To choose a laptop that will stay useful for several years, match its operating system and performance to the tasks you actually do, buy enough memory and storage, and check whether important parts can be replaced. Then weigh battery service, warranty and local support, portability, and the cost of the configuration you need. There is no universally longest-lasting choice: the right fit depends on your software, workload, budget, and access to repair.
Start with the work you need the laptop to do
List the applications, peripherals, and tasks you expect to rely on: for example, schoolwork, office work, creative applications, or games. Choose an operating system that supports the software and devices you need, then select performance and capacity for those demands. A laptop that cannot run essential software or handle your normal workload can become impractical well before its hardware fails. Consumer Reports’ laptop buying guide frames the choice around work, school, and play and discusses operating systems and memory.
Portability is part of the fit, too. Compare weight, screen size, available ports, and charger alongside performance. The cheapest or lightest model may not be the best value if it lacks the headroom or connections your routine requires.
Buy enough memory and storage—and check upgrade options
Choose memory and storage for your expected use, and compare the price of the needed configuration before buying. Find out whether memory and storage can be upgraded or replaced later; the answer varies by exact model and generation. Some current ThinkPad examples have upgradeable memory and storage, while the MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5, 2025) is listed with storage that is not removable or serviceable. Those examples are a reason to check the specific model, not to assume every laptop from a brand shares the same design. iFixit’s laptop repairability scorecard provides model-specific details.
#1 Best Overall
- FULL HD IPS DISPLAY - Enjoy vibrant, crystal-clear images with 178-degree wide-viewing angles
- AMD RYZEN 3 30 PROCESSOR - Everyday performance you can count on; Multitask, stream, game casually, and edit photos smoothly with responsive power and vibrant HDR visuals
- ENJOY UP TO 14 HOURS AND 15 MINUTES OF BATTERY LIFE - HP Fast Charge restores battery from 0 to 50% in approximately 45 minutes
- AMD RADEON 610M GRAPHICS - Experience smooth entertainment; Built for streaming and multitasking, enjoy realistic visuals and efficient performance for work and play
- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
If a component cannot be upgraded, choose its capacity with more care: you may have to replace the whole laptop rather than expand it when your needs grow.
Judge repairability by the parts you might need
A repairable laptop can remain useful after a component failure, but repairability is not an all-or-nothing label. Check whether the battery, memory, storage, keyboard, display, and ports can be replaced; whether parts are standard or proprietary; and whether the manufacturer or another reliable source provides instructions and parts for the exact model.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
iFixit scores laptops on a 0-to-10 scale, with 0 described as unrepairable and 10 as easiest to repair. Its rubric changes over time, so use the scorecard to understand a model’s design and compare entries from a similar period rather than treating every score as directly comparable. Its current examples illustrate trade-offs:
- The Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 and T16 Gen 5 (2026) entries list upgradeable memory and storage, easily replaced batteries, and Lenovo instructions and parts.
- The Framework Laptop 12 (2025) entry describes modularity, repairable or upgradeable memory and storage, and repair instructions and parts.
- The MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5, 2025) entry lists a serviceable battery and modular Thunderbolt port design, but storage that is not removable or serviceable and a keyboard riveted down.
These scorecard entries describe repair-related features; they do not establish that a model is the best choice for every buyer or guarantee a particular service life. Confirm the configuration, local availability, and parts and service access where you live.

Plan for battery aging and replacement
Rechargeable batteries lose capacity with use and age. Consider how much unplugged time you need, whether the battery can be replaced, and what service for your exact model is likely to involve. Consumer Reports’ September 29, 2025 buying guide says many laptop models can deliver 8–10 hours of real-world use such as continuous browsing or video streaming. That is a broad guide statement, not a guarantee for an individual laptop: runtime varies with model, workload, settings, and battery condition.
Reduce avoidable battery wear
Microsoft’s Windows battery guidance recommends avoiding frequent deep discharges, keeping charge in a moderate range—roughly 20%–80% when possible—and avoiding high temperatures. For storage, it recommends a cool, dry place and a charge level around 40%–60%. These are care suggestions, not a promise of a specific battery lifespan. See Microsoft’s battery-care guidance.

Check battery health on Windows or Mac
On Windows 11, open a Command Prompt or Terminal window and run powercfg /batteryreport. The built-in report shows battery usage and estimated capacity, which can help you assess a battery’s condition.
On a Mac, open System Information and select Hardware > Power to view cycle count. Apple says cycle limits vary by model and that a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions. This is not a promise of a fixed number of years or hours between charges. Apple’s battery cycle count guidance explains the model-specific limits.

Verify support terms and protect the laptop
Before buying, compare the written warranty and support options for the exact configuration, seller, and region. Check where service is available and whether parts and repair instructions can be obtained. A warranty does not guarantee a particular battery lifespan, and it does not establish that replacement parts will remain available indefinitely.
Physical damage can shorten a laptop’s useful life regardless of its internal design. Use a protective compartment or case when carrying it; iFixit’s general laptop-care guidance recommends protection during transport.
Quick Recap
Use a practical comparison before you buy
| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Workload and compatibility | Required applications, operating system, peripherals, and performance needs | Incompatible software or insufficient performance can make a laptop impractical for its owner sooner. |
| Memory and storage | Capacity at purchase, upgradeability, replaceability, and the cost of the configuration you need | Some models allow upgrades; others have soldered or non-serviceable components. |
| Battery | Unplugged-use needs, replacement path, health reporting, and service cost | Battery aging may be addressed by replacing the battery rather than the whole laptop. |
| Repairability | Replaceability of battery, memory, storage, keyboard, display, and ports; parts and instructions | A practical repair can keep a usable laptop in service after a component fails. |
| Support and protection | Warranty, local service options, parts access, and carrying protection | Service access and damage risk affect the practical cost of ownership. |
| Portability and budget | Weight, screen size, ports, charger, and price of a configuration with enough headroom | The lightest or cheapest option may not suit your workload or longevity priorities. |
