Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose a home UPS or inverter by starting with the devices you need to keep running and how long they must stay on. Add up their real operating wattage, allow headroom within the unit’s watt and VA limits, then check the runtime chart for that load. A UPS is usually the better fit for electronics that need a fast transfer or power conditioning; an inverter and battery can suit selected household loads during longer or recurring outages.
1. List the devices that must stay on
Keep the backup load focused. You might include a computer and monitor, modem and router, network storage, or selected lights—not every device in the room. For each item, find its operating wattage on the label or in its documentation. If the label gives only a maximum rating, or the actual demand is uncertain, measure it with a power meter.
Include peripherals that will draw power from the backup unit. Eaton advises adding the maximum wattage ratings of the equipment you plan to connect so the UPS can support the load without overloading; its guide specifically calls out computers, monitors, network equipment, and peripherals: Eaton’s desktop UPS buying guide.
2. Size output capacity separately from runtime
Check watts and VA
Watts measure the real power available to run your devices. VA (volt-amperes) is the apparent-power rating. A UPS can have a VA rating higher than its watt limit, so compare both numbers and make sure the total load is within the unit’s stated watt capacity. Do not choose a UPS by its VA figure alone.

- TEN PROTECTED OUTLETS: Power your entire setup with 5 battery backup outlets for essential devices, and 5 surge-only outlets for peripherals. Plus built-in coaxial and Ethernet surge protection for added peace of mind
- AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATION (AVR): Corrects low voltage brownouts (88V+) and surges (+/-13%) without draining battery. Boosts or trims to stable 120V. Extends runtime for blackouts; Active PFC compatible for gaming PCs
- REPLACEABLE BATTERY & ENERGY STAR UPS: User-replaceable battery (APCRBC124, sold separately) for zero-downtime swaps. ENERGY STAR certified for 92%+ efficiency, cutting energy costs vs standard UPS units
- LCD DISPLAY PANEL: Features an intuitive LCD screen that displays real-time status information including battery charge level, estimated runtime, load capacity, and input voltage for easy monitoring of your power protection system
Allow margin between the expected load and the UPS output limit. Schneider Electric recommends output watt capacity about 20–25% above the load; Eaton recommends a 20% capacity margin and separately advises against loading a UPS above 80% of its capacity. These are manufacturer rules of thumb, not universal engineering laws. Follow the specifications and manual for the model you select: Schneider Electric’s UPS buying guide and Eaton’s buying guide.
Check how long it will run
Output capacity answers whether the unit can support the load; battery energy determines how long it can do so. Schneider Electric gives 5–15 minutes as a typical runtime range for basic UPS units intended for safe shutdown, but that is an illustrative manufacturer figure, not a prediction for your equipment or a universal runtime. Runtime depends on the connected load and battery capacity. Use the selected model’s runtime chart at your estimated wattage, and reduce the backed-up load if you need more time.

If you need longer backup, check whether the specific model accepts replacement batteries or external battery modules. Do not estimate runtime from amp-hours alone: the unit’s design, usable battery energy, load, and manufacturer runtime data all matter.
3. Decide between a UPS and an inverter
| Option | Best suited to | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| UPS | Computers, networking equipment, and other electronics that need to ride through a transfer or benefit from power conditioning. | Output watts and VA, transfer behavior, runtime at your load, outlet type, battery support, and voltage compatibility. |
| Inverter with battery | Selected lights and household loads during longer or recurring outages, when a short transfer delay is acceptable. | Transfer time, output waveform and quality, startup or surge capacity, battery compatibility and charging, load shedding, and installation requirements. |
Products sold as home inverters do not necessarily include the same transfer behavior, surge protection, charger, or approved battery configuration. Compare the actual product documentation rather than relying on the category name. Schneider Electric frames the choice around transfer speed, power quality, duration, and how sensitive the connected devices are: UPS buying guide.

Choose a UPS topology for the job
- Standby: Basic backup for home or office equipment.
- Line-interactive: Adds automatic voltage regulation (AVR), which can correct some low or high input voltage without switching to battery, within the model’s supported range. Schneider Electric says this type is usually sufficient for home and office use.
- Online double-conversion: Continuously converts power and provides zero transfer time. It is intended for especially sensitive or critical applications and is generally more complex than ordinary home needs.
These descriptions follow Eaton’s overview of UPS types and intended uses: Eaton’s UPS topology guide.
4. Check outlets, batteries, and compatibility
- Separate backed-up outlets from surge-only outlets. Only battery-backed outlets provide outage power. Eaton advises against putting a laser printer on a battery-backed outlet because its load behavior can trigger transfers and drain the battery; a surge-only outlet is the stated exception.
- Check outlet count and spacing. Make sure the unit has enough battery-backed outlets for your essential devices and that plugs fit without blocking adjacent sockets.
- Review battery support. Confirm whether batteries are user-replaceable, whether external battery modules are supported, and what the replacement process involves. Do not assume a battery from another model or an arbitrary battery bank is compatible.
- Consider alarms and software. Audible alerts can warn of a power event or low battery. Monitoring or shutdown software can help a computer save work and shut down safely, if supported by the unit.
- Match local power requirements. Check AC voltage and plug format against your home and the product. A permanently installed inverter or battery system must follow its manual and local electrical requirements; installation details vary by region.
A UPS protects only the correctly sized devices connected to it. It does not power an entire home unless it is specifically designed and installed for that purpose.

5. Compare candidate models using the same checklist
Once you know your load, outage duration, and preferred type of backup, compare product documentation on these points:
- Maximum output in watts and VA.
- Runtime at your estimated load.
- Topology and transfer behavior.
- Voltage regulation and surge protection.
- Number of outlets with battery backup versus surge-only protection.
- Battery type, replacement process, and expansion support.
- Local voltage and plug compatibility.
- Installation needs and total ownership requirements.
Use the model’s published limits and runtime data, not brand reputation alone. Without a device list and a target runtime, there is no universal UPS size that can be recommended reliably.
