For a first tabletop game, choose a Magic Starter Kit if you want two ready-to-play decks for a beginner and a teaching partner. Choose a Beginner Box if the new player would benefit from a step-by-step tutorial, play aids, and smaller decks they can combine. Before buying either, check whether a nearby participating game store has free 2026 Welcome Decks or a Magic Academy event.
Compare the learning experience first
“Starter Kit” and “Beginner Box” are not interchangeable names for the same product. Wizards of the Coast’s MTG Product Guide categorizes the Starter Kit as best for learning how to play and says it includes what is needed to play and teach. A Beginner Box is a more guided introduction, with a turn-by-turn tutorial and materials for playing together.
| Option | What you get | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Magic Starter Kit | The documented Final Fantasy edition has two 60-card preconstructed decks, two deck boxes, four double-sided tokens, and Arena code cards in select regions. Components can differ by edition. Wizards’ May 30, 2025 announcement | A beginner and a friend who want to start with paired, ready-to-play decks. |
| Foundations Beginner Box | Ten themed 20-card Jumpstart decks, two “How to Play” guides, reference cards, two playmats, two spindown life counters, and a turn-by-turn tutorial. Wizards’ contents guide | A learner who wants structured instruction and variety from combining smaller decks. |
| 2026 Welcome Decks | Five color-specific, 40-card monocolor decks using Standard-legal Foundations cards; participating WPN stores distribute them while supplies last from April 24, 2026. Wizards’ April 7, 2026 announcement | Someone who can get one from a participating store and wants an introductory teaching deck. |
Choose a Starter Kit for paired, ready-to-play games
A Starter Kit makes sense when the beginner has another person to play with and learn from. Its appeal is immediacy: use the included decks for a game rather than first assembling a deck from a larger card pool. The official product guide describes Starter Kits as including everything needed to play and teach, while individual contents depend on the edition.
For a concrete example, the Final Fantasy Starter Kit includes two 60-card preconstructed decks and two deck boxes, as well as tokens. Arena code cards are included only in select regions. Its theme may be especially appealing as a gift for a Final Fantasy fan, but a familiar setting does not establish that its gameplay is mechanically easier than another edition.

Welcome Decks
Before purchasing, ask a nearby participating Wizards Play Network (WPN) store whether it has 2026 Welcome Decks available. Wizards says the five color-specific decks are distributed while supplies last, beginning April 24, 2026, and advises contacting a local store about its distribution plan. These are 40-card monocolor teaching decks—not a pair of complete 60-card decks.
Magic Academy
If learning alongside an instructor would help, look for a Magic Academy event at a local game store. Wizards describes Magic Academy as offering Learn to Play and Deck Building experiences; schedules and participation vary by store, so check directly with the venue.
