they are not neutral performance studies. There is no authoritative independent market-share or conversion benchmark here, so do not choose a service based on an unsupported claim that it converts better.
A practical decision sequence
- Describe the product: publication, community, access library, commerce or a combination.
- List non-negotiables: media formats, community tools, physical fulfillment, custom domain, WordPress or other site integration, and export fields.
- Set your operating limit: hours per month for content, support, moderation and fulfillment.
- Price three scenarios: conservative, expected and high membership counts, including all known fees.
- Run a member journey test: discovery or invitation, checkout, access, renewal, support and cancellation.
- Verify portability: domain control, branding, member-data export, consent records and migration documentation.
- Launch the smallest sustainable tier: measure support load and benefit usage before adding complexity.
Which platform should you choose?
Choose Patreon when your priority is a hosted fan relationship with tiers, community access, recognition and one-time commerce, and you accept the stated percentage fee plus other charges. Choose Ko-fi when you want lightweight recurring support with flexible benefits, including community roles or physical products, and its 5% membership service fee fits your model. Choose Ghost when a publication and newsletter are the central product and a predictable monthly plan with zero platform transaction fees—subject to current plan verification—outweighs a percentage model. Choose Memberful when keeping a branded membership experience on your own domain or WordPress site is more important than minimizing setup and maintenance.
If two options still look close, select the one whose benefits you can deliver for a full year, whose exports you have tested, and whose total cost remains acceptable in your conservative scenario. The platform is infrastructure; the durable advantage is a clear promise you can keep.
