Choose a local AI model by matching its task strengths, memory needs, and runtime support to the computer you already have. Start with your main workload, check whether the model’s weights and intended context fit your available memory, then compare a short list on representative tasks. Upgrade hardware only if those checks show your current system cannot deliver the quality or speed you need.

1. Define what you need the model to do

Begin with the task you will run most often. A model that is useful for coding may not be your best choice for document questions, image input, or general conversation. Also consider the cost of a mistake: quick drafts and autocomplete may tolerate occasional errors, while code changes, calculations, and answers used for decisions need more careful checking.

  • Coding: Test with representative code, including the languages, frameworks, and repository patterns you use.
  • Math and reasoning: Include problems with verifiable answers, not just prompts that invite plausible explanations.
  • Document Q&A and retrieval: Test whether the model answers from your material, handles the document length you need, and acknowledges missing evidence.
  • Vision: Confirm that both the model and your chosen runtime accept image inputs.
  • General chat, summarization, translation, or classification: Test the actual output format, language, and level of detail your work requires.

Task-to-model guides can help you build an initial shortlist, but their recommendations are starting points, not proof that a model will work well on your machine or your prompts. The Local LLM Team’s April 2026 guide, for example, separates coding, reasoning, retrieval, vision, translation, and general chat rather than treating one model as best at everything: Local LLM Team’s model-selection guide.

2. Check your machine and runtime before picking a size

Write down your GPU and its VRAM, system or unified memory, operating system, inference runtime, and whether you are willing to let some work run on the CPU. Model parameter count alone does not tell you whether a model will fit or how fast it will run.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

The weights are only one part of the memory budget. The prompt and conversation history—the context—also consume memory, and the amount varies with context length, precision, quantization, and runtime settings. Puget Systems’ analysis explains why a model’s weight-file size is a useful first estimate but not a complete VRAM requirement: Puget Systems’ analysis of LLM memory use.

Runtime support matters too. The llama.cpp project documents CPU, GPU, and hybrid CPU-GPU inference across a range of hardware. Its stated goal is “to enable LLM inference with minimal setup and state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of hardware – locally and in the cloud.” Hybrid inference can make a model load when it would not fit entirely in GPU memory, but loading successfully does not guarantee acceptable speed. See the llama.cpp project documentation.

3. Account for context and quantization

Estimate how much material the model must consider at once. A short chat and a long document workflow can have very different context requirements; increasing context can increase memory use even when the model weights stay the same. Check the runtime’s context setting and measure memory with a prompt close to your real workload.

Quantization stores weights at lower precision to reduce memory use. The amount saved—and any effect on output quality or speed—depends on the model, quantization format, and runtime. In Puget Systems’ Meta Llama 3.1 8B example, its stated Transformers setup used just over 15 GB of VRAM for BF16. In that article’s llama.cpp tests, 8-bit and 4-bit variants used about half and about one quarter of the BF16 version’s memory, respectively. Those are measurements from the described setups, not a general sizing formula: context and optimization settings changed VRAM use. Puget Systems’ test details.

Hugging Face documents bitsandbytes methods including LLM.int8() and 4-bit techniques associated with QLoRA as ways to reduce memory requirements. Their availability does not establish that every model’s quantized version retains the quality you need or behaves the same in every inference backend. Check the actual model artifact, runtime, context configuration, and outputs. Hugging Face Transformers documentation on bitsandbytes quantization.

4. Match specialization to the work, then shortlist

A smaller model designed for a particular task can be a better first candidate than a larger general-purpose model. Use current model guides and catalogs to identify options, but verify that the specific weights and features are supported by your runtime and hardware. Ollama’s library can help discover models; a listing is not an individual compatibility or performance guarantee: Ollama model library.

For one current example, Oasium AI’s 2026 guide maps Qwen3.6-35B-A3B to mixed general-purpose and reasoning-heavy work in its desk-side examples. The guide reports 73.4% on SWE-bench Verified and 86.0 on GPQA Diamond, attributing those results to the official model card. Treat these as source-reported benchmark figures, not independently reproduced results or a prediction of performance on your own code, documents, or prompts. The guide says its recommendations were checked against official model cards in early July 2026 and advises rechecking them quarterly: Oasium AI’s 2026 local-model guide.

5. Compare candidates on your own tasks

Once you have two or more plausible candidates, run them on a small set of representative prompts. If you can, keep some examples aside until you make the final choice; a held-out set helps check that a model is useful beyond the prompts used to tune your shortlist. Include the context length you expect to use and record the runtime settings so comparisons are meaningful.

What to compare What to check
Task quality Correctness, usefulness, consistency, and whether the model follows your required output format.
Memory fit Whether the weights and required context fit without memory errors or unacceptable CPU offload.
Speed Response latency and generation speed on your machine at the context length you actually need.
Runtime and hardware support Whether the runtime supports the model format, quantization, and the hardware path you plan to use.
Features Whether it accepts needed inputs, such as images, or supports tools required by your workflow.
License and operating constraints Whether the model’s terms suit your intended use, particularly for commercial work.

Oasium AI’s guide also recommends validating model choices against a held-out test set. Benchmarks can help identify candidates, but they do not replace testing on your own work.

6. Decide whether a hardware upgrade is justified

Consider more VRAM if your preferred weights and context do not fit your existing system, or if the necessary CPU offload makes inference too slow. Do not treat a 24 GB graphics card as a prerequisite for local AI: a smaller model, a different quantization, a shorter context, or a compatible runtime may work within your current memory limits.

Before buying a GPU, verify its memory capacity, compatibility with the runtime and backend you intend to use, and—where relevant—its power requirements, dimensions, price, and availability. Model recommendations, software support, and hardware availability change; check them close to purchase rather than relying on an older guide.
