Choose a home battery by matching two separate things to your needs: power output for the appliances you want to run at once, and usable energy for how long you want them to run. Then check which circuits the system can actually back up, how it recharges in an outage, and whether the terms of any local grid-service program fit your priorities. There is no universal right size or guaranteed payback; the answer depends on your loads, outage plans, utility rules, and installed quote.

Start by defining what the battery must keep running

Before comparing capacity numbers or equipment, make a list of the circuits and appliances you want powered during an outage. This defines the job the battery needs to do; a large capacity figure alone does not tell you whether a system can support your chosen loads.

Build a critical-load list

Consider whether you need refrigeration, lighting, communications, selected outlets, heating or cooling controls, pumps, or medical equipment. These are prompts for your household to assess, not a guarantee that a particular battery can run them. Note which loads are essential, which can be switched off, and which might operate at the same time.

Estimate demand and duration

For each chosen load, estimate its energy use over the outage period you want to cover. Pay particular attention to appliances with motors, which may draw more power when starting than while running. A pump or refrigerator starting while other loads are on can create a different power requirement from the same appliances running separately.

CARB’s residential backup-power sizing tool states that a battery must be sized for both demand power and total stored energy. The practical implication is to settle on a specific load list and desired runtime before comparing systems.

Match battery power and energy separately

Battery specifications answer different questions. Power, measured in kilowatts (kW), describes how much load the system can support at a moment. Energy, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), describes how much electricity is stored and therefore contributes to how long the system can run loads. Check usable energy rather than relying on a headline nominal-capacity figure.

  • Continuous output: Compare the system’s continuous power rating with the combined demand of loads that may run simultaneously.
  • Surge output: Compare its short-duration surge capability with startup demand from motors and other equipment that can draw more power briefly.
  • Usable energy: Compare the energy available to backed-up loads with their estimated consumption over your target runtime.

A battery can have ample stored energy but insufficient output for a large motor or simultaneous loads. Conversely, a system can support the instantaneous load but run short of stored energy before a long outage ends. Neither a single kWh figure nor a single kW rating establishes both capabilities.

Check what the backup installation actually covers

“Whole-home backup” and “backup power” can describe different configurations. Ask what is included in the specific equipment and installation quote, and verify the arrangement against the manufacturer’s documentation, installer’s scope, utility requirements, and local authority rules.

  • Backed-up circuits: Confirm whether the proposal serves selected circuits or the whole panel, and which loads are excluded or limited.
  • Transfer and control equipment: Identify the equipment that isolates the home from the grid and transfers power during an outage, and confirm what is included in the installation.
  • Solar recharge: Ask whether your compatible solar system can recharge the battery during an outage. Do not assume that an existing solar installation will continue operating when the grid is down.
  • Compatibility and approvals: Verify compatibility with existing solar, inverter, and electrical service, plus any export, interconnection, or local permitting requirements that apply at your address.

There is no single backup architecture or universal set of local approval requirements established for every home. Get the proposed configuration and responsibilities in writing rather than treating a battery-only product description as a complete backup solution.

Decide whether grid-service participation suits you

Home batteries can be used to shift electricity across time and, through some programs, support grid needs. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) describes storage charging during lower-cost daytime hours and discharging during higher-demand evenings, as well as system-level benefits such as reliability, renewable integration, infrastructure relief, and backup in at-risk locations. Those grid-wide benefits do not establish a particular household’s savings or payment.

For example, CPUC’s July 9, 2026 overview reported that more than 16,000 MW of energy-storage capacity had come online in California since 2020 and that state planning called for more than 14,000 MW of additional battery storage by 2032. These are California system figures, not household sizing targets. The overview also said earlier storage projects were on track to deliver about $22 million per year in net benefits by the end of 2021 and that annual benefits could reach $835 million to $1.34 billion by 2032; those figures are likewise system-level estimates, not savings forecasts for an individual customer.

Read the program terms, not just the advertised value

A virtual power plant (VPP) or demand-response program may coordinate enrolled batteries during selected grid events. Before joining, find out:

  • Who can control dispatch and when events may be called.
  • How much energy must remain reserved for your outage backup, and whether you can change that reserve.
  • Whether the system can export electricity, and what happens if it is already discharging to reduce your time-of-use bill.
  • How payments are calculated, whether they depend on actual performance, and how often you will be paid.
  • Whether the commitment conflicts with another incentive, tariff, or program, and how you can opt out or leave.

Program commitments can reduce the energy available for a later event or an outage. In March 2026, California’s Public Advocates Office commentary noted that a battery already used for time-of-use savings or SGIP cycling may have less energy available for a VPP event. It also cautioned that claimed program capacity should reflect what batteries can actually deliver.

That commentary compared California demand-response resources on August 14–15, 2020: third-party demand response recorded performance figures of 41% and 25%, while the BIP program plus other reliability demand-response resources recorded 81% and 85%. These are figures for those resource categories on those dates, as reported in the March 2026 commentary—not a forecast of how a home battery or VPP will perform in a future event.

Compare the complete proposal on one household scenario

Ask each installer or provider to evaluate the same critical-load list, desired outage runtime, and assumptions about solar, tariff, and grid-service participation. Compare the following items side by side rather than choosing on capacity or an advertised payment alone.

What to compare What to verify
Energy capacity Usable stored energy and estimated runtime for your selected loads.
Power output Continuous and surge output against simultaneous and startup loads.
Backup scope Selected circuits or whole-home configuration, limits, and equipment included.
Recharge and resilience Whether compatible solar can recharge during an outage and how backup reserves are configured.
Compatibility Fit with existing solar, inverter, and electrical service, plus export and interconnection constraints.
Economics Installed cost, tariff assumptions, warranty and degradation terms, and incentives verified for your address.
Grid-service control Dispatch authority, event schedule, minimum reserve, opt-out or exit terms, and payment formula.
Reliability evidence Whether availability and program claims are measured, and whether the battery is committed elsewhere.

Use the actual installed quote and your utility tariff to model bill effects. Keep three kinds of value distinct: backup resilience for the outage scenarios you care about, potential bill savings under your tariff, and conditional payments for program participation. Test a conservative case in which enrollment, dispatch, or incentives are unavailable. No national residential battery-price comparison, current nationwide tax-credit conclusion, or universal payback figure is established here, so do not treat any of those as a given.

Verify incentives and programs for your address

Availability, eligibility, funding, and enrollment terms depend on location and can change. The policy examples below are California-specific and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

California SGIP

California’s Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is one possible incentive path. The available program information says residential solar-and-storage equity reservations began June 2, 2025; that date does not establish that funding or reservations remain available now. Check the live program status, qualification rules, administrator, and remaining funding before including SGIP in a purchase calculation.

California DEBA

The CPUC’s Distributed Energy Backup Assets (DEBA) program is not a direct individual-home rebate promise. Its program page says the 2025–26 budget appropriated $46.1 million for new clean microgrids and non-residential or aggregated residential distributed clean-energy and storage projects. The page reported a draft solicitation released for comment in June 2026 and a final solicitation anticipated later in 2026; check the current program page and eligibility before relying on that timetable or assuming an individual household qualifies.

For any local utility or aggregator offer, confirm that it is open in your service territory and get its dispatch, reserve, payment, and exit terms in writing. California program examples do not establish what is available to a homeowner in another state or country.
