Choose a handheld PC by checking your specific games and how you’ll run them first—not by assuming a device will play every older title. Confirm each game’s store, launcher, operating-system requirements, controls, and any account or online dependencies. Then weigh input options, screen comfort, workload-specific battery estimates, storage, and setup.
Start with the games and their launchers
Make a short list of the classic games you actually want to play, then check how each one is obtained and what it needs to run. Verify the game’s storefront or launcher, operating-system requirements, and any account sign-in or online dependency before choosing hardware.
For example, ASUS says its 2023 ROG Ally supports Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic, and GOG. That is a statement about access to storefronts; it does not establish that every game in those libraries works correctly on the Ally. ASUS ROG Ally (2023)
Compatibility is title-specific. The manufacturer information cited here does not provide a game-by-game compatibility matrix, so check the exact titles you care about rather than treating a supported store or operating system as a guarantee.

Match the controls to the kind of game
Classic games can be designed around very different inputs. A platformer may suit gamepad controls; strategy, point-and-click, and other mouse-oriented games may be more comfortable with a trackpad or mouse. Check whether you can remap buttons if a game expects an unusual keyboard or controller layout.
- Steam Deck: Valve documents gamepad controls, trackpads, gyro, and assignable rear buttons. These options can help adapt inputs for games that were not designed around a conventional handheld gamepad. Valve Steam Deck hardware
- Original Lenovo Legion Go: Lenovo documents detachable controllers, an integrated trackpad, and mappable controls. The detachable design may be useful if you want to change how you hold or position the controls. Lenovo Legion Go launch announcement
These are documented features, not a guarantee that a particular game’s controls will feel comfortable. Check the game’s input options and consider whether you would be willing to use an attached mouse for mouse-first titles.

Choose a display you can comfortably use
Screen size, resolution, and refresh options affect readability and power use as well as the physical size of the device. The original Legion Go announcement lists an 8.8-inch display, adjustable resolution from 1600p to 800p, and 144Hz and 60Hz refresh options. These are specifications for that model, not a general description of every Legion Go generation or handheld PC. Lenovo Legion Go launch announcement
A larger, higher-resolution screen can make small text easier to inspect, but it can also mean a bigger device and greater power demand. Refresh rate is another trade-off to consider rather than a deciding measure on its own. The available manufacturer specifications do not establish a head-to-head display or battery comparison, so prioritize comfortable text and interface visibility for your games.

Interpret battery claims by workload
Battery estimates describe particular devices and workloads; they are not controlled comparisons between models or promises for every classic game. Valve lists a 40Wh battery for Steam Deck and says lighter uses such as streaming, smaller 2D games, or browsing may reach approximately 7–8 hours. ASUS lists up to 1.5 hours for heavy gaming on its 2023 ROG Ally page. The figures use different workload descriptions, so they should not be read as an apples-to-apples runtime test.
Use these figures as context, not as a prediction of how long your chosen game will run. Actual runtime depends on the game and how the device is being used; the cited product information does not establish a runtime for any specific classic title. Valve Steam Deck hardware · ASUS ROG Ally (2023)

Plan storage for the size of your library
Check the internal storage configuration of the exact model you are considering, then decide whether its capacity suits your installed library. If you expect to keep many games available at once, confirm the model’s expansion options before buying.
- Valve says all Steam Deck models support microSD cards and that games stored on a card appear in the library. Valve Steam Deck hardware
- The cited ASUS ROG Ally (2023) and original Lenovo Legion Go materials also document microSD expansion. Check the specifications for the precise model and configuration rather than assuming every generation has identical support. ASUS ROG Ally (2023) · Lenovo Legion Go launch announcement
The cited information establishes card support, but not a particular card speed class recommendation. Follow model-specific guidance when choosing a card.

Account for operating-system setup
The operating system affects which store libraries and launchers you can access and how much setup may be involved. Valve describes Steam Deck as running SteamOS, with a quick suspend-and-resume feature; ASUS describes the 2023 ROG Ally as a Windows 11 handheld with access to several storefronts. The available product information does not quantify setup time or establish that every game will work on either system.
Before purchase, check whether your games require a particular launcher, account, or online connection, and consider how comfortable you are managing those requirements on a handheld. Store access alone does not confirm individual game compatibility. Valve Steam Deck hardware · ASUS ROG Ally (2023)
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before you buy
- Write down your target games. Identify the exact titles rather than relying on a broad label such as “classic games.”
- Verify how each title runs. Check its storefront, launcher, operating-system needs, account requirements, and online dependencies for the candidate device.
- Check the input demands. Decide whether gamepad controls are suitable or whether you need a trackpad, remapping, gyro, detachable controllers, or a mouse.
- Assess screen usability. Look for text and menus you can comfortably read, and weigh display size and resolution against device size and power use.
- Read battery claims in context. Note the model and stated workload; do not treat estimates for different workloads as a direct comparison.
- Confirm storage and expansion. Check the exact configuration and whether microSD support meets your library needs.
- Consider the setup you’ll accept. Match the operating system and launcher access to your tolerance for installing, signing in, and configuring games.
