Choose a log management service by testing it against your expected log volume, incident searches, retention needs, and total cost—not by comparing ingestion prices alone. Shortlist managed options such as Axiom Cloud, Grafana Cloud, and Datadog, then run the same realistic workload through each before committing. Better Stack can also be investigated, but the available evidence is not sufficient to recommend it over the others.
1. Describe the logging workload you need to support
Write down what the service must handle before opening pricing pages. A startup SaaS may need application errors, access logs, and audit events, but those categories can differ in volume, urgency, and retention requirements.
- Volume: Estimate average and peak log ingestion, then account for expected growth. Peak handling matters if a deployment or incident sharply increases log output.
- Search frequency: Estimate how often engineers will query logs. A team that searches daily has a different query profile from one that mostly retains logs for occasional investigations.
- Log classes: Identify which events must be searchable immediately and which are kept mainly for later review.
- Retention: Set a required period for each log class, and decide whether older data may be archived and slower to retrieve.
These inputs make comparisons meaningful: vendors should be assessed against the same volume, retention, and query pattern, not against unrelated headline examples.
2. Compare the whole cost model
Ask what contributes to the bill beyond ingestion. Depending on the service and plan, relevant dimensions can include data loaded, indexing or searchable retention, storage duration, query usage, and platform fees. A low ingestion rate does not establish a low total cost if other parts of the workload are charged separately.

Axiom describes its own billing in terms of loaded data, query compute, and storage; that is a vendor description of Axiom’s model, not a neutral comparison of all providers. Review Axiom’s comparison, then confirm current plan terms and calculate the estimate using your own workload. Datadog also appears in vendor-authored comparison material with multiple log billing dimensions. Check the comparison context, but use each vendor’s current pricing and plan details for an actual estimate.
For every candidate, request or calculate a like-for-like estimate using your expected average and peak volume, query frequency, searchable retention, archived storage, and any platform charge. The available comparison material is vendor-authored rather than a neutral, independently priced benchmark, and it does not establish a universally cheapest service.
3. Match retention and retrieval to the data
Retention is not just a number of days. Establish how long each log type must remain available, whether it needs to stay searchable throughout that period, and how quickly older data must be retrievable. Confirm both plan limits and retrieval behavior for the exact geography and plan under consideration.
Axiom’s FAQ says its plans allow customized retention, but that statement does not establish a particular duration for every current plan. Verify the current terms with Axiom before relying on a duration. Apply the same check to every shortlisted service: ask whether the retention you need is included, separately billed, or subject to retrieval delays.
4. Check collection, integrations, and portability
Confirm that a candidate supports your runtimes, cloud environment, and existing log-shipping pipeline. Also assess whether it can fit into the telemetry workflow you already use, including any need to correlate logs with metrics and traces.
Grafana Labs promotes OpenTelemetry as an open-standards path. Review Grafana’s description of its approach, but treat portability and ease claims as matters to validate in your setup. OpenTelemetry can help keep instrumentation choices more portable; it does not, by itself, guarantee a painless migration between services.

5. Evaluate a focused shortlist
The options below are candidates for evaluation, not a ranking. Available material does not provide a current, region-specific, like-for-like price and retention comparison, so verify plan details directly before deciding.

6. Run the same representative trial
No service has been tested hands-on for this guide. Before purchase, send a realistic sample to each finalist and have engineers perform the same incident-focused tasks. This checks the practical workflow rather than relying on a feature list.

- Filter by service and environment, then confirm the fields engineers need are available and usable.
- Find errors around a deployment and check whether the query is understandable and useful during an incident.
- If your workflow requires it, correlate the relevant logs with metrics or traces.
- Ask the vendor to estimate the cost of the sample workload scaled to your expected volume, query frequency, and retention profile.
7. Include the operational cost of running the service
A self-managed logging stack can offer control, but the startup must also account for maintaining ingestion, storage, upgrades, and availability. For a team choosing a managed service to reduce operational work, assess whether the proposed product actually removes enough of that burden to justify its full cost. Include the time needed to maintain collection and integrations, not only the subscription estimate.
Make the decision against your requirements
Choose the finalist that meets the required incident workflow and retention behavior at an acceptable total cost, while fitting the team’s integrations and operational capacity. If no estimate uses the same workload assumptions, or if a trial cannot answer the team’s real incident questions, the comparison is not ready to support a purchase decision.
